Same here, though I was more into sketch. I slowly lost my interest in visual arts because of computer games. Good thing I have relived the artistic side of me via musical creativity.

Nabalik uli yung hilig ko sa illustration last year nung naisip ko magbuo ng shirt brand (though nagaaral uli through books and forums). Though lineworks ko ok, yung pag color and painting ko, pati sense of lighting medyo panis.

:-D Sana may nakaintindi sakin.

Yeah! Art Capital of the Philippines!

Not mine, but something amazing to strive for (used to do this during highschool, but stopped during college. Maybe I should pick the skill up again soon). Sure, I can do this with a pencil,
nice works sir! \m/ love the highs and lows sa shading mo. id like to share some of my works:

Wow, Ang galing mo sir.

ngayon nag papractice ako ng bagong hobby.. for now its a secret, i will reveal soon as my project is finished. :-P

something i did yesterday , might submit it for an upcoming show at MOA sa june.
I Siopao, 29 years on this earth have started painting again. After almost three years of working with digital art as a freelance designer cum photographer, I have picked up a brush and rediscovered my old passion. Started Monday and I haven’t stopped since. Painted for three days straight with only coffee and nicotine to sustain me. Locked myself in my little studio apartment with art materials, cigarette butts, take-out remains and coffee stains removing any notion that somebody actually lived there. I’ve been living here on my own for over a year. Wasn’t always like this, by myself, there’s just enough room for two people to squeeze in semi-comfortably.
The flat isn’t really that big to begin with, just a bit over twenty one square feet, yet it suddenly seems too bare these last few months with just the necessities like a bed, a television and a kitchen/dining area taking up the empty space. Math really, two minus one equals more space. But with the addition of sketchbooks, old paintings (some of which were unfinished pieces) and other miscellaneous art materials scattered about, the place actually looks more “alive”. Indeed along with the take-out cartons, empty beer bottles and a fine carpet of cigarette ashes, these few square feet’s now a far cry from the antiseptic ambience of bare essential living.
It’s been a long time coming, telling myself to try and get back to my old creative habits. Forced back to it really, been trying to get my art materials together for some months now, buying new brushes and paint or going back to my parents’ house to pick up old materials still useful but haven’t found the time to actually start on a project. Three days ago I found myself in bed staring at the ceiling for hours after finding out that I was no longer wanted. No cries of anguish or flashes of crimson, only the ceiling existed at that moment of truth. The ceiling a haven from the maelstrom of which I fear. Nothing to look at really, just old faded glow in the dark stars I super-glued up there that have long ago lost their power to illuminate. Yet the multitude of discolorations, the stains of old age and old dust seem a world of their own, ready to be discovered. And I, the entranced explorer of the plastic stars, yet afraid to move forth and discover. Why does someone the need to discover stars when he was already part of the universe’ center? Was.
That lasted about forty-five minutes, I then decided to get my hands dirty and start painting. As there was a shortage of clean canvass at the moment, I sanded my little round coffee table removing the cracking old paint and the numerous battle scars accumulated over years of servitude which defined it to it’s lot.
The sanding left it naked before me, submissively ready to receive whatever change I would instill in it. I proceeded to work on it, opting to use ink on this particular piece. Didn’t want to use oil just yet. The choice of medium defines the state of mind I am in and the direction the piece will go. With ink, the work I is a lot more controlled, needing a little bit more precision and concentration than oil. I don’t think oil will cut it this time I’d probably just make a mess with a mediocre piece. Oil was my medium of choice when I was painting almost everyday, before I joined the ranks of the eight hour crowd. I liked the feel of malleability of oils, somewhat like sculpting on canvass. You can constantly reform your idea, swirl it around and change direction as I am wont to do, me being an over-thinking creature. A sense of numbed calm ensues when working with a medium like ink that calls for more control from the artist. That was what I needed, to be numb to the world and lose myself with every stroke of the brush on my willing subject, battling away thoughts and images that seem vent on crushing my mind. With every new stroke on the table, I am kept safe.
By the third day, my hands were starting to cramp, my back ached and I felt exhausted. “Maybe I need some air, yeah that’d be nice.” I mumbled to myself. “A good meal and a beer maybe, what time is it anyway?” Checking my phone, (which took a while to find as it was under all the mess) I see that it was a little bit after nine-twenty in the evening. “A late dinner, then.” After a nice invigorating shower, I proceeded to get ready trying not to notice that I had too many toothbrushes while I went through some half hearted grooming routine.
I breathe in the cool night air, which was a refreshing change from the smell of stale cigarette smoke and sweat. It was just a short walk to the restaurants across greenbelt park. I lighted a cigarette and started walking. The park was nice this time of the evening, absent are the daily commuters milling to and fro work or home like cattle on a never ending cycle of the mundane. The park was dimly-lit with yellow lamps which cast dark shadows creating small inviting spaces ready to embrace you, to protect you. I stayed away from the central commercial area. I wasn’t in the mood for a crowd. I headed towards one of the office buildings along Aguirre, towards this little known locale I knew would be safe from the “Gimmick Crowd”.
“Clannad” was one of those pubs usually frequented by expatriates but shabbier. It was decorated to look like a warm local Irish pub, the kind where you’d know everyone. Darkly lit with candles on the tables, old yellowing photos of Irish immigrants, a couple of football team’s posters and other Irish pop memorabilia adorned the walls. I was half expecting to find a little Leprechaun greet me when I entered, instead a waitress named “Maryfe” opened the door for me. I stood there in the middle of the room taking it all in. A nice relaxed atmosphere hung in the air. It was quiet with today being a weekday (as I was surprised when I checked the date on my phone), there were about four people, including Maryfe and myself present at that time. Two foreigners where at the bar having a conversation about their Filipino wives or girlfriends from what I could hear. They looked forty-ish and had their coats draped on barstools next to them apparently they must have just come from work or something. The blonde haired one, at least it was blonde from what I could see as he was balding, was laughing at what his pudgy friend had just said. I shuffled myself into one of those counter tables at the corner of the bar as soon as they noticed me.
