Any digital photographers in the house?
« on: February 19, 2005, 12:37:54 PM »
Hi folks, I started this to forum to share some of my experience and knowledge in digital photography to visitors and fans of the site. I started taking photos of gigs for this site way back in 1998 with my long retired Agfa e1280. That was a loooong time ago, but digital cameras were far and in between then :-) As time went by I amassed quite a lot of photos of the local music scene and I hope these become valuable some day as a sort of historical reference. I aim to keep on shooting and shooting until they arrest me, hehehe

Nowadays photos on PhilMusic.com are usually shot with a Canon EOS 300D digital SLR.

If there are any camera nuts in the house, come join us!

Hobbyist here! Joined up because of Jim's invitation on the phphoto yahoogroups. :)
I love house music, electronica, acid jazz (such a 90's name) and "chill out" (such a broad genre) but I listen to most anything. I'm enjoying how the local music scene is coming along. I've been taking pics at Saguijo while catching the acts there, but I haven't been able to post any of my pics yet. I've seen Sound, Quail Quartet, Sun Valley Crew, Cambio, Francis M, Milagros Dancehall Collective, Drip and a few others there.
I used to go to a lot of the "raves" before in Starcity and the other warehouses, but I've started going again to the Bigfish events. I was there basically enjoying the music and taking pics. Some of my shots were used on http://www.bigfishmanila.com for the Hed Kandi and God's Kitchen gigs last 2004. I've bumped into dtan_ph a number of times too. His pics are great!
My pics can be viewed here

Hi,

I'm a photo hobbyist. My digicam is just a zoomless P&S and a keychain digicam. I don't have a DSLR. Well, I have a mini DV camcorder that can shoot stills but photo quality for me is not so good. Anyway, I have no plans of buying a DSLR yet. I'm sticking to my film cameras -- SLR, RF, P&S, and toycam. I will not invest on any DSLR until I'm convinced that they are as reliable as and will last as long as my film cameras.

Please click below links to some of my photos.

Since you're a Nikon SLR user I think you will be happy with the Nikon D70 especially since Columbia is now offering good package deals incl a standard zoom (18-70mm) and external flash (SB800).  It should be compatible with your existing lenses. You will end up using it more than you ever used your film SLRs because of no more expense (*pesos*) involved in film processing. The D70 is quite rugged and both amateurs and pros are happy with it. It's already a modern classic.

But forget about longevity - the average product cycle for a Canon SLR is about 1 year then it is phased out with a new model. For Nikon it is a little longer (2 years?)  but it will get phased out eventually as technology rolls merrily along. But in the meantime you will have gotten a lot of use out of it so it's all good.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I would really like to see a DSLR with average product life of 4 years!

You used to be a Nikon Coolpix guy. What made you choose a Canon DSLR over a Nikon or Fuji?

Well at the time Canon had the cheapest DSLR... now there's also Pentax, but I think Canon is the better buy in terms of accessories and add ons and resale value. Nikon was and still is premium priced. Why not Nikon for me? Well I think Canon has better  digital technology, they have a bigger R&D budget. But the D70 is very good, especially for shooting action shots, maybe I would have gone with that if it was available at the time :)

I came from using a Nikon F90X. I was ready toget the 300D since it was the best deal in early 2004. Then the D70 came out. So I got the D70. There are various pros and cons for both that can be endlessly debated, but it all boils down to intended use and budget. Product-wise, you can take great pics from using any of the two. The D70 is better for action shots, but Canon has the best local deals and support. Needless to say, I love my D70. It seems easier to get good quality 2nd-hand fast telezoom lenses for Nikon (80-200 2.8/AF-D), but fast primes seem to be affordable for both (50mm 1.8s). The D70 feels very solid, and lightweight at the same time. Sinve April last year, I've taken almost 12000 shots with it and its working fine. Go Digital! Now's the time! A new Rebel's out and a D70 or D100 successor is supposedly in the wings.

That's a great idea! There are 2 employees in our company who are excellent photographers. They used to be very active with Zone V (one was consistent top 10) but are now busy with other hobbies. Both of them are Nikonians. I hope they request at least one D70 for office use...

Hi there Jim. I remember seeing you @ the pinoydrums 2nd EB. Im a 24 yr old photographer and drummer too. Me and my brother Ross are the photographers for Nestle and Milo events. We have regular clients like Clarity Skin Clinic and Healthway Medical clinics.

Regarding the issue about film & digital. Its just a matter of personal Preference. Our cameras are only as good as the artiste using it. :)

Cheers shutterbugs..
