Fine Steel Wool: a must have in your guitar tool box
« on: May 27, 2015, 04:22:54 PM »
I did a thread before about contact cleaner as a must have...now eto naman ang isa pang MUST HAVE sa utility box nyo...

FINE STEEL WOOL

So I got a pack of fine steel wool from Daiso..for around 70 pesos.. it had 20 rolls I think..and decided to polish the frets of an old bass..and WOW! sobrang bilis matangal ng dirt and grime! even the stains sa body, and sa hardware.. tangal agad! love this thing!

tip lang.. wear a mask, and do it outdoors..kasi sobrang kalat niya dahil sa steelwool residue..

Just sharing folks!

Just keep it away from those square 9 volts battery.

http://weirdsciencekids.com/Firebatterysteelwool.html

In this experiment we will make fire from batteries and steel wool. We will demonstrate how
to use electricity to make heat and sparks. Then harness the sparks to create a fire. The
project is easy and definitely fun to see. A regular 9 volt battery and extra fine steel wool are
all we need for this experiment. We will also learn about fire safety and the "Fire Triangle".

Materials:
- Thin / Very Fine Steel Wool - 0000 Works Best (Home Depot or Lowe's).
- 9 volt battery
- Baking pan

Process Fire From Battery and Steel Wool Experiment:
1) With adult supervision, pull the steel wool pad apart until it's the size of a tennis ball.

2) Then stretch the pad into thin strips that all inter-connect.

3) Place the steel wool in the baking pan.

4) Turn off the lights.

5) Touch the ends of the battery to the steel wool.

I am aware that the fingerboard has to be protected before using 0000 steel wool but since I haven't been able to use this much talked about and sought tool, mind telling me how strong (or weak) its scratch factor is? Di ba madaling makagasgas?

TIA!  :)

I cut 2 strips of electrical tape.. one on each side of the fret.. and scrub away...tapos lipat lipat lang hanggang umabot sa dulo..

medyo nakakagasgas.. but not so obivious..

I even removed the rust sa pickguard screws..

rust mortal enemy..galing!

Didikit. Kaya it's best to cover the pickups with masking tape when brushing the fretwires with steel wool.

And it's better to use a Super Fine Grade #0000 steel wool for fret wires so it doesn't scratch the actual fret wire.

It can scratch the finger board. Best to protect it with masking tape. I use just two strips of masking tape placed beside the fret. Okay din steel wool for removing dirt and gunk from the fretboard. Just sand along the grains.

Am at Daiso Market Market. Wala!

Naka score kami before sa ACE hardware Festival Mall. That was 2 or 3 years ago.

Slightly OT:
Ano pa ba ang uses ng 0000 steel wool? Reason I ask is that when I was asking last night sa Daison and even sa Japan Home Depot, parang wala silang idea kung ano ang steel wool. Someone  has t remember first that it is something used for cleaning pots and pans but it takes them some time before they even remember. I had to manually search both stores dahil baka di lang talaga nila alam kung ano yung item.  <_<

#0000 steel wool is frequently used for sanding wood and wet sanding/polishing finishes  :)

Or cover the pickups with masking tape while doing the polishing!

Gahh, where to find 0000 steel wool in PHL. :(
I'd rather be sharp than flat.

If you are concerned about fine metal particles left behind by the steel wool use synthetic steel wool. Like this one: 3M Synthetic Steel Wool Super Fine/0000. It works just the same if not better.

Nakow, Pareng Sam! Hahaha!

I would prefer scotch brite over this

You can use the sponge part as handle. Straight surface pa siya. At hind siya mamamagnet sa pickups.

Same lang ba sila ng "roughness" or "grit" ng steel wool?

I used to have a pack months ago, pero naubos na. Also bought it from one of those Japan home stores. I think tsambahan ang stocks. Minsan may nakikita ako, minsan wala. Huli kong punta sa Japan Home (or yung Daiso yata yun sa ground floor) sa Rob Ermita parang meron yata. Aside from frets, I also used it as "scratch" pad for my soldering iron, alongside nung wet sponge.

scotch brite is more abrasive compared to steel wool. you can only see the effect on heavily rusted metallic parts. yung mga nilinis ko using steel wool +coke/wd40, na retain mostly yung silver color. the ones where i used scotch brite or other materials, natanggal yung rust pero nangitim yung metallic part.
doh!!!