I had a light meal of honeyed chicken and rice to accompany it. The chicken was a bit dry for me but at least I finally got a full freshly cooked meal into my stomach. I asked for a Pale Pilsen from Maryfe and lit up a cigarette, relaxed in having a somewhat satisfactory meal. With the remains of my meal taken away, I indulged myself in looking at the other decorations around the pub (while I had my Pilsen). I noticed that aside from the two foreign guys at the bar, opposite of me, at the other end corner table was a woman.
I wondered if she had been there before I got in my seat. “I think I would’ve noticed that” I thought and casually, I stole glimpses of her. She had shot curly hair and wore a yellow sundress that fit perfectly her frame, showing off her beautiful shoulders and neck. She was reading a book in the dim candlelight, seemingly oblivious to her surroundings. I ordered a second beer and stared at my hands. There were still remnants of ink on them. I didn’t bother to clean them thoroughly knowing I’d be back at my place going at that coffee table again. This momentary lull in time was opening enough for the gremlin thoughts to come swimming back into my head. My hands melt into a photograph of two people in a loving embrace, the man giving the woman a kiss on the cheek as her eyes twinkle and her face flushed red dissolving yet again to an image where their faces contort into surreal expressions, a mixture of pleasure and pain as he moves inside her, his sweat dripping on her back...and she moaning maniacally… and my heart beats from inside my chest to their rhythm. With every succeeding pump growing stronger and stronger, threatening to break my ribs, burst open my pectorals and erupt out of my body…
Then I look up and right in front of me is that woman in the yellow sundress. I stare at her emptily half noticing her mouth moving. “Were you the one moaning?” I thought. “I said, is it alright for me to join you?” she says. I can see she is wearing a pout.
I snap out of the episode and my eyes focus on her at last. Lost for words, I merely nodded. “Thanks” she says smiling. “For a moment I though you were going to tell me to get lost there”. Finally regaining my composure I stood up and offered her a seat. “No problem, go right ahead” I answered.
She was taller than I thought, around five foot five, she stood with an air that she posed an intimidating figure, yet didn’t care who noticed. The boots she wore rose to just below her knees. These were no lady’s boots; they looked more like army boots worn by punk bands. The whole ensemble was a battle of contrasts, with the yellow sundress giving off an air of delicate brilliance, and the boots warning that they could stomp on one’s face at a moment’s notice.
“Sorry, I just had to get them off my back.” Indicating the two white guys. Rolling her eyes she told me how “Pudgy” had come up to her and tried to buy her a drink and her falling short of telling him to go screw himself. She paused and asked for a beer from Maryfe who was giggling as “Pudgy” had directed his flirtations on her instead.
“I do hope you’re an artist, otherwise those fingernails would be too gross”, she said nonchalantly.
“Yeah well I try” I answered “I was just getting a bite to eat before going back to work” “So what are you working on?”
I was initially irritated as how this person would invade my privacy, I had a mind to just get the hell out of there and leave her to the sexual advances of the bar patrons. Yet I found her extremely interesting, with her “devil may care” attitude. I wouldn’t exactly call her my type, but I could sense we had some things in common. Social misfits living on the fringes of normalcy. One could tell she wasn’t your typical Manila Girl. Or typical Filipina, for that matter. I proceeded to explain how I had no preconceived notion on how the coffee table’s mutation would turn out, on how I was painting more on the grounds of clearing my mind at the moment and slowly building up a composition as I went along.
Maybe it was the alcohol or maybe I was afraid of those terrible images entering my mind again but after about seven beers into the late hours and I was still captivated by our conversation. I was able to piece together that “Bree” was originally from Bicol and had moved here to Makati two years after graduation, got a desk position along with taking odd jobs on the side and have been living alone (in between boyfriends) in her condo unit in Makati. She had a preference to foreign men as she felt that her attitude and intelligence had an intimidating effect on the typical male Filipino. I went on a fiery tirade to the defense of my/our race to which she replied: “Well guys like you are rare around here”. We talked about conformity, alienation and the latest call for attention of Madam Auring. The conversation was random at best, but it was alright. Order seemed to be trivial in this particular chat.
We ended up going for coffee before calling it a night. “I’d like to see it”, Bree said, stirring her café Americano. For a moment I had no idea what she was talking about.
“Wha-“ I started. “That coffee table, I mean.” She cut in. “Obviously you’re in this predicament because of a girl. I’d like to see what kind of work could come out of that mindset.”
I showed her in and made a lazy attempt to clean up the mess just enough so we could walk around the place. While she stood there in the middle checking around the room, I plopped myself down on my bed and lit a cigarette. “It’s over there, just be careful I don’t think it’s totally dry yet”. “Jeezus! I’d think you’d have the impression I wasn’t dumb by now?” She shot back. “Well you do seem to be full of surprises, so I’m not dismissing the possibility” I said with a smirk. She rolls her eyes. Funny how that particular eye movement, or mannerism seems a lot more attractive than the usual eye sparklings et al. I had been accustomed as being requisite for classic beauty. She stood there awhile, holding a cigarette, frowning down upon my child-table, my creation.
“I don’t like it”, she said, her back to me. “You’re intents, being overly romantic, and all, is just that, romantic. It doesn’t mask it being third rate work, in my opinion”.
I stumble. Then I stood up and stepped behind her. “Well I’m lucky to be privy to your creative, almighty criticism”, I said louder than I intended. “I guess it’s time for you-“ “but I like you” she said as she turned around to face me. She had on a devilish smile and her face inched towards mine. Our eyes locked, I inhaled her breath as she whispered “you’re too easy”.
And I whisper back, “And you’re a maelstrom”.
I wake up to find her gone, as I walk to the kitchen to make some coffee I realize that I didn’t even get her number or anything that could mean us meeting again. It was a bright morning where you could see the specks of dust float in the sunlight, full of promise. “So she’s gone and left me as well” I say to myself. I light up a cigarette and glance at the coffee table. “Yep it looks awful”, I say laughing to myself “Now where’s that sandpaper?”

