i started playing guitar at the age of 16 , hindi consistent yun, HAHA
pa onti onti nag improve hanggang sa nagka gamit na pero di pa din ako masiyahan,
nag start sa emo genre
madalas kasi ako mag procrastinate ayun,

gusto ko bumalik sa basic, as in guitar101,
this time yung proper sana,
kasi self taught lang din ako, at nag rely nlang sa Minor Pentatonic Scale,

any advices?
genre to start with?
more on rock siguro, blues feel?

yung tipong magkakaroon ako ng pagkakaabalahan about sa pag aaral ng gitara in a daily basis.

gusto ko i-try yung blues (npanuod ko kasi yung anime na BECK Mongolian Chop Squad haha),
tapos any genre na hindi ganun kabigat like sa metal,
lesson na matututunan ko yung feel at ma mememorize ko yung fretboard
hanggang sa mkpag build ako ng speed enough to learn a bit of shred,
(i know i still have a long way, so di ko din alam tlga san mag simula),

wala e since base to, yung banda na tumutugtog dito nabuo lang thru covers hanggang sa naging showband sila, pero in technical terms wla, ang sabi nya lang sakin "kaya ko natutunan ang eskala, gawa lang ako ng chord pattern na irerecord ko tapos play along, tapos nakikinig nlang ng licks thru videos o sa song"

ayun, pra sken ok din nman yung naging way nya, ako kasi gusto ko matutunan what's what ang meron sa gitara, nagawa kong mamili ng gamit pero yung skill ko nganga as in pramis HAHA kung usapang scale,
laktaw ko ang Major at Minor Scale, nakita ko kasi madali yung minor pentatonic, kya doon nlang din ako mag focus aha,

Swerte ka bro kasi may Youtube na. Lahat ng kailangan mo andun na. It was way harder to learn music theory back in the day. Times have changed.

actually, gusto ko mag music school pero nsa US base kasi ako, wlang nag ooffer ng ganyang lesson
at ang internet namin is limited, isolated island kasi to,
ang internet namin is only 1GB per month, (good for facebook chat lang tlga).
sa office nka block yung social media sites, kaya buti nkkpag visit ako dito sa philmusic hehe,
ayun, gusto ko din tlga matutunan ang theory, in the best way na need ko as possible.,
kaso limited ang option

yan yung benefit ng self-taught: you have all the time in the world to learn the stuff you wanna learn.

sa paid lessons, may time constraints. you are taught for an hour and you apply it sa susunod. homework na lang kung di ko magawa.

sa book: you read the topic, absorb it, practice it, read it again if it confuses you, practice some more hanggang makuha mo na.

sayo na lang yun kung nagmamadali ka matuto.

and you have to hang-out with music-minded people. tambayan mo yung mga showband dyan sa inyo kahit di ka tumutugtog sa kanila.

hahaha, hindi ako marunong magturo actually
pero yan yung ginastos ko dati to learn the basics (nice music school sa alabang town center)
acoustic yung pinaturo ko nun, pero dahil sabi ni teacher eh marunong na ko

yung first lesson namin is about time signatures and basic chord patterns
nagtransition lang sa circle of fifth, chord theory saka yung musical modes (ionian, dorian, phrygian...)

so much for 10 weeks. not to give a review for the school
just encouraging other people na madaming matutunan basta willing ka

simulan mo sa d bitols..plucking..basic chords...barre chords...kapa kapa solo..tas matagal tagal kaya mo nang mag gitar solo sa mga basic chord progression...dyads ...triads...may sayad...

then pag feeling mo gusto mo na mag ala govan o sfogli..mag lesson ka na o sa youtube

finger exercises muna. walang halong biro. mag stick ka muna sa mga finger exercises. once your finger is used to the routine, madali na mag shift sa mga susunod na lesson.

My technique way back internet was a luxury thing. I print out written scales. mas mura yun kesa mag rent ka sa computer shop for hours.

Kung naka laptop ka gamitan mo Ng YTD downloader  ma grab  mo videos sa YouTube. Alam ko na grab din ng Firefox. Pag nag expire ytd burahin mo file at yung installer. Download ka ulit sa site Ng panibagong installer tapos install mo ulit. Unless gusto mo magbayad for upgrade.

From personal experience I was in the same place years ago and didn't really have the extra bucks to pay for proper lessons and partly something inside me tells me I'd feel better if I did it on my own  (didn't turn out as well as I thought it would be haha)

I started playing acoustic guitar tunes for the chix at first  then I saw a guy shred in a battle of the bands in my town and thought I'd want to be as fast as him

Ultimate-Guitar has been my source of learning, not music theory though. I was just learning songs that I like until the dawn of Youtube and got hooked to those theory lessons by Joe Satriani, chromatic exercises for finger strength and then the scales, modes, etc although I later abandoned this because I felt like I wasn't progressing and it feels like I don't know the direction I was going to or if I actually wanted to be a shredder 

But one lesson from Satriani which has helped me a lot is the horizontal and vertical growth in playing, the more songs, riffs, licks you learn the longer you progress in the X axis (horizontally) and the more you learn about theory attributes to your vertical growth (Y axis)

What I'm trying to say is try to balance your guitar practice time between theory and learning songs. Learning songs will keep you interested and give purpose to all the theory that you'll learn.

Also, have a guitar hero or heroes who you will try to emulate. You can try to be a carbon copy of them, draw inspiration from them but at the very least having them will give you a guide on your guitar learning path.

Fast forward to now, I wish I had known blues way earlier so I could have spent more time learning songs of the 3 Kings, Hendrix, Buddy Guy, SRV, Clapton and other blues players so that I could spend time learning more jazzy stuff now.
