Tips for budding band managers
« on: June 14, 2008, 04:15:58 PM »
search function's busted as of the moment, so if ever there's a dupe thread, mods, please merge or lock...  :-)

as of the moment i play in four bands, though not all of them are active.  two of them have just started out this year.  but since my ex, several friends and family have repeatedly told me in the past that band management may be up my alley, i'm considering managing my own bands as well as others...

kaya ginawa ko yung thread na ito to ask tips from fellow musicians or actual band managers on how to be an effective band manager, aside from having lots of contacts (w/c is the most common advice i get).  like how would one juggle his time between his actual job (in my case, call center agent) and band management?  your inputs are much appreciated!   :-D

im not a manager, pero mukhang masaya mag-manage. kaya heto mga naoobserve ko usually...

P.R lang lahat yan bro. hehehe..  :)

at eto pa.

ayan kaya enzo konting BOKA or PR pa...kaya mo yan!

maraming salamat sa mga payo!   :-D

as of now, di pa rin talaga ako ready magmanage.  walang oras bukod pa sa wala masyadong contacts/pera.  kaya kelangan lumipat na ako sa pang-umaga...para at least mas madaming oras...  :-(

if i may add to the factors mentioned above...

you would need to know your band members' personal schedules.  as a manager, it is your job to ensure that the gigs you will get will fit in ALL of the band members' schedules.  it is ideal that gigs won't affect the members' everyday activities.

another factor may be a good ear for sound and tone.  as the manager, you should know the tonal preference of each of your members whenever they play their instruments.  it is an advantage if you are a musician because you know what sounds good or not.

lastly (or maybe not..i might still add), you need to have pride in your band, and you have to make them feel that you are working for them not just for the money...but for their own development.  you should stand for them and not allow them to be pushed around during productions.

hope this helped.  :-D

I believe that the definition of definition is reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself.

Completely.