There was this really famous Grafitti wall up a few years ago..and there would be new graffiti every week, its so nice to see artists work too...this graffitti wall leads up to an art center..there are lots of art and sculpture hubs and parks here..
I think this wall has been demolished since the land owner strated building their development already..
If you guys visit Beijing..

Ahh, I'm familiar with tulco. I found some on national bookstore. But they have limited colors. Anyway, I made a handpainted shirt before and I used acrylic, but after washing the shirt, it fades quickly. Kumusta yung tulco? Maganda ba yung paint nun? Hindi agad nagfafade bro? :) Thanks

And speaking of frames, you guys may opt to specify "non-glare" / matte glass (for those who haven't tried it yet), a type of clear glass that doesn't reflect light (good for taking pictures of your framed artworks).

I've just finished reading this thread (all the way from page 1 up to the last actually) and I'm so glad to have just discovered that there's a place here in PM where we can share our other sides. All the drawings, sketches and paintings that you've shared are so amazingly awesome! Long long time ago I also tried doing oil and water color and managed completing a few. Below is my one and only oil painting. The only one (oil) in my possession to say the least. Even before the creation of the one below, I actually already managed to make one but lost it when I sent it out supposedly for framing. But that"s another story. Well back to the one below, I actually just copied the image from a photo in our encyclopedia, as far as I can remember. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as you enjoyed those posted earlier. Happy viewing!

