Help on Drum Lugs!
« on: October 17, 2007, 07:28:50 AM »
hi Pinoydrums forumites,

im a regular on guitar central but i need your help on my nephew's ddrum problem.

as based on this thread

http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,25381.0.html

sandythedrummer quoted, mahina nga yung lugs ng drums - i do confirm it. 1 week ago, my nephew recently bought a diablo punx kit (ala bonham) at JB. he knows how to play drums but noob yet to gears and maintenance since this is first kit. to my dismay, pagkauwi namin, biak na agad yung lock para paa ng floor tom (or whatever you termed it, di ko po kasi alam ). good thing they replaced it after returing that specific part the next day. this is the sad news, a week later, while he was tuning the snare, one of the lugs broke. same thing did happen on one of the floor tom. i think its made of cast zinc tapos manipis pa yung walls ng lugs. i presume it can't withstand the tension that's why it broke off.

reading through some of the threads here, well i really learned my lesson that hardware sturdyness should be one of the primary consideration when buying a kit. well anyway, i can't bring back the past. please take note also that the lugs presented on ddrum's website is completely different from the ones sold here.

with this, can you help out guys with this problem. your suggestions are highly appreciated. i am having a dilemma that some of the lugs will be experiencing the same thing (oh well i hope not). To add up to it (and since i really a noob), i think the lugs are not in the same size like those available at lazer, although i haven't checked it personally yet. mas maliit yung agwat ng screws ng lugs ng ddrums over dun sa available sa lazer. for me ok lang naman kahit anong matibay na lugs na magkakasya dun sa butas ng shell. the snare lugs is also different from the standard lugs. It has a different set of lugs sa taas at sa baba ng skin

here's my questions

1. where can I source locally a sturdy/hard/durable lugs that will fit the screw holes punx kit shells?
2. is there anyone here fabricating custom lugs? sa machine shop ba pwede magpa-fabricate?
3. is it okay to rebore new holes to the shells to fit the commercially available lugs? but as much as possible, i don't want to resort to this.

if this is a double post pardon me or a thread like this is already existing, can you reply back to me the thread/s pertaining to this?

HHHEEELLLPPP!!!!

Hi Sig, nice of you to drop your question here.

If possible, try to bring that floor tom along with you and fit it against the ones in JB, Lazer and Yupangco stores (perfect pitch and yamaha).

none

machine shops. they can fabricate brass lugs for you at a cost. it wont be the same as your existing lugs but brass is sturdy. i had a sample brass tube lug made 2 years ago, cost me 550 for a single lug. lesson learned: buy, dont customize

3. is it okay to rebore new holes to the shells to fit the commercially available lugs? but as much as possible, i don't want to resort to this.

this may be your only choice. get a bigger lug so the old hole will be covered

yung lug eh nabiyak mismo sa gitna. tangal din yung ala nut part ng lug. may epekto ba sa tonality ng drums kapag nagbutas ako to accomodate the new lug? just anticipating also, kapareho ng lug orientation yung snare with the toms. mas ok ba gamitin yung common na lug for both top and bottom or different set of lugs? available ba ang lugs in set o paisa-isa?

sir bitoy, sorry for being noob, machine heads at tremolo ang alam kong hardware eh, but what is iso mounting? available ba ang lugs in set o paisa-isa?

o btw, magkano ang pearl lug/s?

sirs blue / cavsdieagram, its probably zinc, which also used mostly as tremolo blocks in economy trems in guitars. ok lang naman pero manipis yung walls ng lug. kung icocompare mo, IMO, mas mukhang mas matibay pa yung lug na nabibili sa lazer. i think its not powder coat kasi natatanggal yung paint.

pasensya na if i don't use drum linggo. hindi ko talaga alam eh.

hahaha kasi malamang gawang china yung lug at gawang taiwan yung tension rod  :-D hindi kasi sila nagsasalita ng same language kaya ayun hindi magka intindihan. its either malaki yung receiver nung lug or maliit yung diameter ng tension rod. it happens. sa lazer kasi ganyan, bumili ako ng 100 pcs na china lugs, hindi magamit dahil taiwan made yung tension rods nila pero buti na lang may mga china made tension rods na rin sila. noticeable yung tension rods kasi mas makintab ang mga taiwan made kesa chinese.

may epekto ba sa tonality ng drums kapag nagbutas ako to accomodate the new lug?

wala

just anticipating also, kapareho ng lug orientation yung snare with the toms. mas ok ba gamitin yung common na lug for both top and bottom double ended lugs or different set of lugs regular single sided?

sir bitoy, sorry for being noob, machine heads at tremolo ang alam kong hardware eh, but what is iso mounting? available ba ang lugs in set o paisa-isa?

see below

iso mount or isolation mount

ginagamit para hindi naka attach yung tom holder directly sa shell, nagpapaimprove ng resonance ng drum

pearl lugs are 275 each i think

well. i'll just replace the entire 16 lugs of one floor tom and replace with sturdy ones. butasan ko nalang ng bago to fit the different lug. i'll have the rest as spares for the time being muna.

thanks sir bitoy and peeves for the help.
