franco is a super band. think of urbandub, parokya, and the now disbanded queso rolled into one. and then think of 311 and bob marley....

super band = huh ? ang super band para sakin is a group of super talented artists in one band like paul gilbert (racer x) + billy sheehan (David Lee Roth) + pat torpey (the knack) + eric martin (eric martin band) = mr.big JOE SATRIANI (solo) + CHAD SMITH (rhcp) + MICHAEL ANTHONY(van halen) + SAMMY HAGAR(solo) = chicken feet

I guess Gabby Alipe and Jan Jan Mendoza of Urbandub, Paolo/Ocho/8 Toleran of Queso and Buwi Meneses of Parokya don't qualify as a super band (in the local scene) when they are together. Franco himself is a pioneer in the Cebu rock scene, and his influence is a part of Urbandub's early albums.

I totally agree. They DO sound great live, however. Their music just isn't my cup of tea. Although, if their song gets played on the radio, I wouldn't mind sitting through it.

i mean, i like some of the urbandub stuff ... and Parokya ni Edgar has some funny stuff ... franco just makes me go zzzzz
it must be the genre. i never grew up with it ... and oh, i hate/d sonic youth (except for their cover of carpenter's Superstar)
I get where they're coming from, and I think some of the songs are earworms. But not really my cup of tea, also. Great stuff, and definitely worth a listen.

i preferred franco when he was with jag rock bivouac finalist frank in the mid-'90s...must have been only 15 or 16 then pero ang lalim na ng boses, bagay sa grunge...
franco, the band, does have some great talent, but i agree with the previous posts. medyo overrated at nakakaantok yung ibang mga kanta. in any case, they're still worth listening to, just not on a regular basis... :-)

Since some people may not get the full meaning: Franco deserves to be called a superband if your sense of the word is having members from other famous bands. Of course, your own mileages may vary if your idea includes super-freaking tappity-tap guitar skills and all that. Otherwise, they're a very good band. I don't think musical fireworks was the point - which may lead to the feeling that they're overrated.

yeah this is what i was aiming at. come on guys, frame of reference naman. i know of a few superbands like them crooked vultures, the now defunct velvet revolver and audioslave, etc but this is about franco the OPM band. they're super enough for me thats why i called them super.

Technically yes, superband nga sila if you look at the very definition of a superband. IMHO parang walang input masyado sila Gab,8,Buwi at JanJan kasi if you listen to the songs of InYo halos walang differences yung songs. Pero kasi since they worked on finished songs I guess they were boxed in sa original arrangements. I guess makikita natin yun sa next album. (kung meron.)
All in all, answering the TS' question they are good if your preferences lean towards their sound to be fair their live performances are very good. It's almost like listening to the radio/ipod or whathaveyou.

If they suck... I wouldn't have heard them play at Summer Slam... I'm a HUGE Urbandub fan, and I just wanna say they "hit the spot" for my kind of music...

They seem to like what they do. I can't blame them. Overall, I just find their sound uninspiring but that's skewed towards my sensibilities. Long story short, I think they seem to have formed in the wrong era. If this was the early 2000s, they would probably appear to be more relevant but that's just me. What do I know?

Okay lng nmn. They rock but medyo overrated. Yung songs kasi nila halos parehas lng ng mga groove. para sakin lang 'to. Wag po sanang masamain. They're good musicians pero cguro sa genre nila, i find it a little boring

But before I discuss my question, Id like to admit that I like this band (FRANCO). The vocals/guitars guy has amazing talent, then you have the likes of stars from Urbandub, Parokya, and Queso as part of the casts. My favorite songs are actually "This Gathering" and "Song For The Suspect".
My question would be, just wondering lang po (alam ko kanya kanyang trip lang yan), why do they opt to have 3 guitars (or guitarists for that matter)? I think, IMHO, Franco Reyes and either Gabby or Paolo can already pull of the guitar tandem duties. My thoughts lang kasi if you have 3 guitars, there would have been guitar solo harmonies similar to the likes of IRON MAIDEN, Think Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pearl Jam, etc.
I was actually trying to learn the guitar part of the song "This Gathering" and I can say right now that Guitar II and III play exactly the same riffs, while Franco Reyes' guitar does most of the "Let Ringing" parts, correct me if I am wrong.
They would have looked meaner as a quartet if you know what I mean. Please don't hate me guys, but this is just my humble opinion.

i dont know why ... but i have 2 theories:
1.) song writing - it is very probable that each of the guitar players contribute to song writing, so eventhough they play the same parts, they still contribute other stuff to the table. maybe they should ask one of the guys there to play keyboards? hehehe...
2.) Slipknot theory - they are friends and one of them probably needs something to keep him busy... so they cant just leave him.
all in all though... i think having bands like Franco is healthy for the music scene. i hope they'd stick around much longer.

haha more seriously though contrary to what you hear sometimes they do 3 different things, minsan if you listen carefully may mga ambient sounds. hulaan mo nalang kung sino gumagawa nun. Try watching their live vids to get an idea.

