Don't become obsessed with sounding like one particular player and sounding exactly like him.

I'm about to study sax din.
Currently looking for a nice sounding sax for beginners.
And hopefully senior saxophonists we have here could guide us newbies on our way to being the great saxophonists ever! Hahaha! ;)

Anybody, who'd like to give materials in studying sax? Or could refer VERY GOOD instructors for sax.
Thanks!

By the way, I just joined the Sax Society Philippines in Facebook.
Hehehe.. :D

I suggest you attend the workshop of the Sax Society. I think there will be one tomorrow at 4pm. Dont be shy, introduce yourself and I am sure the members will help you find the right sax and teacher for you.

Thanks in advance.. more power to all of you sax people  8-)

Just a piece of advice from an amateur sax player. Don't delay your plan, start now! There is no hard and fast rule on what sax to start with. although most players pick up alto for a start. Select a good quality Taiwanese made sax if you cannot afford to buy any of the big 4: Selmer Paris, Keilweirth, Yamaha or Yanagisawa. I made the mistake of buying a cheap Chinese made sax (Parrot) and after one year of playing, I junked it for a Conn 24M. Later I bought a Yamaha YAS 82Z which is now my main sax.

I have been playing alto for about 6 years as an amateur. I started with a Parrot which I used for 1 year then junked it. I then bought a Conn 24M alto, a good sax with good intonation and a big volume sound though wanting in aesthetics. About 2 years ago, I got a Yamaha YAS 82Z Custom, a very free blowing sax that needs less air stream to sound a note. Recently, I purchased an LC  601 curved soprano (Taiwan made).

By the way last Saturday, I watched the concert of Euimir Deodato at the SMX Convention Hall. He was backed up by an all Pinoy musicians, well known in their respective fields but I will mention here specifically the horn section: Romy Maiquez (not sure if I heard his surname correctly) on the trombone, Romy Francisco on the trumpet and the Flugel horn, Michael Guevarra on the alto sax and flute and Gilbert______( did not hear his surname) on the baritone sax and flute. Ang sound nila exact copy ng original songs heard on CDs of Deodato.

You may try Salonga Music Store in Araneta Center. Dati may nakita ako sa kanila na Selmer Omega or Aristocrat na Taiwanese made. Ang price ay Php42K. I am not sure if that sax is still available.

It's a great start for a beginner (like me) to practice more and to be inspire.

It's really hard to beat the tone of the vintage sax compared to the newer one...imo. The downside is, you'll have to consider the ergonomics and honestly, it's harder to blow.  eto cguro ang isa sa dahilan kung bakit may mga estudyante na nagku-quit agad dahil sa mahirap daw matutunan.

I agree. I think YAS 23 would be a good choice as in fact if you have  one of that model, there no more need to buy even the high end Yamaha models except if you are after aesthetics consideration. You just have to contend with the fact that it is difficult to find a YAS 23 at a bargain price because it has a good resale value.

If you have a friend or relative based in, or travelling to Hong Kong, perhaps you can ask him to buy a Jupiter sax from Tom Lee Music. The price of a Jupiter student model would not exceed Php30 thousand

I could not recall the specific model numbers of each Jupiter saxes  but based on the reviews of others, it seems that even their student model is ok just like the YAS 23. My Conn 24M athough a student model has a good intonation, big powerful sound, fair ergonomics although lacking in aesthetics.
