Gretsch Catalina Maple Appreciation Thread
« on: June 06, 2007, 12:51:38 PM »

Here's mine

*I sanded the inner plies kasi mejo rough sha. Chaka nabasa ko na if the inner ply is smooth mas brighter yung sound nya.

*I change heads evry now and then. Minsan trip ko Coated minsan naman Pinstripe. Sana may Clear AMBS na dito.

*I also changed the tom mounts.

*Chaka pag bibile na kayo check nyo yung 16 and 14 floor toms.

Note: The first pic has 16" bass drum

How about sa resonant head? Stock lang ba? And no muffling or overtone control whatsoever?

the one we use at the studio only uses stock resonant heads. i still haven't fully understood how that affects the recorded sound, so we don't really bother changing it. as far as i know, the resonant head contributes more to the projection of the drum, which isn't really so relevant in a recording studio setting, unless you make heavy use of the room acoustics. in my case, i want my tracks as dry as possible, and then i put room mics.

muffling-wise, we only use duct tape, to shorten the toms a bit. well, it's not really the length of the tone that bothers me, but the sympathetic resonance. i just needed to be able to control it better. i could always add length with a little reverb. (also, you don't want your toms sounding too long when you've got a drummer like rickson -- the one in the video -- it smears all the detail in his drumming. hehe)

@marvinq: Diba mas makapal coated ambassadors kesa stock head dun sa resonant? So pano tuning nyo dun? Since thinner heads have higher pitch than thicker ones, is it batter-lower resonant-higher or batter=resonant pitchwise?

@Sandy: Napansin ko naka-Gibraltar Double Peds ka. Yung HiHat Stand mo, is it a Gibraltar DL-DP? Kasi kung 3-legged hihat stand, it gets in the way of the double peds. I've been wanting to buy a DL-DP. Ok ba performance?

Pare diko alam yung DL-PL. Pero yung sakin is the 5607 series hat stand. The pedal board can be moved using your drumkey. Twist your hat stand to the left to make way for the left slave pedal yun na yun man!!! Gibraltar the best hardware!!! Hehehe

yeah! Catalina rocks.

Favorite ko yung 10" tom with stock heads.  Tapos sa 12" and 14" naka G2 on batter, stock on reso.

I agree! Gibraltar is the best! hehehe

Here's a quick reference on the meaning of the codes of Gibraltar Hardware... Applies only to the 9600 series Hi-Hat stands...

ML-DP (Movable Leg, Direct lever Pull drive)
ML-LD (Movable Leg, Liquid Drive)
NL-DP (No Leg, Direct lever Pull Drive)
DL-LD (Dual Leg, Liquid Drive)

I have a 9607 DL-LD Dual Leg - Liquid Drive... Smoothest and fastest hi-hat stand I've ever used!

It has two main legs, and a mini leg for added stability... You can rotate them both to make way for double pedals.

Though I don't use double peds...

Teka... OT na... hehehe

well, according to my research, you're likely to have a sound you want in a studio setting when the resonant head is tuned a fifth (7 semitones) higher than the batter head. however, we aren't so strict about this, as we still play by ear in the studio. most of the time, we find a sound we're happy with without knowing how we got there in the first place.

also, it's a good thing i only have to worry about recording the drums, not actually tuning them. it's a good thing rickson is very reliable when it comes to tuning the drums. :-)

Our church in Aurora Blvd JOGSGO uses a Catalina Maple. katulad nung kay Sandy ang kulay. ganda! lalo na siguro kung papalitan ng heads at magaling magtono yung drummer. i also love the 10" tom. one thing though.. i prefer hanging /suspended 14" toms.. mas maganda tumunog eh.. yung katulad ng sa Sonor ba yun? pero thank God for this wonderful kit na binigay Niya sa church namin. :-)

I use both Coated Ambs and Pinstripes for my Gretsch CMs. Dipende sa mood ko pero i think the best head for these drums to sing is any Single Ply Head. Coated Ambs or Ambs Clear.

Individual toms can be ordered sa JB Music. Kaso hassle ata.

Should I keep it low, high or stay in mid?

Salamat uli! :-)