Sakto yong theory mo, malamang may contribution lahat ng members sa song writing... Di ko naisip yon agad. I want them to stick around too, but hoping they'd grab and maximize the opportunity of having 3 guitars para lalong maging EPIC ang gawa nila.

Lahat ng Megadeth/Metallica fan dapat appreciative din sa IRON MAIDEN. There would have been no Megadeth nor Metallica if not for the people behind the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

galing po kasi kadalasan yung majority ng mga songs sa inyo (please correct me if im wrong) pero sa next album sure ako mapapansin natin ung difference from this album kasi mas marami nang macocontribute yung iba especially sa composition ng mga songs :)))

franco is like emo/urban/alternative rock
their band is composed of famous members, but there's nothing really new about their music. people, specially magazine people are just excited about them because they're a super band, but other than that, boring.
npaka dead ng pinoy music ngaun, puro foreign cover ba nman i promose sa ASAP at SOP e, ano pangaba aasahan mo.

Franco is not emo at all in my opinion. Their music is very soothing and has an ethereal feel to it. Most of the songs touch on spirituality. They might not be pushing the boundaries of music but they are still very compelling, at least to me. Big fan here.

I'll admit. I'm starting to like Franco more and more with each listen. My band was honored to have shared the stage with them. And I have to say, they REALLY sound good live.

In my opinion, in Pinoy Pop Culture, a superband means yung members eh mga members na galing sa sikat na banda.

The only songs I know from this band are: Castaway & Song for the Suspect. I love Castaway. But I don't dig the band. 'Di ko din gusto yung version nung Castaway na sila Gabby Alipe, etc yung tumugtog.

Ay sir, hindi po ako nanggugulo, and I am not even criticizing Franco's way of making use of 3-guitar players. I am just wondering lang po coz normally I associate Guitar Trios in bands similar to Iron Maiden, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc (pasensya na with my rather narrow perspective on this approach). But I am glad a few gentlemen from PM who gave good theories on my inquiry.

I actually think Mike Sylvia had a better take on the drums for Franco's music. But even during the JAG Rock Bivouac days, where his band "Frank" became a finalist, I knew he had great songwriting skills.
IMO, I cannot resist compare the inYo and Franco recordings. I guess Inyo's recordings "breathed" more; Franco's was very over the top, and the drums were way too focused. But that's just me.

This band is great, they can write songs very well. And a good voice too. But I can't dig them (same as Urbandub).
And yes sana imaximize nila ang 3 guitars. Kinapa ko yung ibang kanta nila eh parang isang gitarista lang pwede na.

Dahil sila'y subok na. Hindi magpapasok ang mga bagong banda dahil wala namang kasiguraduhan ang mga record companies kung sila nga'y papatok o hindi.

dude, dito saten mag-gagamble ang record company sayo kung bakya ang kanta mo or kung galing ka sa isang kilalang banda na maraming fans/followers. kung bakya ang kanta, madali ibenta sa tao. kung galing ka naman sa isang sikat na banda, may hatak ka na, susugal ang label sayo dahil alam may hatak ka. kaya ang rock scene dito hindi umuunlad. sa ibang bansa, major label or indie label ang band mo, kung talagang magaling, may aanihin. sayo na mismo nang-galing, dahil sila'y subok na. subok ng kikita ang label sa kanila.

anyway back to the topic,ok naman ang franco lalo na nung year 2007 (i think) nung una lumabas yung demo (inyo). sarap pakinggan na halos hindi nakakasawa. pero sana magrelease sila ng bagong album na wala na sa anino nung pinaka una pang franco.

i love Franco... they may not be as technical as some other musicians have mentioned but i really love the groove.. i've seen Franco perform live.. it's really fun! but music is subjective and it's a free country.. others may like the band while others will hate -- i suggest you listen for yourself and find out..

