An Invitation From John Petrucci
Prepare for a twice in a lifetime event! This is John Petrucci welcoming everyone to my second guitar universe camp. We had a great time at the first event last August. It was a such a blast that we’re returning to the Glen Cove Mansion on the Gold Coast of beautiful Long Island from August 6-10, 2018.
We’ll be back in the heart of Dream Theater country. Just down the road from the mansion is Cove City Sound Studios, where we recorded four albums, including our ambitious latest album, the epic rock opera, ‘The Astonishing.’ But there is no need to leave the mansion. This time out we’ll have a mobile recording site where we’re staying. So we’ll have more time to devote to the number of edifying workshops, which are for players ranging from beginner to intermediate to advanced.
There will be a number of amazing instructors. You will learn a great deal and leave camp a better guitarist than when you arrived. All campers will have the opportunity to learn from each of the instructors. We’re going to cover all of the bases. The lessons will cover technique, music theory and how to get a sound.
We’re also going to delve into gear. What gear works for you and what will help produce the sound you’re looking for. We’ll go over modal improvisation, how to come up with a riff and we’ll focus on melodies. But it will be more than workshops. Campers will jam and they will witness some special concerts every night.
One of my biggest guitar heroes, Al Di Meola, will perform. I will get up and play with my solo band. The other guest instructors, Tosin Abasi, Andy James, Tony MacAlpine, Rusty Cooley, Jason Richardson, and Jon Finn will perform concerts as well. You’ll be witnessing performances you can’t see anywhere else. It’ll be fun.
The goal at this camp is when you step in the door, you’re on the path to gaining more knowledge. You’re going to leave having learned how to get the guitar sound you’re after, you’ll learn about recording and you’ll learn a lot more since what I’m offering is a broad range of teachers, who all play at a high level.
Each of the instructors knows how to teach guitar, myself included. As a Berklee, alumni I know about music theory and how to convey insight about playing the guitar. Dream Theater drummer Mike Mangini, who used to be a faculty member at the Berklee College of Music, will discuss percussion. Twice every day, we gather in one big room for my masterclass, which is one of my favorite parts of the camp, since we focus on some of the more fascinating aspects of playing the guitar.
