Dave Weckl: "The Chicken"
« on: February 03, 2007, 05:25:23 PM »
Finally saw a video of Weckl's band playing Jaco's "The Chicken". Heard this on an mp3 some time ago, from one of his albums.

If you must learn to play one jazz jam tune --- might as well be this one, because everyone plays it :-) Know where the bagsakans are and you'll do fine.

Andami na kasi kapag mag-sub genre pa. Think in terms of bands na lang siguro, bro. Chick Corea's Electric Band siguro saka Return to Forever. Isama mo a rin Weather Report. :-)

Popsicle Toes kasi marami ng nag-revive e. Parang si Diana >Krall< (my bad  :-D) ginawa niya din yun. Swing siya, bro. Yun namang bebop ang sa palagay ko malapit-lapit na example yung "Kape" ng Radioactive Sago Project from their "Urban Gulaman" album. Favorite ko!  :-D

Popsicle Toes was by a guy named Michael Franks. It came out in this album:

And I supposed you are referring to DIANA KRALL. :)

Eto naman yung halimbawa ng bebop:

Dunno if anyone answered your question yet but "The Chicken" would fall under the fusion genre. Originally "Jazz Fusion" was involved in merging rock instrumentation and form with jazz improvisation. It can be as elaborate as prog rock or as simple and basic as a good ol' jam tune which is what Chicken is. Chicken was written by the great bassist Jaco Pastorious who before playing with Weather Report did a lot of time in a lot of bar bands playing soul and R&B.  "Chicken" shows a lot of Jaco's R&B roots especially with the James Brown like horn lines.  What makes it "jazz" are the improvisation i.e. solos.

There seem to be a lot of questions about jazz styles from newbies, I'll start a Jazz history 101 thread that will clear the air. :)

... ummm... IMHO lang po...

Yung tunog ng Radioacttive Sago, medyo mas modal kaysa bebop.

Bebop is a language known not only for the fearsome tempi at which its often played, but the complexity of its harmonic patterns.

While Sago can and does play uptempo swing, their tunes are more often than not, modal vamps.

Sorry... jazz nerd ako.  :-D

Wow, the chicken was not written by Jaco? Guess it was associated with Jaco for so long, people (like myself) assumed it was originally a Jaco song.

please do sir!  I've been listenting to jazz for quite a while but I still have problems clasifying subgenres of jazz.

BTW, have you ever tried listenting to the cowboy bebpop soundtrack?  grabe killer yung sounds dun lalo na yung seatbelts!
