in post-processing,

"never overdo your work in post-processing. too much sharpness (light or dark halos around objects), over saturation, too much contrast (blown out highlights and details) etc., those things make your work look unprofessional, while some images look good in those terms, most would look amateur and pretentious."

this helped me A LOT.

in some certain point, i'll have to disagree. for example (out of a million), there is a reason why the Nikon D3x costs $7,500 and the D60 only $500. equipment DOES matter.

as you get used to your gear you realize how your own camera, lens, etc., limits your performance. for example, you cant get descent image quality with your point and shoot at iso sensitivities higher than 400. you cant do real macro shots with your kit lens or a point and shoot cam. you cant take a shot of the moon with a 50mm prime. you cant get pleasing bokeh out of your kit lens. you could get the most out of what you have, but at the end of the day better gear will always be better gear.

haaaayy....

check out this photo (shot by one of our forumites and a good friend, daphne)

a Canon 5D MarkII was used on this shot and the ISO value was pushed up to 6400, yet it barely showed any grain on the photo. I am very sure that neither my Nikon D40x nor your Canon 300D can do that. you know why? because the native ISO of the D40x or the 300D is only up to 1600. pag dating sa night photography or high-action shots, wala na tayong binatbat jan. we'd get grain, blur or underexposure.

try shooting F1 racing or a boxing match and you'd get what i mean. or better yet, try shooting a gary v., bamboo or chicosci concert at night without using flash.  :-D

Use a film SLR and just shoot and shoot!!! Youll never know what youll get until you get them developed... Plus di ka magsasawa sa photography ksi may thrill, Ive known some dudes who got sick of their DSLRs because they do the same thing all over again, pressing the shutter button like a mad idiot... The result: inaalikabok nlang yung DSLR's nila or they ended up selling their gear kasi nagsawa na sila...

My advice... start with film first before going digital... Peace men!!!

I can see some grain there bro. The picture looks a bit underexposed, giving the subject is static pwede naman siguro ng slower shutter speed to make the grains disappear or maybe piping down the ISO for a cleaner image.

Yup gear is important BUT they are just their to make life easier.

The nikon D3S is a tripod killer and a videocam all rolled in one not to mention a killer autofocus.
If i had a D3S i would definitely bypass the years to learn how to autofocus properly coz it will make my life easier but me not much a technique master.

I just put it on AF-C and be done with it. I DO WANT A D3S :x :-D

you may see some grain there, barely. pero imaginin mo naman kung D40 or 300D ang gagamitin mo with that kind of shot. though hindi lalampas ng 1600 ang native ISO ng D40 halimbawa, i'm very sure na mas grainy pa yung D40 kesa sa 5D MkII. what i'm trying to say is that upon experience with different lo & high-end photography equipment, i'd reall say na malaki pa rin ang impact ng gear pagdating sa photography. and though totoo that it makes life easier, i'd even say that better equipment makes shooting the impossible possible.
nung nakahawak lang ako ng D300 shooting a concert, 3-steps ahead agad ako pagdating sa shutter speed eh - so wala talagang blurred photos ni isa. i was even using a 50mm so walang problema sa AF. nakita ko talaga yung advantage compared sa D40x (backup ko). limited na yung ISO, wala pang AF.
tanong: ano pa kaya kung naka D3s tayo? FX tapos lalamapsuhin pa ISO ng D300. 8-)

If you think you'll be better because you own the latest camera, you're wrong. And you're a loser. -Max Mortillaro

I kind of agree with this guy. Henri Cartier Brensson, Ansel Adams, Garry Winogrand, and all other greats, didn't have the technology we have today but they still made great photographs. That, alone, is proof you don't need expensive equiptment to make good pictures.

Then again, I still drool for a D3s... :-D

exactly.  :-)

there's a huge borderline between "expensive/top of the line equipment" and "capable equipment". it just so happened that the capability of a camera body is proportional to it's price. you DO NOT become a better photographer with a very expensive camera. you become a more capable photographer with a very expensive camera.
