Any of you guys remember this local band called RP BAND? They had an Indie release back in the 80's with the songs Run For Your Love and When Angels March Across The Sky.

Late 80's 'to. A lot of people even thought that it was Ric Segretto while in exile in the US, who sang this song with the band. They are a US-based filipino band I heard at that time. :mrgreen: But I think Segretto was the brother of the vocalist if I'm not mistaken.

Goff Macaraeg (vocals), Bob Aves (Guitars) and Louie Ocampo (Keyboards) are the core members of this "supergroup", came around in late 80s and perhaps most of us could remember the band via the album "Street Legal" that includes the notable composition of Louie Ocampo entitled "While Angels March"...and by the way i still have this "Run" on my player and still enjoying it after almost 20yrs of listening :P

yup. recently discovered this. godfrey (goff) macaraeg is the older brother of richard macaraeg, aka ric segreto.

They really sounded foreign then, galing ng recording at ng song. Early NU 107 days eto ! At a time when The Dawn & Identity Crisis were the only local rock bands who have recorded respectable quality recordings. They were one of the pioneers! RP is a big favorite of mine together with then upcoming local band as welll, FRONTIER of the Take My Hand fame. :mrgreen:

RJ UR 105.9 FM regularly play the songs of RP Band. The station even guested Geoff Macaraig during the Pinoy Rock Show early this year .... Great Band..... Great Album

Is it a whole album or just 2 tracks? I only heard Run and When Angels..........
Back then recording was reel based, cut to cut editing. The talents of the engineers really surfaced.

Hanep naman! Cool Infos ! All the while I thought they recorded this in the US, they even recorded at Tracks ? Probably because of the quality of the recording then na parang stateside talaga, kaya that news somehow medyo kumalat nuon.

Strange Storms. I like that better than Street Legal. If I remember right, it only came out on cassette. I bought that one pero di ko na mahanap ang copy ko. One thing sure, I didn't throw it away. All day I've been thinking kung saan ko tinago yung tape when I moved in to my own place two years ago.
I would be jumping up and high if that MP3 copy can be made available. :)
In return, for those who have the equipment to do a needle drop of Street Legal - my LP is available. :-D

Got 'em all!!! I am playing the first track, Strange Storms. Now I remember why I liked this album so much. Heavy riffs, melodic and the guitar squeals. And do I hear some tapping and pinch harmonics?
Really hope something can be done to have both albums re-released on CDs.

sama ako dyan. noong late 80s isa sa mga songs na kinapa ko yung "while angels march...". i was lucky enough to have worked with mr. louie ocampo 4 years ago and i wasnt aware na siya pala ang composer ng song na yun. goff informed me about this and i might ask louie kung meron siyang copy nung song. :-)

I remember first hearing "While Angels.." sometime in the mid to late 80s and was instantly floored by the song and the way it was engineered: Primera klase! That was around the time I was transitioning to NY for an overseas posting. Asked around the well-known record outlets in the Big Apple (J&R, Tower, etc.) about this song and the people there just gave me this "aling planeta ka ba galing" look. It was only when I returned to Manila in the mid-90s when i found out that Rock Project was a local creation. Boy did I look stupid, yet proud enough to know that it was as OPM as you could get. Would love to give a listen to Street Legal from beginning to end just to hear more from the group - kahit na two decades late.

Actually, hindi ko kilala tong banda na to pero nung pinarinig mo sa akin yung mga song nila, di ako makapaniwala na Pinoy band sila. Mala Firehouse ang dating, galing ng boses at instrumentation. Thanks Karl, muntik ko na mamiss yung isa sa mga magagaling na OPM bands. Rock Project ibig sabihin ng RP, right?

I've been wanting to do a true blue new wave/local night at 6Underground with some of the original 80's bands but couldn't start it as the few I know of have other priorities na (new band, business, family, etc). I hope this would materialize tho.

Wow! Bob Aves pala had an album before with the band RP. I never asked my aunt about this. A month ago my aunt (Grace Nono's mom) stayed with us for a week. She told me he's a very good jazz guitarist. I never had a chance to see or talk with Bob Aves. Guess, I should try to visit Ate Grace. hehe. Guys do know any site where I can download or play their album?

I swear to you people that i really LOVE this band. i remember waking up in the middle of the night everytime nu107 played there songs. back then nu107 is a real rock station. i don't know about this days. well i used three of there songs as my e-mail address just to always remember them.
strangestorm, while angels march, and run for your love. i'm glad to find out that there's some people out there that still remember this band. i just wish they could re issue the cd's so i can buy 10 in an instant. that's how crazy i am when it comes to my favorite band. i bought 3 cd's of violent playground back in 98. well thanks for this topic!!!