Idol, ang galing mo talaga Klause!. Ang hirap pa naman ng pen, there's almost no room for error.
Tanong lang ako bro and to all our friends out there, because I know that you are a heavy paper user: How do you keep mold from damaging your drawing? I've attached one of the two water colors that I mentioned to you and if you'll look closer there are specks of molds on its surface including the matting. Mukang kinain nya pa yung water color kaya kumupas.
Gusto ko din batiin si Dextsy sa "On a Day Like Today" ang ganda at kakaiba! What exactly is mixed media? Excuse me for my ignorance. Super old school kasi ako e kaya I really enjoy learning new stuff from you guys.

Hey Teob,
Again salamat. Yung sa watercolor work mo, sadly parang irreversible na yung mold. But to prevent it sa maalala ko e yung pag gamit ng clean and maintained brushes at most of all, water. I'm not sure though if there are other suggestions sa prevention ng mold. Pero yung effect sa gawa mo (Pingga) parang wash na rin at splatter he he he. Ganda ng color combing ginamit mo.
Dextsy, salamat sa tip. The texture at effect ng fine brush is striking.

leave it under the sun to kill the molds. thats what i've been told, and remove them from the frame once in a while... i'd throw away and replace those mat boards too.

Hi Weed, thanks also for your advice. If Klause has given the "Preventive" advice, yours is the "Corrective" one. Both will be very useful to all the PM artists out there. Ganda rin ng drawing mo. Hope I could also learn your shading technique.

