Loot from Egypt and Turkey!
« on: November 04, 2009, 09:16:25 AM »
Got back a few weeks ago from a vacation with kumander.. The Darbukas were a bit bulky, but i stuffed my clothes in them so they'd fit in my maleta... The sultans fit in my GF's suitcase. I was praying the whole time for them not to dent or warp. The music street in Istanbul is a great and fascinating place to see instruments and shopowners who really love their craft and music.

Sorry :-D heres the link (public, according to facebook)

Maraming istanbul agop, and a lot of stores specialize in cymbals exclusively. Yung binilhan ko ng hats, it was a store run by Drum Club (http://www.drumclub.net/). Iba talaga ang commerce pag ang kaharap mo, bihasa sa field ng kung ano man yung product. The two owners/sales staff/drum geeks were so helpful and informative. Nilecture-an din ako tungkol sa history ni Zilcan and his apprentice Mehmet. It was a good experience. Di lang masyado maka pamakyaw kasi wala nang allowance for excess baggage at wala na ring pera :-(

Thanks for doing the links sjon014!!!
yahx: The Sultans have a hybrid finish supposedly to reduce overtone and dry up the sound via the unlathed areas..

Price? 160. Ang problema lang, di ko na maalala kung USD, Turkish Lira, or Euro yun.. kasi may hawak pa akong Egyptian pounds non at Dirham. Anyway, Any drummer or any musician visiting Istanbul really should pay this area a visit. Iba talaga yung atmosphere. At yung mga tao ayos kausap. After i paid kung anu-ano pang catalog at sticker ang pinabaon sa akin. Peace.

that darbuka on on the left is sweet...

the other one with black ang white checkers, may ganyan yung friend ko na galing din egypt...hindi maganda amoy...hehe...pero nakakaadik din minsan...and if you're looking for darbuka crispness mejo hindi uubra yan...hindi ko alam kung ganun din yang sayo, pero yung sakanya maluwang yung skin at hindi nalalock/tighten...so bass-y ang tunog nya...parang ganyan daw kasi yung mga "souvenir products"...

we are planning to put another skin and some stringing pero wala pang time at hindi namin matimingan yung kadangyan people....

share lang...

So true about the smell!! Laway yata ng camel pinang inlay dyan eh.. Anyway, tuning it is easy! all you need is heat. Just put the drum pwet side down some inches away from a lit stove.. keep touching the skin as the hot air rises inside the drum. Dapat medyo kaya pa ng kamay mo yung init. The more heat you apply, the higher the pitch will be after it cools down. Ingat lang kasi thats animal skin, baka pag masyado mainitan maging chicharon.

yup...that's what we're doing also pero hindi naman mapapalabas yung crispness ng darbuka bom bom parin yung tunog...minsan tuloy tinatamad kaming magdala...plus the smell...
nasa percussion thread yung pic nung sinasabi ko...
