Title: Vintage fender amps appreciation
Post by: siore on March 08, 2012, 01:38:51 AM
@ r_chino18

Let's try this.  Do the first pics!

Here's everything and anything tweed, brownface, blonde, blackface, and silverface.  Cutoff maybe at the years around the ultralinears.  Should we peg the vintage to around and before '76 - '77?  Just general talk.  Hopefully we can leave the tech info, troubleshooting and diagnosing problems out of it, so that the shy fender owners can come out of the woodwork!  But circuit discussions are also encouraged, makiramdam na lang if noses are bleeding.  All in the spirit of fun fender ownership basically!

Remember, pics are welcome!  Share the acquisition story, first impressions, first mishaps, first few gigs, etc.

Had one, 1970's dual showman, which i had to let go 4 years ago. It was my first tube amp. I sold it to fraudulentzodiac and don't know where it is now.

My first tube amp was a SF Twin Reverb.  Got frustrated with it for not breaking up at 10.  Haha!  Didn't know it really wouldn't.

Lito Bote posted 3 Silverface Fenders for sale here around 5 years ago.  Others were a Dual Showman rehoused in 2x12 combo and a Super Reverb.  My brother and I trooped to his house ASAP.  Wanted to take home the Super Reverb, too but I think it had an issue.

The amp had already been rewired when I got it.  Didn't matter though because it still sounds really good, specially after a recap with cheap Alexan eletrolytics

I replaced the grille cloth but stupid me put it in reverse side out.

Tried some speakers in it, too.  Put in an impedance switch so I can use the speakers with other amps.

^^Nice!!  So you've tried both patriots and redcoats eh? :)

Here's mine, post ko na old pics before the big boys find their way here.  Tagal ni r_chino18 eh!!

I can push the front end quite a bit on the vibrato channel on this particular amp.

Almost cried when I first got it (hyperbole). Instant tonal bliss. :-D To this day, it puts a smile on my face every time I plug in.  Always pure.  And humbling at the same time.  I dunno if you guys understand the feeling.  Sure with an old amp it has ups and downs, but thanks to the guys on here who helped me out during tough times (you know who you are!).

Here's my '74-75 Fender Dual Showman Reverb head on a Bassman shell.
2x12 cab with non-Fender 50-watt speakers. Cab is still being restored. Got it without the back cover and had a fuzzy exterior that I just had to retolex. Still lacking is a front panel with a grille cloth. to follow...  :-)
Got the head also without a back cover, made one and tolexed it as well.

Paging sir upfront...  :-)

What do you think? Should we peg it on the years I mentioned? Just going by what FDP, TFF, and other fender amp forums and webpages define them to be. Considered vintage up to the silverfaces, sagad sa ultralinear models. After that rivera era na, red knobs, evil twin, etc, markedly different and define the start of fender amps modern era; with channel switching, PCB construction, etc. As far as I know!

@kernelsalonpas

Just cheap obscure speakers.

That's a '70s solid state.  I think inigo was selling a cabinet from the same line a few years back, which got my Googling.  I saw amps like that in old Fender catalog scans.

Ah, actually I started way back last quarter of 2010 lang. Yup, surprisingly, puro local purchases lang ako. No overseas transactions (for now). Siguro ang key is I travel a lot. Meron ako mga experiences na while driving, may nakikita akong electrical shops na may Fender logo. Titigilan ko yun and makikita ko sa loob ng shops yung pile of Head amps. Di nila ginagalaw kasi wala sila idea pano gawin haha! The rest untouched.

Pero karamihan sa old musicians ko nakukuha. Nakakalibang talaga. Bukod sa tone of course  :-D I think marami pa dito.

Dunno why. Napatigil ako sa road talaga haha

Ah, actually I started way back last quarter of 2010 lang. Yup, surprisingly, puro local purchases lang ako. No overseas transactions (for now). Siguro ang key is I travel a lot. Meron ako mga experiences na while driving, may nakikita akong electrical shops na may Fender logo. Titigilan ko yun and makikita ko sa loob ng shops yung pile of Head amps. Di nila ginagalaw kasi wala sila idea pano gawin haha! The rest untouched.

Pero karamihan sa old musicians ko nakukuha. Nakakalibang talaga. Bukod sa tone of course  :-D I think marami pa dito.

Thanks siore for starting this thread. :)

Name doesn't do justice bro. I've seen some demo videos ng Blues Jr + high gain pedal and it sounds good. Actually kaya ko nagustuhan yung Wampler Plextortion kasi may nakita akong demo nun na Blues Jr ang gamit...grabe yung tone.. panalo. :)

Thanks guys! Only really digging into it now lang. I got it a few days ago tapos I just checked it lang at home tas deretso na sa gig (just a solo type thing, not with the band).

I'm reading about a 3 prong mod.. How does one go about that? Do you guys use a step-down transformer for your 110 amps?