Illustration of the "squash and stretch"-principle: Example A shows a ball bouncing with a rigid, non-dynamic movement. In example B the ball is "squashed" at impact, and "stretched" during fall and rebound. The movement also accelerates during the fall, and slows down towards the apex (see "slow in and slow out").
Animated sequence of a race horse galloping. Photos taken by Eadweard Muybridge. The horse's body demonstrates squash and stretch in natural musculature. The most important principle is "squash and stretch",[4] the purpose of which is to give a sense of weight and flexibility to drawn objects. It can be applied to simple objects, like a bouncing ball, or more complex constructions, like the musculature of a human face.[5][6] Taken to an extreme point, a figure stretched or squashed to an exaggerated degree can have a comical effect.[7] In realistic animation, however, the most important aspect of this principle is the fact that an object's volume does not change when squashed or stretched. If the length of a ball is stretched vertically, its width (in three dimensions, also its depth) needs to contract correspondingly horizontally.[8]
Anticipation[edit] Anticipation is used to prepare the audience for an action, and to make the action appear more realistic.[9] A dancer jumping off the floor has to bend his knees first; a golfer making a swing has to swing the club back first. The technique can also be used for less physical actions, such as a character looking off-screen to anticipate someone's arrival, or attention focusing on an object that a character is about to pick up.[10]
Anticipation: A baseball player making a pitch prepares for the action by moving his arm back. For special effect, anticipation can also be omitted in cases where it is expected. The resulting sense of anticlimax will produce a feeling of surprise in the viewer, and can often add comedy to a scene.[11] This is often referred to as a 'surprise gag'.[12]
Staging[edit] This principle is akin to staging as it is known in theatre and film.[13] Its purpose is to direct the audience's attention, and make it clear what is of greatest importance in a scene;[14] Johnston and Thomas defined it as "the presentation of any idea so that it is completely and unmistakably clear", whether that idea is an action, a personality, an expression or a mood.[13] This can be done by various means, such as the placement of a character in the frame, the use of light and shadow, and the angle and position of the camera.[15] The essence of this principle is keeping focus on what is relevant, and avoiding unnecessary detail.[16][17]
Straight ahead action and pose to pose[edit] These are two different approaches to the actual drawing process. "Straight ahead action" means drawing out a scene frame by frame from beginning to end, while "pose to pose" involves starting with drawing a few key frames, and then filling in the intervals later.[14] "Straight ahead action" creates a more fluid, dynamic illusion of movement, and is better for producing realistic action sequences. On the other hand, it is hard to maintain proportions, and to create exact, convincing poses along the way. "Pose to pose" works better for dramatic or emotional scenes, where composition and relation to the surroundings are of greater importance.[18] A combination of the two techniques is often used.[19]
Computer animation removes the problems of proportion related to "straight ahead action" drawing; however, "pose to pose" is still used for computer animation, because of the advantages it brings in composition.[20] The use of computers facilitates this method, as computers can fill in the missing sequences in between poses automatically. It is, however, still important to oversee this process and apply the other principles discussed.[19]
Follow through and overlapping action[edit] Follow through and overlapping action is a general heading for two closely related techniques which help to render movement more realistically, and help to give the impression that characters follow the laws of physics. "Follow through" means that separate parts of a body will continue moving after the character has stopped. "Overlapping action" is the tendency for parts of the body to move at different rates (an arm will move on different timing of the head and so on). A third related technique is "drag", where a character starts to move and parts of him take a few frames to catch up.[14] These parts can be inanimate objects like clothing or the antenna on a car, or parts of the body, such as arms or hair. On the human body, the torso is the core, with arms, legs, head and hair appendices that normally follow the torso's movement. Body parts with much tissue, such as large stomachs and breasts, or the loose skin on a dog, are more prone to independent movement than bonier body parts.[21] Again, exaggerated use of the technique can produce a comical effect, while more realistic animation must time the actions exactly, to produce a convincing result.[22]
Thomas and Johnston also developed the principle of the "moving hold". A character not in movement can be rendered absolutely still; this is often done, particularly to draw attention to the main action. According to Thomas and Johnston, however, this gave a dull and lifeless result, and should be avoided. Even characters sitting still can display some sort of movement, such as the torso moving in and out with breathing.[23]
Slow in and slow out[edit] The movement of the human body, and most other objects, needs time to accelerate and slow down. For this reason, animation looks more realistic if it has more drawings near the beginning and end of an action, emphasizing the extreme poses, and fewer in the middle.[14] This principle goes for characters moving between two extreme poses, such as sitting down and standing up, but also for inanimate, moving objects, like the bouncing ball in the above illustration.[24]
Arcs[edit] Most natural action tends to follow an arched trajectory, and animation should adhere to this principle by following implied "arcs" for greater realism. This can apply to a limb moving by rotating a joint, or a thrown object moving along a parabolic trajectory. The exception is mechanical movement, which typically moves in straight lines.[25]
As an object's speed or momentum increases, arcs tend to flatten out in moving ahead and broaden in turns. In baseball, a fastball would tend to move in a straighter line than other pitches; while a figure skater moving at top speed would be unable to turn as sharply as a slower skater, and would need to cover more ground to complete the turn.
An object in motion that moves out of its natural arc for no apparent reason will appear erratic rather than fluid. Therefore when animating (for example) a pointing finger, the animator should be certain that in all drawings in between the two extreme poses, the fingertip follows a logical arc from one extreme to the next. Traditional animators tend to draw the arc in lightly on the paper for reference, to be erased later.
Follow through/Overlapping Action: as the horse runs, its mane and tail follow the movement of the body. Secondary action[edit] Adding secondary actions to the main action gives a scene more life, and can help to support the main action. A person walking can simultaneously swing his arms or keep them in his pockets, he can speak or whistle, or he can express emotions through facial expressions.[26] The important thing about secondary actions is that they emphasize, rather than take attention away from, the main action. If the latter is the case, those actions are better left out.[27] In the case of facial expressions, during a dramatic movement these will often go unnoticed. In these cases it is better to include them at the beginning and the end of the movement, rather than during.[28]
Timing[edit] Timing refers to the number of drawings or frames for a given action, which translates to the speed of the action on film.[14] On a purely physical level, correct timing makes objects appear to obey the laws of physics; for instance, an object's weight determines how it reacts to an impetus, like a push.[29] Timing is critical for establishing a character's mood, emotion, and reaction.[14] It can also be a device to communicate aspects of a character's personality.[30]
Exaggeration[edit] Exaggeration is an effect especially useful for animation, as perfect imitation of reality can look static and dull in cartoons.[14] The level of exaggeration depends on whether one seeks realism or a particular style, like a caricature or the style of an artist. The classical definition of exaggeration, employed by Disney, was to remain true to reality, just presenting it in a wilder, more extreme form.[31] Other forms of exaggeration can involve the supernatural or surreal, alterations in the physical features of a character, or elements in the storyline itself.[32] It is important to employ a certain level of restraint when using exaggeration; if a scene contains several elements, there should be a balance in how those elements are exaggerated in relation to each other, to avoid confusing or overawing the viewer.[33]
Solid drawing[edit] The principle of solid drawing means taking into account forms in three-dimensional space, giving them volume and weight.[14] The animator needs to be a skilled draughtsman and has to understand the basics of three-dimensional shapes, anatomy, weight, balance, light and shadow, etc.[34] For the classical animator, this involved taking art classes and doing sketches from life.[35] One thing in particular that Johnston and Thomas warned against was creating "twins": characters whose left and right sides mirrored each other, and looked lifeless.[36] Modern-day computer animators draw less because of the facilities computers give them, yet their work benefits greatly from a basic understanding of animation principles, and their additions to basic computer animation.[35]
Appeal[edit] Appeal in a cartoon character corresponds to what would be called charisma in an actor.[37] A character who is appealing is not necessarily sympathetic – villains or monsters can also be appealing – the important thing is that the viewer feels the character is real and interesting.[37] There are several tricks for making a character connect better with the audience; for likable characters a symmetrical or particularly baby-like face tends to be effective.[38] A complicated or hard to read face will lack appeal, it may more accurately be described as 'captivation' in the composition of the pose, or the character design.

