Title: Reading: A Good Way to Learn while Killing Time
Post by: c1ark3nt on February 12, 2011, 08:36:31 PM
Pagbabasa siguro ng kahit ano... Libro (Fiction, non-fiction esp Cinical Psychology and Court Proceedings), Dyaryo (even Obituaries), Magazine (kahit pambabae or "Teens"), Blogs, Wikipedia... even porn. Madami natututunan then ina-apply sa totoong buhay... May magandang resulta, me wala. pero sa experience na yun, in the end, may natutunan...

a little OT: Isusunod ko na siguro yung Matchbox/Hotwheels/Slot Car collection... Nakaka relax. heheh.

(transferred the Die Cast Car images to a more fitting thread: http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,222545.0.html (http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,222545.0.html))

Uy! Bagong forum category! :-)

Reading is definitely one of my hobbies. It's educational, whether it be information from books or the internet (wikipedia, etc etc etc). It also broadens your vocabulary.

Nice toycar collection you got there! I remember when I was still 9 years old. I used to buy Hot Wheels/Matchbox and take them from their packaging haha. I guess I still have 'em cars somewhere here.

i love to read. kahit ano. naalala ko dati, i'd rather buy encyclopedia set that toys. of all things, yung pugad baboy series sa inquirer ang naging dahilan para mahilig ako sa pagbabasa. may subscription kase kame sa inquirer dati and una pugad baboy lang binabasa ko then eventually yung sports pages hanggang buong dyaryo na. then hanggang books na. the internet is such a blessing kase halos lahat ng mga books/articles na wala dito sa atin mababasa na, it came with a cost though, lumabo mata ko. medyo addictus kase ako magbasa, hindi ako titigil hanggang di ko natatapos. lalo na yung mga spy thrillers, kaya yun. pinaka extreme na ginawa ko e tapusin yung harry potter: order of phoenix in 3 days. walang work kase kaya reading marathon.

hindi ba dapat books yung pics?... :-D

anyway, my reading is determined by time and the availability of reading materials. pag may movies ako hindi ako makapagbasa at lalo na pag nakaharap sa internet. pero nagttry na ulit ako magbasa dahil sa iba pang plano ko sa buhay... :-D

salamat sa lahat... i think i will have to transfer the images to the die cast collectors thread na ginawa ni James_Animagi.  :-)

:-D yung books ko kasi, ni-rape ni Ondoy. nasa ilalim ng toy car shelves tapos wala ako sa bahay nung bumagyo, i was too late to save them...

@Jeff,

I envy you esp. on the Pugad Baboy. But those helped a lot.

could anyone suggest a good reading material in "motivating others"? I have that problem for both my officemates and an organization I belong to. Nakaka-dismaya tuloy.

wikipedia is kool, but remember that it's not a good material to cite when writing your own stuff, or even quoting things there during discussion. Diba pwedeng i-edit ng kung sino yun. Better yet click the sources or related articles below i.e. endnotes, etc. though kung madaliang basa at info, sa wikipedia din ako... :-D

question, e-books or hardcopies?

thanks for the suggestion, Jeff. Hanapin ko to mamaya pag-uwi. sakto, sweldo, may pambili. hahah.

question, e-books or hardcopies?

Art of War na translated in Cavell, naka-3 na kong bili. laging nawawala

Uy. Okay to ah. Hehe.

I'd like to consider myself as a voracious reader back when I didn't have a laptop and desktop. Mostly, yung mga binabasa ko eh mga military books; works by authors like Tom Clancy, Andy McNabb, Richard Marcinko, H. Jay Riker, David Michaels. I was also into sci-fi/fantasy books such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40k, Forgotten Realms. Comics and graphic novels din, nangolekta ako before. Plus tons and tons of general fiction books I found in the house (as my mom was quite the bookworm herself).

Yun nga lang mula nung nagka-laptop, and then on, desktop, medyo na-lessen na pagbili ko ng books. Although, sometimes I'd download books in PDF format. But then again, I still enjoy reading through wiki sites such as Wikipedia, Gundam Wiki, Star Wars Wiki, Dragon Age Wiki, etc.

Q: How come you know a lot?
A: Because I'm a WILD reader.  :-D :-P

Recommended "old" readings:

1. The Art of War by Sun Tzu - my guide to survival in different aspects of life...
2. The Street Lawyer by John Grisham - even it's just a novel, it kind of wakes me up to reality...

Best recommended reading:

The Bible - Spiritually, it's uplifting... Practically, we get a) Action, b) Love Stories, c) A lot of Hero stories, d) Vocation, e) Quotes, and a lot of stories and sayings that guide us through life...

Ako naman I started reading just last year with The Hobbit.

I love Isaac Asimov's works. So far, natapos ko na Prelude to Foundation, Forward The Foundation, Foundation and nasa kalagitnaan na ako ng Foundation and Empire.

After I finish the Foundation series, LOTR naman...hehe :-D

Better late than never!