Wow!just browsing through Pinoy Rock thread,was surprised to find this one.i had that RP strange storm tape way back in the late 80's.hanep talaga.Bob Aves burned ala EVH,with a few twists!One of the best rock guitar solos you'll ever hear from a pinoy guitarist.(of course,c sir Noel Mendes comes to mind,Hayp Band).a friend told me bout the street legal album,never got one though.When i was with Arnel Pineda(now Journeys' Vox)in 9mm,we recorded a demo,a compo of mine at Tracks studio.the engineer, Angee Rozul,who,after some chat over lunchbreak,turns out that he helped record the strange storm album(as asisstant recording engineer that time,me thinks).He told me of some wild stories during the sessions,which i'm not gonna reveal here hahaha.Anyway,i remember him telling me he did some remastering of some tracks of strange storm,to see how it sounds today, which i think was never re-released,unfortunately.sana nga me mag share din ng MP3 format ng street legal... :-D

Hi my brother rockers,
I'd like to thank you all, Philmusic, radio stations NU107, DZRJ, for showing a stream of support for RP music and for latching on to the nuances Bob Aves and I worked on threshing out all those years ago.. Mike Pedero and Angie Rozul can attest to that as they were there everyday during those days at Tracks. Of course my brother Ric Segreto was a part of making that happen and his involvement was very special as, sa totoo lang, Ric was a rocker at heart and was always into rock music even when we were kids. It was a godsend that we got to record an album together as for the most part, we played a lot of live gigs as a band, he and I, since we were 9 years old. And to have his voice and input on those RP songs, behind my lead vocals, singing harmonies together, is a treasure, to say the least. He would have liked to have done rock songs as part of his career as a singer but record company direction had other plans for him. And I'm sure he would have liked to have known that RP music is still enjoyed today and to be able to get to know the good people, who to this date are listeners and appreciators of these songs for which he lent his voice.
Back in the day this started, there was no internet so information was sparse although we tried our best to get correct news out on the band and it's members but I guess it's happening now... Bob played the guitar and I sang. We collaborated on the writing of some songs and some it was either his or mine with the exception of Louie's songs where it was Louie's music and my lyrics and concept. Both Bob and I handled the production in the studio. Helping each other produce and oversee our tracks. All of the guitar tracks on Street Legal were done with his old Ibanez HSS with Floyd. I don't even remember the model. And I want to say that the humbucker by the bridge was just slapped in there. In fact the hardware was all rusted out because Bob has that "alien" powis going on..hehehe...Couldn't even adjust the bridge saddles because it was a mass of rust.... You've heard of a set neck, well this was a set bridge.... :-P
On Strange Storms he used a brand new Jackson Dinky Strat MIA with a Kahler flush mounted trem, no less, that I had hunted down for him in San Diego one vacation. I know he still has that today as his main guitar. Amps wise it was a Marshall Silver Jubilee 2x12 combo (which Bob later sold to Ka Freddie Aguilar) So whomever has that amp now, if it ain't you Ka Fred, realize what you've got. And sometimes a Scholz Rockman we borrowed from the Harner Brothers. Remember those guys? Kinda the Jonas Brothers of the '80's.
I think we used a Boss DS-1 from Mike P's collection at Tracks, in front of the Rockman, and then out to the Marshall Jubilee for the solo on Keep Our Love Alive as Bob wanted that "horsey" (his words) power neigh-whinny whammy lick for that solo, just to give the solo some hair...If you listen to the lick, for those of you that have that song, the solo intro sounds like a horse rearing on it's hind legs, screaming. That's what Bob wanted that part to sound like and this is what we did to get it. Then a Yamaha DX7 on a Hammond preset through a Leslie 222 for that organ tone. We used a couple of synths for While Angels March and more so on Strange Storms. I think around this time of Strange Storms, Angie Rozul, besides having to keep track of Bob and I wandering off in the studio, was in charge of making sure Mang Dading changed the filters on the air conditioning to make sure we got that fresh air action to assure all the tones got from the amp, Ric's and my voices, to the mics... :evil: :roll:
The record industry was a different animal back then, not like it is now with rock bands of all genres getting support and exposure. Mike Pedero did as much as he could producing the albums Street Legal and Strange Storms. And on Strange Storms he actually paid to have the cassette tapes made for that album besides providing Tracks Studio to record both. It was an Indie release for that album while Street Legal was a Blackgold Records release. There was no vinyl for Strange Storms. So for those of you who have a copy of SS, kudos man. Back then, Bob and I were of the mindset that we had done our parts by making the music, and it was up to the music industry to do their share to get it out. So here it is again, up to the music industry...