Teob, thanks. This thread has been a good venue for inspiration and hopefully mag evolve into a community.
Architect Gandy, Post mo di yung mga ni-render mo. I stole a lot of techniques from books on rendering. :)
Maybe it may be too general a statement, pero naninwala akong Disney has inspired the illustrators in us to an extent. I remembered a phase na lahat ng cartoons na guhit ko ay based sa pear shaped body figures ng Disney. And the gloves for the instant "kiddie factor" accessory as formula.

And for some reason, an awesome photgrapher wants to buy the "blinded" one (last. Ilalagay daw sa studio niya. :)
Hey Kitty,
I love the colors on the first one. I'm no authority on H2O color, but i've experienced different results on dry-on-dry /wet on wet/ wet on dry techniques, experimenting with brushes. Have fun!
Thanks Cel1916, she never fails to inspire. I'll scan her earlier work soon.

Salamat haha. And I sometimes get too attached to my art? Parang ayaw kong bitawan haha :-o

This one's NOT my work, but a recent work of my aunt which I'd love to share with you. She uses pencils and draws freehand. Even past 70, she doesn't use any other tool except her eyeglasses.
Salamat haha. And I sometimes get too attached to my art? Parang ayaw kong bitawan haha :-o
Hey Kitty,
Yup.
Share ko lang yung uncommon way niya of doing things. She starts with the shape face, unlike sa usual technique of starting with the eyes and the nose.

Gandy, yeps. Siguradong affected naman ang caricaturists. Tweak tweak lang, print agad - done.

I think it good..you really dont have to price work too much...as long youve got a steady stream of buyers here and abroad..and you can do reprints or redraws of popular selling items....all will be well..and wait for that big break... bread ang butter kung baga...at least your utilizing your inherent talents and earning off from it..kesa sa working for "the man"..di ba?! with proper budgeting and saving..I guess kaya naman...lakasan lang ng loob at kapalan lang ng mukha.. may nakikita ako sa instagram..pinapabid pa niya mga drawings niya..(though in my opinion medyo sablay pa tirada niya) pero may bumibili..pa $60 $60 dollars lang siya pero pagnacompute yung volume..laki nun.. and isa pa madali at mura siya iship out kasi magaan..

10 usd and you sell 10-20 prints in a month...not bad...yung mga 10 prints..mga simpleng postcard size lang..mas big bucks pag mas malaki at mas madaming details..
not bad! depende nalang sa skillz mo and how you build your client base...hmmm..this is good..at least your buying something meaningful kesa mga crap, cheapo disposable stuff..

Away for more than a week and a lot of great things here! Inspiring!

How is drawing with paper and pencils different with using a computer?
Maybe I can draw better using a pc. LOL!
its easier to edit or get rid of mistakes on a tablet. with pencils, theres more control and easier for shading and details. i use both, but like the good old pencil and paper better.

Question guys,
So did you learn how to draw and paint? or did you just realize that you know how to when you were a kid?
Is it an acquired skill or inborn talent?

In my case,I really worked hard for whatever you can see now. I liked to draw since I was a kid and almost everyday nagdo draw ako. I am working hard right now sa anatomy part, I really suck in that area, pati sa pagcolor. I still have a long way to go. I am the type of person kasi who has lots of ideas in mind, pero I need to work really hard to put it into fruition. Most of the time trial and error pa. Haha. Unlike those na effortless lang talaga. :( envy much haha.

