Not too much cancellation on MIDs and HIGHs... Only on LFs. Kaya nga naglalagay tayo ng SUBS sa gitna ( aside from the L/R subs ) to compensate...Tama ba ako? or Tama?

it's not more on the brand of equipments that will be in question to sound right.  in the case of the groups in iloilo,  having a 'wall of speakers' will not equate to really loud sound (or even noise  :?).  some audio fundamentals should be observed.  one very important practice is 'phase checking'.  speakers connected out of phase with each other can really result in a dramatic loss of bass.  with a simple device like a 'phase checker',  you can correct this common audio problem and eventually avoid using those 'wall of speakers' set-up  8-)

may mga iba nakita ko Crown and QSC amplifier and P. Audio speakers .

sir try nu to panoorin....gadgets nila mix din..BBE maximizer, DBX, Yamaha mixer, LEXUS amps & speaker etc..

The Guiness book of Records (1990 ed. p. 155) says:
"Largest PA system: On Aug 20th 1988 at the Castle Donington 'Monsters of
Rock' Festival a total of 360 Turbosound cabinets offering a potential
523kW of programme power, formed the largest front-of-house PA. The
average Sound Pressure Level at the mixing tower was 118dB, peaking at a
maximum of 124dB during Iron Maiden's set. It took five days to set up
the system."

Let me tell you sumtin from the past....why ilonggos are music lover!!! at mahilig sa bayli/sayawan!!

The Dinagyang is a religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City, Philippines held on the fourth Sunday of January, or right after the Sinulog In Cebu and the Ati-Atihan in Aklan. It is held both to honor the Santo Niño and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of Malay settlers and the subsequent selling of the island to them by the Atis.

In the beginning, The Confradia patterned the celebration on the Ati-atihan of Ibajay, Aklan, where natives dance in the streets, their bodies covered with soot and ashes, to simulate the Atis dancing to celebrate the sale of Panay. It was these tribal groups who were the prototype of the present festival.

The Dinagyang is divided into three Major events: Ati-Ati Street Dancing, Kasadyahan Street Dancing and Miss Dinagyang.

Today, the main part of the festival consists of a number of "tribes", called "tribus", who are supposed to be Ati tribe members dancing in celebration.

and so on naging modern na ung street dancing ginamitan na ng makabagong teknolohiya at nauso na ung laban ng sound....at di lang sa iloilo, buong Island ng Panay - Capiz, Antique, Aklan, Bacolod at guimaras ay maraming mga sound set ups din..

Thanks amigo. You're the man

Tulad ng Dispersion angle: If we ground stack them ano ang degree ng comb filtering and Lobing?

If we ground stack them in multiple point source what will be the group delay?

Plenty of air is being moved, but it was moving in too many directions. Sound is arriving at the listener’s location at too many different times because the pressure waves from multiple speaker sources overlapped. A practical example is analogous to throwing a stone into a pond. Even waves spread out in all directions, their energy dissipated uniformly. If they hit any object or barrier, waves are reflected back into the on coming waves causing little wavelets to disturb the even spread of waves.

If you throw a handful of gravel instead of a small stone, there will be a disturbed wave flow right from the first splash. Imagine one speaker source as the small stone and an array of speakers as the hand full of gravel. In the frequency domain, this uneven confusion of waves is called Lobing and Comb Filtering: it results in inconsistent frequency response across the coverage area. In the time domain it’s called multiple arrivals. The human ear is quite sensitive to multiple arrivals, especially in the horizontal plane, since that’s how we locate the source of sound.

Single point source.

2 Point source.

Multi point sources.

The human ear is perfectly designed to hear speech and detect the direction of a sound source due to its stereophonic nature. A sound that arrives at both ears at exactly the same time (remembering 1,100 ft per second) is right in front of you. Sound to one side will arrive at one ear slightly later than it arrives at the closest ear. This fractional time delay between arrival times is how we perceive direction. The ‘phase shift’ (time shift), caused by the differing time arrival changes the sound a little. Small cancellations take place and on a frequency graph you would see a series of deep narrow dips. This is called Comb Filtering.

EXample:
Our first concert situation is an array of two full range boxes each side of the stage at an outdoor festival. It sounds like a simple situation.

Interference Effect

We can see now that any single loudspeaker may have an even frequency response, and the sound quality of a single loudspeaker may be nothing short of hi-fidelity, but that will not be the case once arrayed. With these direct-radiator packaged speaker systems grouped in a cluster, the individual drivers cannot be positioned to minimize time delays between devices and the resulting destructive interference, cancellation and response variations. (Comb filtering). These variations are important because the coverage uniformity in the 1,000Hz to 4,000Hz range is critical for good intelligibility and uniform frequency response from 250Hz to 1,000Hz is important for natural sounding speech or music.

