Uhm.

Ganito,

So pangit nonetheless.

You obviously don't know much about TONE.  :-D
nako doc...mahabahabang usapan ito. but what chromeknive said is sumwhat the summary. Kasi ang pickups eh part lang siya. Remember a guitar is more than the sum of all its parts. And sometimes when you put pickups in a guitar you have to make them match. Parang damit yan.

You can put active  EMG's on a beat up 50's Gibson 335 and in my opinion that would be a weird combination.

You can put some texas special pickups on a Warlock and it won't only look funny but parang hindi bagay ang tunog. I'm just stating this because of how i feel about these things. Opinion lang ito guys. Most of the time we have to take into consideration the kind of wood involved din.

ang frets/ strings/ action/ pickup height ay ibang usapan pa. lalo na ang effects at ang amplifiers. moreso on the characteristics of the surrounding room(acoustics and stuff. don't know much bout this but i know nakakaapekto din ito).

So lets see..where to begin. try google. it never fails.

Ewan ko lang mga dudes.

I've own one great sounding plywood guitar (a Juno MIJ strat) and one OK-sounding plywood guitar (an Epi(phone) strat).

Yung Juno was an impulse purchase. It sounded so good on a big amp sa Pier. I said ...teka...yung amp siguro yan. So I had it plugged into a small 10watt Ibanez amp and it still sounded great. So out of craziness, I plucked out the 4k for the guitar which was meant to be spent on something else and got the thing. When I got home to examine it, potek, plywood.

Ditto with my Epiphone Special II LP. It sounded better than my RJ solid-mahogany Goldtop. When I examined it, it was also made of plywood. I traded that one for a Boss ME30...some part of me still regrets parting with that guitar.

My Epiphone strat naman was "OK" when I got it in 1994. It was still just "OK" even as I changed its pickups to various configurations. It was also plywood.

So without straining too much over it, there are still some variables that I guess we don't have the answer to yet. Like with a chat with Arie, he was telling me about these luthiers who found this 50-year old slab of ...what was it...I think it was ash. They made 10 guitars out of it, of which only 2 turned out well. And that's from the same slab of old wood !

I will agree with one thing about plywood guitars though. You will have longevity issues. In time the layers will come off one by one, due to the natural humidity of this country. Hardly will a plywood guitar turn out to be an heirloom. But as for the sound...we can never tell until you play any specific guitar.

Teka...other guitars were made out of non-wood materials like the Abel axe, RJ's transparent resin guitars and if I remember correctly, SRV also owned a strat that had a solid marble body. The latter had monster sustain because the marble did not absorb any of the string vibrations :D

may mga murang gitara na maganda naman ang tunog.. or at least decent sounding. Pag kinabitan mo ng maayos pick up yun, magiimprove pa lalo ang tunog nun.

mura <> pangit ang tunog.

...And sometimes when you put pickups in a guitar you have to make them match. Parang damit yan.
Ibig sabihin, parang naka terno yung p-up sa gitara. Ang hirap dyan, hindi mo agad masasabi na hindi bagay yung dalawa hanggat hindi mo pa nasusubukan, i.e., hindi pa naikakabit yung p-up.

Weird, maybe. But not necessarily a bad sounding combination. I've seen and heard a telecaster that had EMGs installed: it sounded good. I've installed TV Jones/Filtertron p-ups (used in some Gretsch guitars) into a Strat and it sounded good. However, in both cases the guitars lost the vibe they are commonly associated with. Take the Strat for example, it didn't sound much like a Strat anymore but it still sounded good.

Yan ang hassle with p-up changes, hindi mo masasabi kung ano ang resulta hanggat di pa nakainstall yung p-ups. Maliban na lang kung meron nang nakasubok at masasabi nya sayo.

Tuck Andress put a Bartolini pickup into his 40s Gibsons.

nasa nag gigitara din minsan. kahit gano kaganda ang tunog ng gitara kung di marunong yung gumagamit masakit sa tenga pero kahit panget ang gitara kung marunong ang gumagamit napapatunog ng maganda  :-)

If it's a "noob" question, then it belongs to the Newbie Corner.

As for guitars with plywood bodies, Sir andrton has one and it sounds good to me.

Dude, even if you place the most expensive pick-ups in you guitar, it does not guarantee that you'll get the sound you're looking for. There are too many parameters. The bottom line is that if you're guitar sounds good to you even if it's made out of cheese then it's good. The only problem is if you start playing in an arena type concert, you will realize soon enought that it's really made out of cheese.