Gets. So Its like you have it in you, parang aptitude, then you also have the interest in it. Kaya you work hard to get better at it.

ako im born into a family of artists, poets, painters and musician so I guess its "in the blood" pero syempre naniniwala din ako sa "nurture and nature".
altho aaminin ko nagsuffer significantly ang "freehand skills" ko simula nung advent of computer imaging technology.. way back nung bata ako I even make "comics" so that I can draw lang.. tuwang tuwa mga classmates ko nung elementary and college with all the things that I draw.. they even ask me sometimes to draw PORN.
anyways I can say na ang sketching skills ko ngayon eh 50% nalang ng kaya kong gawin nung bata pa ako.
I am more adept now in doing illustrations and graphics using gadgetry and software..
anyways just want to share yung mga doodles ko for my gf..
my lines are not that smooth anymore as my strokes are no longer solid unlike nung bata pa ako.. mas sanay na ako gumamit ngayon ng trackpad, mouse and tablet.
WAG NYO PABABAYAAN ANG FREEHAND SKILLS NYO.. since ako nagsisi talaga ako bakit pinabayaan ko just because of technology.

except for a few youtube videos, i never studied it and i just learn by doing it over time -- like, 'oh, if i do this, it looks better', or 'hey, drawing a nose like this is easier!'
my family's always been artistic though. my mom is ridiculously good, and my grandpa, and so many relatives. maybe its that. they tried to get me into it when i was younger, and my mom would tell me that i needed to learn shadows and light and shit. didn't really care about all that... still don't. i only draw when i'm bored or when theres lull moments at work.

Wow. I am from a family of weirdos but not artists hahaha. The style I have now, I studied via my observation of my surroundings and my own theories along with checking out the styles of other people. I suck at digital stuff. Hahaha.
Being born in a family of artists sounds nice no? Though I still prefer my weirdos hehe. No pressure kasi hihi

Its interesting to know from you guys stories that:
1. Its true that it's in the blood. Hence, there are families of illustrators and painters.
2. The talent/skill can regress without practice.
3. Technology, being able to make your art easier to perform, also takes a toll on your fundamentals (drawing by hand for example).
How does being able to do it thru technology affect the joy in doing it?
I'm guessing you guys are more proud/happy of doing it by hand talaga? Kasi its more of an art and natural?
And about using tools, I'm also guessing if you draw as your job, you'd use tools (computer, ipad, etc...) so you can draw more/ easily?
Title: Re: Illustrators / Painters / Artists Thread *merged*

^ Believe me bro mejo nakakadepress yung feeling na kahit anong gawin kong magdrawing/sketch ngayon via freehand eh "nangangalay" na yung kamay ko after a while.. imagine yung inis ko whenever that happens, its like nawala yung natural talent mo all because I embrace technology... and since its also part of my job to do so, pero alam ko naman na I could've maintained it if I get to do it all the time than spend the art with the help of gadgetry.
tama ka iba pa rin ang feeling pag freehand ang sketches/illustration mo.. yung tactile response ng lapis sa papel, yung autonomous sensory-meridian response mo kapag naririnig mo yung tunog nung lead scraping on paper.. then ofcourse yung finish product, it can be really satisfying to do so.
using digital means kasi eh nawawala na yung "talent" behind it.. all that remain is the "skill" of the digital artist on the use of software and hardware altogether to create an artwork.. sa digital art yung mga smudge, shadows and depth eh pwede na gawin via filters so meaning even a person who never really tried drawing via hand can create nice artworks with smudges, shadows and depth via those filters sa software.. ibig sabihin hindi na talent ang labanan eh.. "skill" na.
and we all know that anybody can learn Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.. youtube and google lang yan.
I sketch ideas first traditionally then convert them into vexel or vector art.
:) :)

it doesn't. its just another medium. i like using my tablet too. if it wasn't for that, i'd never draw anything in color, because i suck at colors IRL and don't have the balls to ruin my drawings.
also, i don't believe doing it digitally vs. by hand makes it less of an art.

hybrid nga for me..
in architecture..I still rely on sketches..for the initial ideas and forms..then plot it out the 2d drawing for exact measurements..then..off to build a 3d model to explore those little details you can see sa traditional methods..
I still believe in sketches..a nice drawing pen or pencil..yellow trace paper..
mas nafefeel mo kasi yung space..yung lines...at least for me...
and here..design flair, taste and attention to detail still reigns supreme...we usually source out final rendered perspectives to rendering companies..composed of folks whose only skill is photoshop, 3d max...na mga highschool grads..bottom of the barrel folks..na parang nakapulot lang ng adobe photoshop book sa dumpster tapos inaral niya then apply to make a living...