I used to read newspapers a lot when I was still in high school. Favorite ko yung World News kasi hinihintay ko magkagera. I don't know why. Hehe... Then when I was a bit older (i think that was yesterday.. joke!) fiction books na ung binabasa ko. Books of dan brown blew my imagination.

When I encountered God I started to read the Bible which will always be the best book. I still read the Bible everyday and God's Words never fails to inspire me.

Leadership books are good too. Those written by John Maxwell is really a blessing. I also would recommend a book for those who thinks a lot... the idea book... search nyo na lang sa national bookstore. hehe!

I still prefer actual books than read stuff on screen  There's something about the turning of a page with your hand and the smell of ink and paper that I find enjoyable, where you can "touch" the characters.  Giles, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, said the same thing when he was asked why he doesn't like using computers.

Reading has always been a good recreational activity for me. It helped me gain knowledge far beyond the ordinary individuals who don't read. It's like getting an idea from the author of the book. An extension of their wits. Keep on reading.

Nakakaadik nga magbasa. Napaparami pagbabasa ko ngayon.

Huli ko nabasa The Catcher in the Rye. I'd rate it 7/10. Pero funny talaga siya haha. More of comedy siya para sakin kesa depressing na story na madalas sabihin ng mga taong pa-coollll.

Mga librong nabasa ko these past few weeks:

Dark Tower series: The Gunslinger (Book 1) by Stephen King.

Naked by Dave Sedaris

Snakes and Earrings (Japanese Author)
At piercings. Sadista kasi yung pagssex. At napakagaling nung pagkakadescribe ng pagssex nila. Parang gusto ko tawagan yung fubu ko bigla nun LOL. Medyo sick tong novel na to.

Right now ang binabasa ko ay yung 1984 ni George Orwell. Bigay ko opinion ko pag natapos na.

Nabasa ko na. This is such a powerful book that I think it is more than just a novel. Never thought of how the world could end up like how it was portrayed in the book.

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. Was frustrated when i watched the movie

The problem with Dan Brown is, you read one book, you've read them all.  All throughout his four previous books (i've read all of them), he used the same plot points, and simply changed the characters and the scenes.  There would always be the main character in a dream, an event that puts the world in danger, a person who got killed, a bad guy you least suspect, and a "bad ass" cop-like character.

The advantage of ebooks is the physical space that you can save. But yeah, I still prefer the so-called dead trees. Sunday morning at the porch, reading a good hard cover or a paper back, endless coffee and occasional chat with the wife. :) (I'm getting old, damn it!)

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Kakatapos lang. Hay! Not recommended for beginning readers. (So beginner pala ako )

Try Neil Gaiman's books, like, Stardust, American Gods and my favorite, Neverwhere.

I'll put in the cliche +1 (because I'm a Gaiman fan), he he he. His latest is The Graveyard Book. Premise is that a boy was raised by ghosts (much like Tarzan raised by apes).

Take note, though.  Most people think this book is about religion, when it's actually about spirituality.

question, e-books or hardcopies?

Hard copy kasi iba pa din ang feel ng may binubuklat ka, yung tunog ng papel as you turn the pages, and yung paglalagay ng bookmark. But I have to resort to e-books sa iPhone ko because the nature of my work requires me so.

Ui ayos ito... Reading is actually another hobby of mine.

Reading takes me to other worlds, opens me up to the thoughts of people who were before me... thoughts that will stay even after they are (and I am) gone

Books are mankind's history!

Hitler's Third Reich.. The Red Wall ... Lord of the Rings.. Harry Potter.. Game of Thrones.. Hundred Years Of Solitude... Love In The Time Of Cholera... Communist Manifesto ... kahit ano basta mukhang interesting go ako diyan!

oh hey fellow bookworms.

i too like reading, although on and off rin minsan. pag me bagong libro basa ulit. pag wala , wala rin babasahin. minsan naiipon lang din ung libro sa bahay, di ko rin nababasa hahaha,

anyways, i last read

Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami

then last last one, hmmh.

Illustrado by Miguel Syjuco

right now, i'm kind of looking for a book list ng 10 greatest novels of the world.

anyone know like a top 100 novels you must read before you die list?? or any list whatsoever na mejo balanced ang cultures

haven't seen it yet. hirap kasi sa book to movie adaptations, nakakalimutan madalas ang mismong essence ng story in lieu of "profitable" concepts.

"Let me just tell you this, Watanabe. I’m a real, live girl, with real, live blood gushing through my veins. You’re holding me in your arms and I’m telling you that I love you. I’m ready to do anything you tell me to do. I may be a little crazy but I’m a good kid, and honest and I work hard, I’m kinda cute, I’ve got nice boobs, I’m a good cook, and my father left me a trust fund. I mean, I’m a real bargain, don’t you think?"

hehehe. i remember this.
and you know whats weird, only Midori, compared to the other female characters, they never do it in the whole story.

mejo nakakainis lng din ung themes sa book ni Murakami na meron "promise me you'll never forget about me"
parang ultimate friendzone line, tapos mamatay bigla ung babae. aysus!