You replace the two prong cord with one with three, and have the third prong ground to chassis, but it's only beneficial if your home wiring is properly grounded (the third round prong if inserted will actually goes to earth).  Otherwise, just disconnect the death cap (0.047 from the fuse side accdg. to BF vibro champ schem), and maybe replace the power switch with a DPDT that lifts both AC and GND lines.  Suggest you talk this over with Mang Raul or whoever's your tech.

@ Teleclem and Siore:

I'm out of the country mga bro and the princeton reverb is with me.

I've never seen another one in Philmusic since I joined PM a few years ago. Bart has a Li'l King Reverb which is a very nice boutique clone of the princeton reverb.

You have probably seen this amp when this was advertised for sale here. It went to vegetablejoe for a time and then it was again sold by deltaslim for the second time and that is when I got it.

It is working pretty well but the physical condition is poor. I cleaned it up a bit, put in a new Accutronics reverb tank kasi yung nakalagay mahina ang reverb, hindi yata exact replacement model. The reverb is working fine now. I also replaced the knobs and chassis straps with new original replacements.

I plan to restore this to original schematic and try to see if that is preferable over the PaulC mod done to it when owned by deltaslim.

I've got a very clean early 70s original cabinet for it (now in Manila). I also got an original fender output transformer to replace the non-original one on it now.

This is costing me more than it would to buy a similar model on Ebay but it is still worth it for me. It is satisfying to restore a vintage amp.

I like the Youtube demos of the Valco Spectator. IIRC si Filippo yata or si Musicjunkie meron nyan.

May offers nga for my Jester Oahu :) but I'm keeping this one as long as I can afford to keep it. These circuits are as basic as can be and dahil yata dyan kaya mas raw ang tone.

These are deltaslim's pics (I hope he won't mind :)):

@sd8450 that's looking to be lots of fun. It's nice to see someone dedicate time and effort to go for original parts and restore to the best they can the way you're doing right now. Most of the time people (guilty here) are just practical, cost-conscious, function-centric and all that. It takes some serious love for what you do, and I'm always inspired how these restorations turn out! Yes sir I actually saw that at the classifieds some years ago. The PaulC mods seems to be sound in what it aims to do, but I'm all for stock too, so I'm curious with your eventual comparison. The cab looks real nice for an original, ang linis pa ng tolex and grillcloth!

The valco I got to try I believe is from musicjunkie. It got handed down already to a new owner, and I think aside from pots that needed cleaning, it came from good hands. Sounded real nice, and you're right there's a certain rawness to it. Told him also to keep it as long as he can. But I digress..

Hope you check in from time to time with updates on that PR!

When's my amp made? (http://www.superchamp.dk/papers/dating_fender_tube_amps.htm)

How fender amps work (layman's terms) (http://fenderguru.com/how-fender-amps-work)

Perhaps we can compile a list of cool links like these for new "old amp" owners out there?  Without being too technical, of course.  (I have a few tech pages I rely on, but I opted not to include them) Just PM me to discuss a few, include natin sa first post.  ^-^

I was finally able to play my newly acquired '64/'65 princeton reverb a few days ago. It works 100% and sounds very nice and is quiet when there is no input signal. The only thing I needed to do was put a little contact cleaner to the reverb pot which was scratchy and the pot is now working normally.

I took some gut pictures while the chassis was out of the cabinet. The inside electronics are all original and untouched and very clean as can be seen in the pictures below. The reverb pan is also original and very clean and is functioning very well:

I removed the 'death cap' to make the amp safer to use. The only other thing I am thinking to do is to change the 2-wire power cord to a 3-wire power cord, again for the sake of safety. This would only work if the power source outlet is also provided with a ground connection.

Thanks bro! :)

I read somewhere na nickel-plated yung mga chassis ng Fender amps during the early years before they switched to zinc-plated chassis. The amp was obviously kept in a relatively dry area and the nickel plating helped preserve the amp through the years.

Join the club na rin ako!

'64 Bandmaster
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/inigomortel/Guitar%20stuff/P1090195.jpg)

Year referenced by the serial, according to this site: http://www.superchamp.dk/papers/dating_fender_tube_amps.htm

There has been replacements in its caps and probably one of the transformers (I don't know where else). The grill cloth had also been painted black by a previous owner.

I just got it this Sunday from Marco Harder, and I only got to play with it a few hours yesterday. I connected it to a refurbished old Jensen P12N (no cab!) that I got from Larry Yasona, and I got glued playing with it using my CIJ Tele. It's warm, chimey, and feels great to play on.

I thought I need to change the electrolytic caps due to the age of the amp. They are however in excellent physical condition with no signs of any damage so I decided against replacing them.

I also checked the voltages against the schematic to have some reassurance and got readings very close to the expected levels.

The old caps are physically much bigger than the equivalent modern ones. I realized/rationalized that the old big caps has greater tolerances than the equivalent small modern caps. The old caps has been working well so far so I am betting on them lasting for quite a long time.