The empirical rule use to be, put up one box or 100 and anything between was trouble. This was found by practical experience that if you put up enough boxes, all the aberrations seemed to even out if you stood far enough away. (Too bad for the people who paid to hear and have the ‘dud’ seats. There will be plenty of them).

So let’s add more boxes to our two-box array? May be that will help.
We have gone from throwing four pebbles into the pond, (two per hand full), to eight. Let’s see what happens.

In the four-box cluster of unspecified Brand-X 2-way full-range boxes, there is approximately 1 meter between the box centers, both horizontally and vertically. (That's a half wavelength at 225Hz, one wavelength at 450Hz, and two wavelengths at 900Hz). At the crossover point, where the horn and the 12" bass speaker in each box are operating at equal levels, there are a total of eight devices operating at the same level with multiple wavelength spacing between all eight sound sources. This is the offset distance vertically, horizontally and diagonally between all devices. Where the coverage of the boxes overlap, there will be significant lobing of the coverage and comb filtering caused by these physical-offset-induced signal delays.
The problem is compounded by the inability of the small format high frequency horns that are used in these boxes to provide high directivity, (narrow focus), in the vertical plane above the crossover frequency. The actual vertical coverage of the horn can be well over 100 degrees (and can approach 180 degrees) at the crossover point, ensuring vertical overlap of coverage between boxes, and destructive interference and cancellation. Above the crossover point, the comb filtering will fall in the critical speech intelligibility range, and the resulting response notches are often in excess of 1/3 octave wide.
(http://8qrsag.blu.livefilestore.com/y1pqfeFuS5T0VyezZpkqrV2mNTnFlX8hMdRtbFSVeV36cegMwHYSh-Vkeo2J8kAv0Af4R7Fx9wlxiX3D92xKEf8xeesodAYwR9h/f11_birth8_11.gif?psid=1)
Below the crossover point, the 12" bass drivers gradually broaden their coverage angle until the boxes each become almost omni-directional. In the frequency range between 250Hz and 1000Hz, very large variations in level will be found, with the highest uniform level exactly on the centre axis of the cluster, and spurious lobes all around that centre hot spot. This produces plainly audible sound quality variations with seating position, and may produce feedback prone positions under the cluster.

Let’s Look at a Graphic Representation:
Wave C is now cutting across wave D out of time sync. The slight time variation (60 degrees) will mean that there is a pressure lag between the waves and they will be working against each other. It’s like a tug of war with everybody pulling at a slightly different time.

What about the fancy system controller?

The problem is related to the physical distance between individual loudspeaker components. The special signal processor/crossover that comes with some loudspeakers can only correct for time offset of the signal between the low and high frequency drivers along a single speaker system axis. The signal delay in the processor cannot adjust for every possible off-axis listening angle in a two-box array. The processor certainly can't fix the additional multiple signal delay variables thrown in by having additional boxes added to the cluster Bottom of Form
So why don't you just equalize it?

Consider the system equalizer that is intended to improve the quality of the sound. All four loudspeakers are connected to the same signal chain, so any change in equalization will affect all four speakers. Which of these frequency response curves would you correct for? A couple of the seats are not too bad, a couple of them (including the house mix position!) are very poor. If you tried to correct the bumps and dips in one location, you would actually be making them worse in other areas.

This is really a non-equalizable problem caused by physical distance offset of all the drivers (this is what is known as a non-minimum phase problem caused by a significant signal delay). Even though the loudspeakers are designed to be arrayed horizontally, there is no way to get around the physical offset problem vertically with small packaged two way direct-radiator systems. There are no delays or equalizers that will fix this problem (until someone develops a four dimensional signal processor).

What if We Try a Different Type of Horizontal Array?
(http://8qrsag.blu.livefilestore.com/y1pwa6AfFO-sjPa24HyfjqViAOQINWnuvUwMV4tWbuX9qanQkT0w6GeNRfMbo9Lr3bVhMWid_c4q5V_f8YHIHoyGAf2fGV35Fjo/2x18turbostylebandpasshco5.jpg?psid=1)

In this particular configuration, the comb filters and peaks are most severe below the crossover point, where there are three 12" loudspeakers and horns widely arrayed. The 12" speakers cannot be positioned to minimize the interference between them because the boxes are pre-configured with a horn and top end with differing dispersion. By the time you get the high-frequency horns pointed where they have to be pointed, the woofers are typically in the worst possible relationship to each other. The laws of physics and inappropriate box selection triumph every time. In fact in this particular instance, the only available correction would be turning off two of the centre box. This would of course result in a sonic hole between the boxes but the Lobing would be much less.

The reason for the extra boxes was not enough SPL to cover the distance. With all the losses and cancellations, severe EQ and headroom loss, we really have not progressed from the smaller array as far as sonic performance is concerned. Remember the dB scale and the human ear? For a slight increase in perceived volume, we must add 3dB, (double the power). So we need a lot more boxes to make a difference.

