Learning Languages
« on: January 09, 2012, 03:22:17 AM »
So what language/s are you learning lately and why?
What are the materials/approach that you are using and how good are they so far?

***

I'm currently doing Hebrew for fun (and to give some flair to my religious curiosity). I do plan on visiting Israel and maybe even study there someday if I have the opportunity.

I'm using the Pimsleur approach. I was able to download (hehe) the material and so far so good. The approach focuses on oral communication. This is somewhat based on our experience in learning our native tongue (we learn to speak it first before reading and writing it). I recommend it heartily. It's a good approach for beginners in learning a language.

I have pimsleurs japanese. Divided into basics, intermediate, and advanced iirc. Can't tell you how many times I've gone over the 30 lessons in basic and a few in intermediate. I lose interest after a bit,and forget the entire thing! Then i have to give it a listen again. I know,I fail.. But methinks one needs a speaking partner or someone to keep talking to in the language he wants to learn. To keep engaged in the lessons. Otherwise.. Spinning the wheels imo.

true, kailangan talaga may makakausap ko or else walang kwenta, I also did a round of that pimsleurs japanese and altho I can still speak it right I dont know if I will be able to comprehend immediately once I talk to a nihonjinn.. I have someone to talk to in nihonggo way back, my bro's GF is half nihonjinn kaso mahiyain kaya wala din hehehe

I also studied french way back college and nahirapan ako kasi nga you need to hear it and speak it in a conversation style, I also tried a little italian since my aunt's husband is an italian pero naconscious naman ako sa rising and falling intonations nila and hand gestures hahah..

espanyol I havent given enough attention tho my lolo tried to teach me, sayang nga since mas madali natin matutunan yun having some words directly inherited from it..

today ill start a summit in our office regarding arabic enablement on software user interfaces, I dunno if they'l going to teach basic arabic pero im still curious about it.. it will be for 2 weeks so kung magturo sila baka matuto ako kahit konti..

but if there is 2 language I plan to pursue it will be espanyol and nihonggo given that I have both blood running in my veins.  :-D

learned a lot of mandarin nung hs ako dahil sa kakapanood ng star mandarin hehehe. pero i learned by listening so i didnt know the proper way of saying them. pero oo nakakaintindi ako ng konti. ngayon naka limutan ko na halos lahat.

i have pimsleurs spanish, italian and french. may unfinished download ako ng japanese. i have lots of books to read sa bahay kaya di muna ako nagfocus sa mga ito.

I'm learning Finnish.

So far this is the only word I can confidently say to any Finnish citizen when I go to Finland:

"Kiitos"

= "Thanks or Thank you"

"Hei"

= "Hello"

I have quite a number of books, videos, and apps that helps me learn the language but don't have time to master them because of other commitments.

I am the dark side of you

Medyo mahal. Haven't tried any though.

A year ago, I was at an Italian class taught by a visiting professor from Italy. Good stuff. I'm at a Deutsch class now though! Haha

Learning Spanish, Italian and french since 2002 but stopped for 3 years but now self studying again.

Talking Italian to my Italian client and Spanish to my friend from Mexico.  I speak slow

and still taking some time to understand what they say though.

   French has no difference

from learning any other languages. Same with the 2 said above and we all know that, it is the accent

   Sì?

   parlare in italiano

   hablar en español

   parler en français

   makipag-usap sa Filipino

Hopefully Korean too since my mother lived in Korea for 10 lonnngggg years.

It would be a free lesson with the accent  harhar  :-D

Mandarin, more than 5 years din akong nagwork sa China so natuto kahit papaano pero medyo limot na din kasi di naman nagagamit dito. Umuwi ako 2008 so 4 years ko na din syang hindi nagagamit.
