external hard-drives?

hello_apocalypse:
i've just been given one. it says: right click my computer, then go to manage, then go to disk management, and then it says "perform partitioning and formatting". uhhh, what does that mean? basically, how do i put my files into this external hard-drive? :?

kailangan mo muna siya i format kung naka XP ka ang option mo is FAT32 or NTFS. kung win ME or 98 and option mo lang is FAT32. kailangan mo siya i format para ma recognize ng OS mo