Don't get fooled, by ‘everybody knows’ generalisations and simplistic solutions.

Just because something appears to be popular, does not mean that it is good. Many of these small rock and roll speaker rigs sound very impressive, when demonstrated with a CD of pre-recorded music. Most listeners are much more forgiving of response variations when listening to music. If you're listening to a system intended for speech or complex music reinforcement, insist that it be demonstrated with a live microphone in the room at real world volume levels.

Is there reasonable gain before feedback? If the speaker system is hung above the microphone, are there bass lobes aimed at the microphone position that will induce feedback? Above all else, is the voice going to make it to the back of a crowded noisy room?

Some compact boxes may sound a bit ‘in your face’ when tested in a shop or small room. This could be because the mid range is very present. Many self-powered speaker systems have been pre-equalized to sound ‘nice’ but you will need those midrange frequencies back again if you want to project clear vocals to the back of the room. For a speaker box designer, those midrange frequencies are the hardest thing to get right because the crossover into the horn is often right in the middle of the midrange. Getting vocals right is the hardest thing because it is the only thing everybody agrees must be there and is use to hearing. This especially applies when you're buying a speech reinforcement system, listen for how well it delivers the speech intelligibility your audience needs and don't get fooled by marketing and technical hype.

Next time you have to put up an array of boxes, familiarise yourself with speakerbox array behaviour with the following tests:
- Time delays simulated and real (phase shift):

Set up a two-channel array together with a digital delay on one channel. Show with pink noise sonic variations with a few milliseconds variations between boxes. Also dB output variations on one box and array behaviour.
- Polarity cancellation:

Hear polarity reversal on one channel electronically and acoustically. Especially try reversing the phase on one element of top end. The image will shift radically. Remember this sound and you will become the worlds best monitor engineer by spotting out of phase wedges instantly.
Physical alignment vertically and horizontally

Put up a poorly aligned array and test with pink noise. Move the boxes into a theoretically less conflicting alignment. Walk around and look for lobes and null points.

Very nice article.  This is indeed very true.  I just attended several SynAudCon seminars recently and sound reinforcement speaker array configuration was given emphasis in the design portion.  A big part of the discussions were on speaker arrangements, selections, arraying, lobing, speaker to amp matching and others that, if incorrectly done, results to bad or "distorted" sound.  If we truly want to improve our sound system knowledge, it is but proper to try to study and understand what is in this article, which can be the starting point of better knowledge on sound systems for each and everyone.  The net is filled with information that can help us in this endeavor also.  It is good for Xelly to share this article.

Today, the main part of the festival consists of a number of "tribes", called "tribus", who are supposed to be Ati tribe members dancing in celebration.

and so on naging modern na ung street dancing ginamitan na ng makabagong teknolohiya at nauso na ung laban ng sound....at di lang sa iloilo, buong Island ng Panay - Capiz, Antique, Aklan, Bacolod at guimaras ay maraming mga sound set ups din..

...Malapit na nga ito mga bossing...More power to IC...,,

Sana bro you can post some pics  :-) :-)
I am just wondering if increasing the size of the voice coil like this new Live18 with 6" voice coil will translate to higher SPL and better response?  And does having a double magnet matter to the speaker's over-all performance :? :?

Sa quality and clarity maganda branded amps like qsc and crown amps pero for Iloilo kulang sa punch and laki Ang bass nila...

Cant say that on youtube :). Kakatayin ka nila doon :-D  I noticed that quite a few in there cant take constructive critisism once you made a slight negative comment which I think a complete ignorance and arrogance

Heard Crown VZ5000 driving 4 full scoops loaded with Fane1000 with no problem at all (Absoulute chest thumping and trouser flapping) :) If the VZ5000 cant spank 4 speakers their must be a problem with the sound engineer or technician :-D
Also heard QSC PL9.0 driving 4 scoops (2ohms) on one side PD1850 loaded and thought that was the best Sub I'ved heard from a lightweight amp. :-D

I rather use the tried and tested MA5002VZ than those China (copy cat)  amps. If you can't get good
results driving subs with that amp, then there's something wrong somewhere from the tech to the sub/s.

After seeing those youtube videos, I found out that they're mostly using those outdated CV folded horns.

Loud, very loud, very very loud,  Yes!... considering the amount of CV horns or boxes in a stack :-o. Those CV horns are loud but not deep enough. A simple reflex box loaded with the same driver will blow it away in terms of deepness and musicality.