Hi Nathan, di naman sa hindi trip, sa case ko it's more on the supply concerns, since locally sourced lahat ng amps ko for now.

pagsubok pag naka score ka. i've always liked the tweeds and ac30 tones more than black face face tones. amps that break up easy.

kaya lang parang mas popular dito amps with superhuman head room. siguro kasi mas stompbox setup friendly.

Tama. Sige pag meron haha. Meron ako blackfaces/silverfaces na may early break ups like vibrolux, deluxe reverb, super reverb, pro reverb, bassman. Pwede mo sila try anytime. Pero baka ibang tone talaga hanap mo. AC30 gusto ko magkaroon. Yup mas madami dito ang hi wattage vintage amps kasi yun ang requirement ng mga pinoy musicians from the 60's and 70's. Or yun ang dumadating sa kanila. Ngayon uso na ang small club venues (or bedroom playing) so popular naman low wattage. Evolution. Malay natin next generation would require hi wattage na naman. Hahaha!

Awesome!

I am out of the country presently bro and the amp is with me, pinagtyagaan ko bitbitin. It is almost unbelievable that it is still working 100% considering the electronic components, especially the electrolytic capacitors were made in 1964.

I will post a pic one of these days with my other gear.

Pareho ang circuit ng PRRI so I think they will sound very similar. Possible difference na lang siguro would be due to speaker dahil 12" ang speaker nito when I got it. Hopefully makakita ako ng Jensen C10Q na around '64 or '65 na hindi masyadong mahal para masubukan sa 10" speaker.

Congrats on your PRRI! :)

pagdating sa amp i tend to prefer new ones e. di kasi tulad ng gitara na may "aging" ekek to consider that does sometimes make it sound better. sa amps, age seems to do nothing but deteriorate components na pwede mo din naman palitan ng bago. narereplicate yung old circuits provided the components are still available. plus mas mahirap magpaayos ng amp locally.

but i am fascinated by gear na may history.

Oo nga ano?  Although that may be the reason why a particular vintage piece can sound different from others of the same model, same tubes, & same speakers.  Or why the old fenders sound nothing like the RI's.  Those leaky caps, the drift in resistor values, old magnets... those are deteriorations that can be good or bad.  Only the user knows.

I got a Fender Blues Deluxe (Original not the re-issue) from a garage sale... nasira talaga yung box at skin... naka-stock lang kasi ito sinc e nung nabili nung 90's pa... at naulanan pero di naman nagamit kaya di nasira...

I got Mang Raul checked it and he was amazed na great condition pa yung loob (maliban nga lang sa mga rusted parts ng chasis) at never pa daw itong nabuksan... He cleaned it and the sound now is really amazing...

that might be more kasi may difference sa circuitry talaga. or components used. i dont think fender uses the same OTs they used in the 50s and 60s. the Jensen you know today isn't the made the by same Jensen that made them in the 50s and 60s.

may definite differences that is a lot easier to track down than guitar snake oil mojo. that's why well made modern replicas (whether exact or with improvements) cost almost as much as vintage pieces.

upfront's high powered amps though make me daydream sometimes about who played them at which legendary gig.

Easy to replace, yes. Maraming aftermarket reverb tanks. Make sure lang na tama yung part number ng oorderin mo with respect sa original para parehas din ang makukuha mo.

Easy to fix mejo.

Order abroad, as far as I know. I'm not sure if they're available locally.

Twin Reverb with a busted reverb tank? Make sure it's the tank, it would be an easy fix (or replacement). Its reverb tank is tube driven. If I remember correctly from my DSR, two tubes power the reverb section of the amp. If the problem is with that section, then you're in for some repair on that part or probably tube replacement.

None so far, but you might get lucky if someone sells a good working tank.  In absence of this, I got mine from tubesandmore some years ago.  Accutronics is the original fender reverb tank manufacturer, so far ok naman yung repros for me.

some prefer MOD over accutronics. if i remember correctly, accutronics is now korean owned and made. maaaring mali alaala ko but, do some research as its on the net anyway. for those who prefer MOD, they say that the reverb produced by MOD, compared to accutronics has more depth and is similar to the reverb from the old days.

Yep. Based on some readings, Accutronics is now Korean made, after Benton(?) or Belton (can't remember exactly) bought Accutronics. Thus people saying that while Accutronics is still an American brand, it is not anymore American made.

Good stuff. I heard that too. Might check out a MOD reverb sometime. If their speakers are any indication, the reverb tanks should be good.  The accutronics 4AB3C1C sound lush enough for me though, and have lasted for some years now. yMMv.

Well then... I wonder how a type 9 fares against a type 4 reverb tank? Might be my next obsession. So far as I've read, comparisons seem to be that of a closer approximation of 'room or hall' VS springy vintage surfy signature reverb. 3 springs vs 2 springs, who has tried both?

Interesting. Never really fussed over reverb tank types. I just knew them to be long and short reverb times hahaha.

Anyway am considering rehousing my Dual Showman into a 4x10 cab (Chino we have to talk again  hehhee) so I can effectively have a 100w Super Reverb. Hehehe