Hey, Maligayang Pasko.
Here's a current one while trying to reminisce one of my dream jobs, inking. This is Acroyear, from the 80s Marvel title Micronauts. Gustong gusto ko yung armor, parang Storm Trooper. Revealing some of my obvious Michael Golden/ Jack Kirby influences here.
Magus, No idea too. I recalled they were putting up local works to revive the comics industry. Pero matagal na 'yun. He created Bishop, di ba?
Ralph, thanks bro. Though I can wing stills (single scenes/cover art perhaps), mahirap 'yung consistency sa paggawa panel after panel. Hehehe. :-D
I envy the like of you who can draw/create thins like that. I'm a comics fan. Yun lang, hanggang fan lang, he he he. May concept ako dati for a comics. But all I can do is draw engineering stuff and stick people. Tapos my writing skills eh malabo for a novel.

Thanks qroon! I guess we will never outgrow comics.

Same din. Well for me ha. Light strokes lang dapat. Gradual lang pag add ng kulay. Madali namang ikontrol pag crayon o colored pencil.

Hi yumi,
Same here: After finishing a current task, I think I'll be putting more weight on illustrating na lang. I may think of giving up music for a long while. I recently read an interview of Jake E. Lee (Ozzy Osbourne, Red Dragon Cartel), who for a while chose to take a hiatus from playing at nag focus sa computers at writing.
So, second hand pedals - anybody interested? Harharhhar

Nice to see this one Kitty. I have not tried Pentel yet, how does it compare with Prang?
Speaking of grad school, yes! I'm done! Back to brushes and picks and GAS. :-D
Still getting used to it! Matapang masyado yun colors haha. Watercolor is forever a challenge to me, kaya mas nakakatuwang gamitin. You never know what to expect.

Question: have you guys experienced what they call art block?( i am not sure if i've got the correct term, some say artist's block but i dunno haha) I think I am in that state right now and I am really having a hard time doing any art works. My mind won't cooperate with my hands and eyes and vice versa. I dunno what happened but I just lost it. Help!

Hi Yumi,
I guess everybody does: creative/writers'/artist block - okay lang 'yun. Even sa gitna ng commissioned works, minsan kakatamad tapusin - what I usually do is set-up a separate blank sheet at dun ako nag rarandom.
Pero as far as lack of drive/inspiration mabuti rin 'yung mag distance muna until it hits back. It may come from other works, o kaya kung ano anong nasa paligid.
tulad ng sabi ni pareng Red:
Kailangan mo ng Inspirasyon.
Ralph! Salamat, kailangan e, as if may choice. :-D

^^ i did the drawing-random-things-on-a-separate-blank-sheet thing and i can't draw anything decent. I dunno but I think my brain started lagging when I got back to work. My body ain't that tired but it feels like my brain is. With regards to inspiration well I dunno what to do about that. Hahaha. I normally get inspiration from my surroundings. But recently I haven't had time to stop and ponder on things. >_<

the watercolor pad I got is pretty small..so I think my subject has to be spot detail stuff...I dont think I can do big scenes.. probably just small streetscape scenes and items.. tipong "old man with dog"..or "bike beside mailbox"..etc.

still working on my colors, haha medyo pale at cold pa ako maghalo..hahah sabi ng tatay ko, brightan ko padaw..
haha yeah! oo tama colored pencil highlights..lalo white color..hehe..
by the way I joined the Urban Sketchers groups sa FB..hehe di pa ako maka labas at maulan dito recently kaya walang mood mag "urban sketch".... medyo strikto lang sila na dapat on the spot sketching..ayon sa "Manifesto" nila....hahaha

Testing the brush pens I got the other day. I normally see them used for calligraphy though i am testing to see if they have sorta same effect as copics. Seriously I have no fvkcing idea how to properly use them. I need to work harder. My strokes are all over the place as well haha. :-D
Anyway I just ordered copic markers. I wanna learn to properly color and create my own style using that medium.

karl, thank you.
And yours too, nice start with watercolors.
Kakatapos ko lang attend ng 3-day workshop on watercolor by one of the masters ng medium, si Sir Edbon Sevilleno (nasa FB pre, look for him), and aside the fact sa galing niya, ang materials really spell the difference. He used 300 GSM up na watercolor paper, and yung background wash pa lang, ulam na! Hahaha.
This time, tone is in the paper (and tools). :-D

Ohhhh. I will look for him bro. I also saw a post on Guhit Pinas, i forgot his name. But he's a master on water color. I can't believe how they can draw such detailed and realistic paintings.