Seen a few comment in there about phase cancellation, comb filtering regarding stacking also and I dont think they were happy to know all about it :-( :-D

Honestly,  if they after only loudest, heaviest, deepest and quality at the same time they should consider building proper SUB boxes not BASS boxes (Tapped horn, double reflex or even scoops). Also correct amount of Kick boxes and tops and yes stacking correctly could make a difference too :) in terms of sound. I think the amount of boxes in use now are really getting OTT. 4 to 6 good sub boxes and with a good kicks and tops loaded properly  is enough to cover a basketball court. And I'm really surprised that hardly anyone use Stereo when stacking considering the amount of boxes

I'm sure theres a better way to settle this Sound off or Battle rather than fetching truck loads of boxes :-D.

By the way I'm from Iloilo also    :-D

talagang hindi napapansin yung Amps kasi ang pinapansin ng tao ay yung sound output. besides most of them (audience) are non-technical people in sound engineering

sir may kasabihan the customer is always right...  yung mga nakikinig ay nag rent sa kanila ng sound system pag may fiesta or birthdays... so kung nagugustuhan nila ang
sounds mo.. tiyak marami ka bookings...

author=barracks01 link=topic=188604.msg3656894#msg3656894 date=1338541155]

Gusto nila chest Thumping.. Which causes shortness of breath... I don't think na kakayanin nyo... Because may fear na masira ear drums nyo.

sir the reason i think they dont use the branded amps for subs is because they are designed to drive 4" voice coil speakers... if you notice almost all of the branded speakers are 4" voice coil... while in iloilo they are using 5" and 6" voice coil... so it is harder to drive hence the reason why they are using the china amps...
they seldom  use fane, b&c or p.audio... not because of the price tag... because i notice they will buy it if it fits their needs even if it is a little bit expensive. but because it does not produce the sound output they are looking for.

curious Lang ako sir... Sa average na audience sa setup ninyo... Ilan ba ang "non technical" people? Also ano definition nyo na "non technical people"? Kelangan ba may degree po ba sila sa sound engineering? Curious Lang po.

Not denying that some chinese amps are better than some branded amps here :-D.  But for some reason branded amps are only or mostly designed to drive 4" voice coil is not true :-o. The most common drivers I'ved seen branded amps driving are also 5" voice coil (PD1850/51, VOID V1000/1200, Turbomax and Celestion CF18VJD all with real watts :-)) with no lack in power given the right power supply.

Also noticed the most common type of music being played on this Battle or PAUPAS are hard dance or techno type tunes or remixes (loop type) which I highly doubt that they produce sub 30-40Hz plus content on them.  So yes,  your quite right in saying that they only like chest thumping bass line which are only above Sub frequencies and not real Sub frequencies kasi if they are set for Sub frequencies or Cabs are build for sub duties and playing 30hz + freq I dont think they'll be able to stand right at the very front of a single stack/mini sound let alone on the 16-24 bass cabs. :) But then again baka nga sanay na talaga ang mga eardrum at dibdib nila :).

i dont think na lahat na ilonggos gusto ng ganyang sounds. mantakin mo gusto mo di ka makahinga, gusto mo sirain eardrum mo. they created noise pollution not a good qaulity sounds. LPS 2500 i pang battle mo lang sirain mo lang ang 17k worth of amp. for a nothing.. they are very rich.

Sir I heard sa abroad especially sa states and Europe. 1 speaker per channel samantalang dito sa battle either 2 pcs speakers per channel or 1 pc speaker per channel pag bridge mode...

Yun talaga sound quality and clarity  ang basehan...

Hi, I dont know who or where you get that information from. But I can confirm and guarantee you that most of the guys here in London commonly use 2 speakers each side ng amp o 4ohms pati na rin ako :). Others might run 3 each side but very few people run 4 speakers(2ohms) which I dont blame them also. The most common Sound System I hear dito is mostly Rootikal Sound o mga Reggae Sound System which for me isa sa mga matitindi pagdating sa Bassline.

Thats is also quite true na a few here nga maingat pagadating sa monitoring ng amp. They do run it also to Red pero signal lang hindi solid red :) which even you will probably agree na hindi naman kailangan papulahin ang ilaw if you giving enough power already ang iyong mga speaker. Kasi if you have headroom on your amps hindi mo naman kailangan talaga kasi makakaya ng amp i drive sila. Tsaka you will hardly get to RED if you set up correctly your gains from your mixer, processors and amps .

I'm sure na diyan sa Iloilo they can let this happen kasi commonly naman sa atin dyan mostly sound technician o mga operator lang ang normally nag ooperate ng system hence kahit mamula they dont really care kasi kahit masira hindi naman sa kanila. Again,  I could be wrong pero siguro wala namang system owner na every Battle/Paupas may mga damage sila di ba.

Here's my friend Alf or LIGWA demonstrating couple of his scoop. Apologise in advance music might not really your thing.

Another example from another friend here....1 x CROWN MA-5000VZ powering 4 full scoops Fane1000 loaded. Again distortion is from my crappy phone camera.
