Quad core or Dual core???
« on: May 15, 2007, 11:37:29 AM »
Just a thought since i am thinking of getting either a Quad core or Core Duo/ Core 2 Extreme for a DAW... what do you guys think? the processors i was looking are the ff: X6800, QX6700/6800 vs the Quad Q6600.. will a E6600 or E6700 be sufficient for a DAW since it won't be used for graphics intensive work ?... also anyone here have used Vista with 8 gigs of ram to run their software and any glitch experienced?

It's not easy being on the leading edge. too easy to get cut with the technology.

I suggest going dual core first since the prices have dropped but get a mobo that's quad ready. At least you're somewhat future-proofed. Intel systems have good dual and quad core capable mobos but the quads are still expensive plus there are only a few applications that make good use of multicore threading. AMD is just releasing their quad core Phenom but these are slated for dual cpu boards for the meantime. The jury is still out on which is the better quad core and their fanboys will state that their platform is better - don't follow the bandwagon, get the platform that costs best for the performance, and is reasonably future proofed. AMD is financially shaky now, hopefully they will recover to keep competition live.

Don't rely on vista as an operating system yet. I'm reading a lot of posts in another forum complaining about lack of drivers; too many jumping on the vista wagon without making sure their existing systems can weather the change. Stay with XP for the meantime, it's mature and drivers are not a problem.

kitC thanks for the insight..yes i was thinking of getting that " future proof" mobo.. intel has one that supports duo core and quad core..i am also thinking of staying with XP since i dont want to have problems in the future.. Plug in problems right now is already a headache, i dont want to add more hehehe  :-D.. If the budget is tight.. i might downgrade to the earlier version of Nuendo and record @ 96kH/ 24 bit... i think it will still be "fine" and will still sound nice to my ears and feel good to my pocket  :-D :-D :-D
Do you think 4 gigs of memory will be enough or does win xp capable of 4 gigs? right now i got 2 gigs and its hanging bigtime with the effects/ plugins on.   :x

By default, XP addresses up to 2 gigs of memory. You can bump up to 4 gigs of ram by using the "/3GB" switch in your boot.ini, kinda something like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Pro with /3GB" /3GB

Remember that this only works with XP Pro and that of the 4 gigs, 3.2 is only addressable while the rest is used for window's overhead. XP Home is not supported.

Maganda yung 975XBXKR, Baldo, kaso I'm leaning more in the direction of solid caps boards from Asus and Gigabyte, pero the 975 chipset is proven for DAWs. I'm also checking out the P35 chipsets kasi they accept DDR3 modules kaso di pa mature nag chipset t masyadong cutting edge pa; mahirap nang masugatan, too costly. At least safe bet ka sa Intel975 chipset.

Jepoy, oks din yung Commando at Infinity pero since decidedly gaming board sila, baka may preference for video ang performance nila.

dual core - one physical processor unit containing 2 cpu cores internally. Look up AMD Athlon64 X2 3600+ Brisbane AM2 and Intel E6300 Core 2 Duo Conroe, for example.

XP SP2 po
Steinberg Cubase SX 3
Propellerhead Reason 3
and VSTsssssss
