Alex Van Halen Snare Sound
« on: December 18, 2007, 09:59:10 AM »
Does anyone know how to tune the snare to get his sound? Alex Van Halen has a pretty recognizable snare sound. I've got a 7x14 snare so I'm guessing that depth ain't a problem.

If I am not mistaken AVH wanted to emulate Bonzo in the early yeats, but their producer at the time, Ted Templeman said that's impossible because Bonzo sounds like Bonzo through any kit.

First things first:  are you after a LIVE sound, UNMIKED?  If that is the case, then go see Alex Van Halen's kit and try it in person.  :-D  Then copy his setup.

But if you are after emulating a STUDIO RECORDING drum sound, USING A LIVE SETUP, that is another problem.  As an example, I had no idea how to get that Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Give It Away" snare sound in a live setting, because it turned out that Chad Smith was using a heavily-gated miked up piccolo snare with tons of reverb.

Now, if you are talking about getting the same STUDIO-RECORDED/PRODUCED SOUND using your proposed kit and mics, I guess one way to arrive at that is make the reso head a little looser than the top head.  Use a doughnut, and maybe a center dot would help.  Wood snare I suppose, no shallower than 6.5".

Yup I hear the similarity between Bonzo's and Alex's snare sound but they still sound different. Thanks for the tip bro. Pretty sure that it'll definitely sound different mic'ed but the thing I like about it is his consistency album after album  :-D
