Phil, can you give me your review on the Vai Jem? I was thinking of getting one - and I would love to if I could find one - but I want to know what to expect when I play it. How is the tone? The action? The neck? How does it project when you play? I am mainly looking for an introspective review about what you like about the guitar and what makes it a good guitar for lead oriented music.

thats my $149 Ibanez Gio....

from this one....

then.....

to this...

the pink pick up is a Dimarzio Paf Pro (neck pickup)
bridge is a FRED
tuners are Grovers locking tuners
the tone knob is now a mid boost preamp...or on board wah.

my $149 Gio sounds like a $900 RG  hehehehe. I've been using it in some of my songs too.

abyss...I don't have the REAL JEM...thats the poor man's JEM the JEM555 made in Korea. ..it's decent. I won't ever buy a guitar over a grand....just a hobby bro.

one thing I first look for in a guitar is playability.....neck. I won't enjoy the guitar if I can't play it....duh. The prestige neck is far the fastest neck ever.....then the tremolo....edge pro is awesome....no matter how hard you yank that MF it doesn't go out of tune. 8)

Sir Phil, tell me more about the tone knob of your Gio. What does it do exactly, and why did you change it to that instead of having a regular tone knob?

Thanks.

Reasons:
I only need a volume knob for this guitar.
It's a fun gizmo...you can do legatos and just wah away.

true - the Ibanez necks are FAST. I played a chrome boy from a store a couple of weeks ago and I was amazed just how comfortable it was; much flatter than my ESP Ganesa which is the only guitar I've got with a Floyd. I became interested in the Ibanez JEM and Js series after trying one out a while back, since then the curiosity has just gone up. I am mainly looking for a bit of tonal variety in my production work and none of my guitars quite have that Vai and Satch sound. I will try the JEM555 if I can find one and see how it works out. Thanks very much for your insight!