After only 3 years in the local music scene and one album to their name, MCA Music superband Franco, has broken up. Word got out late last week and I have just received the confirmation that the band was indeed broken up. Franco has made a great name for themselves what with members from highly respected and famous band members being a part of the line up. Singer/Guitarist Gabby Alipe and Drummer Janjan Mendoza of Urbandub confirmed the news to me while we were together during Urbandub’s performance at the Baybeats Festival in Singapore this last weekend. Word is, Franco fired the band members, as his goal is to now go solo. Franco will likely be keeping the band name but will instead be working with session musicians from now on end. In short, Buwi Meneses of Parokya Ni Edgar, Ocho Toleran of Queso, and Urbandub’s Gabby Alipe and Janjan Mendoza will no longer be part of the line up. Franco has just recorded his 2nd album and played all the instruments on the recording except for the drums, which were recorded by Janjan Mendoza. There is still no word confirmation on who the new session musicians will be.

fyi kakilala ko yan si shelby at di yan hamak na taga bitbit, may rehearsal studio yan at alam ko ka sosyo niya yung drummer ng kamikaze may tattoo shop sila sa teacher's village sa QC
anyway, for me hindi sila dapat tagged as SUPER band dapat FAMOUS band hehe dahil lahat sila sa banda FAMOUS there is no super about them except for that guy's songwriting skill from urbandub.
tama na ang isang def tones hahaha masyado ng magiging malungkot ang mundo kung madaming gagaya sa def tones at puro ganon tugtugan ng banda

"super" is subjective -- there are technical bands with shallow lyrics but with good melody; there are technical bands with deep lyrics with poor melody; there are non-technical bands with shallow lyrics but with good melody; there are non-technical bands with deep lyrics but with poor melody and so on... so it all depends what matters to the listener for it to become super i also agree with bugoy that they're a "famous band" -- kasi famous naman tlaga - pero for me super na rin sila kahit na hindi super technical and some lyrics aren't so deep kasi the overall of their song is very catchy
music is a matter of preference... there will always be haters who will just hate franco for being famous or for whatever reason.. and yet sila rin ung surprised na walang support ang indie bands... :-( -- dahil kaya feeling nila dpat band lang nila ang dapat suportahan??
one thing i noticed nung 90's kaya daming band na sumikat eh dahil sa support ng lahat for these bands regardless if these bands were technical or not..
hopefully we can get this real support to pinoy music back and stop the hating..

oo nga sir eh. gusto nya atang mas lean ngaun sa reggae yung songs nya ngaun. eh alternative rock kasi ang InYo so mas more on rock ung songs nila sa first album (gawa na kasi ung mga kanta nila. mga dating kanta ni Franco sa banda nya sa US na InYo). Though ok lang sakin ung may reggae parts (Better Days, Beautiful Diversion). Kaso naghahanap ako ng songs na may magaganda rock riffs (astig kasi ung riffs nila sa touch at ibang songs sa 1st album). Kaso parang wala. Ung pinakamabigat nilang song na "To Survive" eh parang nakulangan ako. Haha. Though ang galing talaga nila pag live. :-)

Since some people may not get the full meaning: Franco deserves to be called a superband if your sense of the word is having members from other famous bands. Of course, your own mileages may vary if your idea includes super-freaking tappity-tap guitar skills and all that. Otherwise, they're a very good band. I don't think musical fireworks was the point - which may lead to the feeling that they're overrated.

I think the band "Franco" is pretty ok. I'm not much of a Franco fan, pero I wont diss them.
Hindi nila kasalanan kung galing sila sa mga sikat na banda...they just wanted to play the songs together and they did. I dont think sila may gusto ng hype na "superband" sila...gawa ng P.R.nila yun. :-D

whatever preconceived notions i had of Franco changed when i saw them play the 2012 tanduay rockfest.
you may or may not like their music, but they are a good band. whoever says they aren't have little or no experience gigging and recording.

Si franco nalang kasi yan, wala na sila gab,8, janjan at buwi, leaned more on reggae yung sound kasi parang surfers themesong background ang gusto niya maachieve.. :) laging nasa baler yan..

Franco Reyes himself is one of the best artist here in our country.
sa 1st album. bonus na ung andun sila Gab, Janjan,Buwi, and 8. The songs on the 1st album was already pre-arrange, so basically ang ginawa lang nila , record the songs and put some elements on it. Sort of Individual elements na lang ng artist.
and on the 2nd album, its all Franco.(for me) , well Janjan Mendoza do the drum part. as far as i know meron din contribution ung previous members. pero di nila natapos ung recording ng Soul Adventure, since the FRANCO (original members) broke up.
for me. Franco is the best. IMO. peace.
