THE ROOTS
they play live instruments
they have a human beatbox,
live keyboards
dope bass player
stellar drum player
i think they have a DJ now.
and questlove is one of the best MC's out there

if you've seen the movie
BROWN SUGAR,
the first background song is the live version of
"love of my life" by THE ROOTS featuring COMMON
that version of that  song is  from the album THE ROOTS COME ALIVE.
that particular album is really good if you are just starting to know the band.  the album is really full of energy and you can really see how good THE ROOTS are.  although it is not the best album of the band according to critics.
and here is the full lineup:
vocals - black thought
vocals, turntable vocalist, and background vocals - scratch
keyboards - kamal
bass - hub
drums - ?uestlove ( i was wrong about him on my last post )

i am not really sure about the lineup right now but i think they have a more regular DJ now.
anyway, just try checking them out on the web, i'm sure you can find them on search engines like yahoo music.

THE ROOTS are freaking awesome.
their video what they do
which is like a
"how to" make a rap video.
you rent a mansion.
rent cars with the first 100km free.
get "models" to dance around a pool and you drink champagne(ginger ale).
and so on...

their new album is ok their old stuff is better.

talib kweli is better.
or k-os.

just got done with more reserching
here's the latest on their ever changing lineup

black thought - MC
?uestlove - drummer
hub - bass
kamal - keys and guitars
scratch - the human beatbox (vocal turntablist) and percussions
ben - guitars, he is the only white member in the band

i think they lost another MC (Malik B i think ) just before their last album PHRENOLOGY was made.

anyway, i am really enjoying the info sharing on this particular band

thanks guys for responding on this thread that i started

i luv da roots! their single, "Break you off" (w/Musiq) and "Complexity" (Jill Scott) from the album Phrenology mixes hip hop and soul together and gives a fresh sound that can be so relaxing. The lyrics are especially cool, reminding me of poetry in motion. not the typical theme of love lyrics usually heard in pop songs.

"Bad Misses, Throwin RASPBERRY kisses on me...

Is it because he's superficial
Or is he too submissive
Or did I come along and hit you with the FUTURISTIC..."
Well I feel deep in your heart there are wounds Time can't heals
And I feel somebody somewhere is trying to breathe
Well you know what I mean It's a world gone crazy Keeps Woman in Chains It's under my skin but out of my hands I'll tear it apart but

the ROOTS are hip-hop with substance.
they fall in the same category as
talib kweli
k-os
checkmate
ozomatli
medusa
krs-one
common
NAS
etc...

not the [gooey brown stuff] they play on TV.
the good hip-hop gets little to no air play.

If you hate misogynistic messages and would love to see a man DJing through his own tongue, then you should buy Roots.. Jurassic 5 is also an awesome hiphop band.. Musicality and art in hiphop, anyone?
