The Ultimate Home Studio
« on: October 22, 2009, 04:16:53 PM »
Hey guys i wanna share this extremely informative video i found on youtube.

These guys talk about how they acoustically treated a home basement and turned it into a studio.
And they explain why spending more $$$ on acoustic treatments is more important than spending $$$ on lots and lots of studio gear.

also, here's another video shoot out between an Untreated room versus a treated one. Hearing is believing!!

Yeah I dreamed of a basement studio too. Just think of all the earth surrounding you, acting as a natural sound absorbent. Both for incoming and outgoing sounds.

But after Ondoy...wag na 'oy ! Hehehe.

i'd never trust basements with my gear. some of the stuff is hard as hell to hunt down and the last thing I need is the threat of a flood for something as low as a basement.

like the H**L happened to my studio... it was pepeng's fault... he flash flooded me at near knee level( 5-10 minutes lang mataas na ang tubig... ). buti nakapagtaas pa ako ng gamit. except the carpets and some floor corner bass traps... some gypsum boards sira din...

basement studio is good if your house is located somewhere on a hilltop...hek hek

lol. a basement studio is not necessarily a perfect studio. you guys totally missed the point.

The guys in the video define their studio as an ultimate home studio because it was perfectly treated acoustically.

what? perfect acoustic treatment will benefit you less ear fatigue, you will be able to hear everything accurately, you will really enjoy mixing, and many more. besides, really expensive monitor speakers will be useless if you can't hear your mix accurately because of your poorly treated room.
i'm sure lots of you guys spend thousands on studio gear (not counting mics, and pres, and a/das, etc ofcourse) but you could've spent that money on acoustic treatments.

Dude, this aint GC where the newbies make the common mistake of spending too much on gear.

I think you might be "preaching to the choir" so to speak.

look at my studio gears http://msxrecords.webs.com

you see vintage, old school stuffs, basic gears, cheap mics, DIY traps and absorbers...
my room is only 9x16 ft so i don't mix at LOUD levels. we can actually talk about something else while i'm mixing ( you by my side, or even at my back )
if im gonna treat my rear wall, mawawalan kami ng sala...

not all sound treatment were photographed or visible...

and treatment materials are just rockwool stuffs.... no big budget for fiberglass yet.

MAYBE AFTER ELECTION...

I'm sorry if i sounded like that. I really didn't mean it that way.  :-D

I think your studio is pretty cool. :-D OT... a little curious about the NS-10s. Is it true that the ns-10s have some sort of magic that if you mix with those speakers, your mix will also sound good everywhere else?

FOR ME, NS10Ms really doesn't sound good. Its FLAT ( to my ears ) so i have to boost some LFs on the room eq. +1 db on 60-120hz, ganun lang...depende nga sa acoustics... Pero kung minsan, dine-defeat ko pa rin yung room eq ko when i listen ( low volume level ) to the final mix... then after listening flat, magsu-swith naman ako ng LOUDNESS sa aking amp to hear the "near HI-FI" sound of the speakers...

But i think that's the "magic" in it - having flat response.

Well. here's mine. 3 movable baffles. Which I can take into the control room when I'm mixing. But since I don't mix at loud levels either, it's less of a consideration.

Saka on the sikanthought, having a studio in a basement is already a form of acoustic treatment although more on the "soundproofing" side. :-D.

A basement studio in Antipolo...that sounds nice. Landslide na lang ang problem :-D

i record , mix and master in a basement.. its the only room in the house where i can put ALL of my stuff - guitars, basses, keyboards, drums and recording equipment you have a problem with that?   hehehehe.. so far i just finished a blues album and a pop/folk/ballad is next on the list.. Bamf is right... about the soundproofing thing.. i can mix at 2 to 3 am in the morning without waking up the neighbors.. also you can do acoustic treatment on a basement .. (Allen you are lucky to have a 9x16 room, my room is smaller, its more like 8x14). just my two cents..
Music is art in sound...
