THD flexi-50 head with 2 x 12 cab and attenuator. Very versatile amp. Single coils sound like they should and so do humbuckers. It takes pedals very well(though I haven't used my ODs since this got in).
My fave characteristic of this amp is how dynamic it is. You can clean it up with a volume knob or by how hard you hit the strings. You can also use different tubes in different combinations as all THD amps have that kind of feature. I prefer to bias this hotter(32ma vs the recommended 25ma in 50W mode) for more gain though.

Is there a difference in sound when using one? How does it sound compared to a cranked amp?

Which one do you have?

I like(d) mine -- a Dr Z Airbrake.  It served its purpose since there's no way I could've blasted away late at night.

Sir mark, attenuators tend to make the sound compressed and dynamics are reduced. But it depends on where you set it. THD has a 5 settings from -4db, -8db, -12db, -16db, and load(used for line-out applications so the transformer of the amp will not get strained if you will run it without speakers) For me -4db and -8db is still dynamic while in the -12db and -16db you could hear and feel the compression already. Honestly, in my set-up i try to avoid using the attenuator as much as possible(mga 10pm onwards lang kasi baka mareport nako s pulis ng kapitbahay, hehe) and i use the master volume control instead. I find that the master volume will also introduce compression but in a nicer way than the attenuator. THD's MV is also one of the best MV's i tried as it only alters the sound of the non-MV sound very slightly compared to others na nassquash at nagiging muddy yung sound.

you can only hear the BIG difference when you are attenuating it really low.....like if you have a 100watt or 50watt amp and you attenutate it -12Db....its going to sound to bassy and colors the tone a lot. For me power scaling is soooo much better than attenuators....attenuators sucks tone. The higher you attenuate the different it sounds.....it's either it gets too bassy or too bright.

THD Hotplate...tried  a Webber Mass too.

I bet your amp sounds differently without your attenuator with the volume set at 5 than same volume at amp then attenuated -8DB or more...you have to compensate with your EQ......which doesn't sound what the amp is suppose to sound.... I'm selling mine. Just doesn't do justice to an amp if you are going to attenuate the hell out of it.....for me the lowest would me -6Db.

...thank God for preamp volume with  master volume equipped amps.

But wait!!! PRSMAN why are you using one with your ODS amp....it has the preamp volume and a master volume...no need to attenuate.

I play my ODS amp even late night and get really really nice tones.

Phil -- I used it with my FTR37 that didn't have a master volume.  You're right, if you go really low (the Airbrake has a "bedroom level" control), it turns out really bad.  When I sold the FTR37, I sold the Airbrake as well.

Fred was actually recommending that I use a Variac instead of an attenuator.