It would be a dream come true to actually have a band to perform this material with Bob of course and Louie Ocampo, and we greatly appreciate the call to arms.. Maybe someday..Obviously we are doing new projects now. But RP will stand it's own test of time, I'm coming to find out from you guys...

Bro Goff Macaraeg,delighted to have read your reply.Your music continues to inspire me to this day.As a guitarist,i respect and admire Bob Aves' blazing guitar work on your albums.You guys created a sound that's unique,rocking and very fresh.As i mentioned(again hehe),Bob,Noel Mendes and Wally Gonzales recorded the best ever guitar solos ever on pinoy rock history.Hey,isn't it long overdue for your two albums to be remastered,re-released on CD?And for you,bob,louie,roy and co.to reunite for some live shows for a live CD/DVD release?I hope someone's gonna make this happen.Just the thought sends hairs at the back of my neck stand hahaha.Long live RP Band! 8-)

Wow, 'twas a real treat reading your behind-the-scenes Goff. You and the band deserved more success.
Anyway, I was finally able to find a way to do a needle-drop of Street Legal. I wish I have better equipment and know-how to do the drops. I've done only one song for now - While Angels March (http://rapidshare.com/files/260618912/04._While_Angels_March.mp3.html).
I did some click/pop removal for the MP3. Hopefully it sounds decent enough. For those inclined or more adept in restoration techniques. I've kept the raw .wav rip.
I'll add more Street Legal tracks in the coming days.

i sent a complete compressed MP3 tracks of the Strange Storms album, to bro reyban (if i'm not mistaken).
unfortunately, those tracks were erased from my computer when i did a reformat, hopefully, i saved a copy in my external hard drive.
and sana ma complete ko un street legal album tracks. :-) sharing na lng ksi rare and out of print na ang 2 albums nila. :-)

the way things are going on these days, considering how tight Goff's and Bob Aves schedule, it looks like this will not happen in a year or two. I just hope Bob has not lost his love to rock music.
but Goff may play a song or two with us in the Beatlefestival we are working on, probably on Lennon's death anniversary or Harrison's birthday on February.

He plays guitar and he always tells me that the music from our generation is miles away from their music of today. He has a band and he wants to add run to their setlist. Baka meron sa inyo na may alam kung saan makakahanap ng tabs. Ang hirap daw kapain e. Thanks!

Plus, any Bob Aves guitar solo on any two albums requires great rock gtr skills, in technique and sound. :-\

Bob Aves posted on his wall in FB - albeit a tribute to Tracks Recording studio (where RP Band recorded their 2 albums). Being an RP Band fan, i placed some comments there hehe.
"Joey Narciso: makikisali lng po. looks like, a get together/reunion/bonding of RP Band taking shape? a (Angee Rozul) remastering/re-release of the 2 RP albums on CD a possibility? (keeping our fingers crossed)"
Mike Pedero of Tracks also replied comments. Here's some:
"Mike Pedero: @Joey, the masters of the first album on 1 inch multitrack tape was destroyed and there are no more 1 inch tape machines available. The 24 track 2 inch tape is rather complicated to remaster because of the complicated tracking that included synthetic drums and all. Will see, maybe in the future when I can set up a new control mix room and maybe move all to digital. A properly acoustically controlled room is important in making sure that the sounds are correct in remixing. Even if done near field, the acoustics play an important factor because of reflections. In time, maybe."
Sad news right? But something to look at here:

IMO, I haven't heard any rock recording as "foreign" sounding as RPs "Strange Storm" album, the first song (strange storms) on side A is a mind blower, kaunting linis lang (hiss and garble, due to tape age), mismo na talaga, 80s na 80s! And the musicianship on the tracks are exceptional! Street legal is ok too, kinda early 80s late 70s sound to it, but awesome songs, all of em are my favorite!

Back in 2000, me and my friend went to Galos (now 19 EAST) to watch Bob Aves' "Inner Country" album launching. After the gig, we approached him to have our RP cassettes (Strange Storms and Street Legal) signed....nagulat siya and he uttered ,,,"Tang*na meron pa kayo neto?". Hahaha that was a lasting memory!

@ Kawayan strat, nice story, swerte mo napa sign mo pa ke Bob. (R.I.P.) Me tapes pa ako ng RP, 1st and 2nd album. Gusto kong gumawa ng fan made CD, me mga "enhanced" files kasi ako ng 2 albums. Ipon muna para makabili ng external burner hehe.
