Ayos.. Napakinggan ko na rin ung iba sa nabanggit ni indie boy at Sir Prank.. Mostly from recommendations by Spin/Rollingstone/metacritic/pitchfork. heheh..

Ung mga stable din sa 4AD records..ok din. Pero ang mahuhusay ngayon at nabibigyan ng pansin eh yung sa Canadian indie scene...

Oh btw, I'm listening to some of the songs of THE FIELD..

if i was to be anal retentive, i'd associate belle and sebastian, camera obscura and club 8 as being more indie pop than indie rock. :D

seriously, there are tons of great indie rock artists around. too many to mention. :D but for me, these are some of my all-time faves:

- bloc party (earlier stuff)
- dig
- flaming lips
- superchunk
- sebadoh
- pixies
- teenage fanclub
- saloon

LOL at the sarcasm.. :-D reminds me of that movie, Little Ms. Sunshine

Seriously, this could be a good start for healthy discussions. Anything is very much welcomed, including the diss, the piss, even sharing quality mp3 sites. just kidding. (the mod might kick me out from here)

Indie_boy: I agree, indie rock is more likely a movement than a "defined" style. No matter how soft or sad bastard the lyrics are, or overly avante garde and prickly loud the distortions are - Indie Rock Music is all about character..to veer away from the status quo...to go D.I.Y style. That's how affirmative it is, and not just sounds and weird sonics.

hehe pwede rin.. going back to the topic, i think u'll have a better understanding of the indie genre if u have new wave influences.. basically kasi sa mga brit bands from C-86 compilations sya nag start.. kasama na rin mga post punk bands dyan.. almost all of them are from U.K.. elemetary pa lang kasi ako nang mamulat ako sa ganito.. I was heavily influenced by my 'chong' brothers.. frustrated musicians kasi sila  :-D

I ordered the new New Pornographers album, Challengers, the other week.  The special edition limited issue will have a few demos and b-sides for download.  It's a four-CD set all in all.

My fave indie bands lately:
Spoon (new album to drop tomorrow!)
Blonde Redhead
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
White Stripes
Eux Atres
Mommy and Daddy
The High Violets
Viva Voce
The Shins

Anyway, if you're interested in all that stuff, I post mini reviews, concert dates, mp3's, and the occasional film/book/vacation review on my blog:

Cheers!

honestly i still dont get it. Coz by definition indie is independent meaning no record contract.

yup that's included masyado kasing broad eh.. pls, read out..

Indie and genres:

The word "indie" is often used to refer specifically to various genres or sounds in a realm of music that runs parallel to more commercial music. During the 1980s, "indie" was synonymous in Great Britain with jangly guitar pop of the C-86 movement. During the 1990s "indie" music became more expansive and established as a growing number of musicians and fans began seeking alternatives to the mainstream music establishment. Entire genres and sub-genres found representation from new acts, like the Red House Painters, The Sea and Cake, Metric and Polvo. More recently, the word "indie" is sometimes used as a synonym for all "underground" music, similar in the way alternative was used previously before it actually became just a specific genre of corporate, mainstream music in the 90's. Such usages of "indie" may be considered inaccurate for various reasons: for one, stylistic qualities are often not accurately correlated to commercial independence or adherence to indie principles (this is particularly true when a sound becomes popular, its leading exponents are signed by major labels and more success-oriented bands and production teams attempt to imitate the style; this ultimately culminates in commercially driven artists sporting the same stylistic traits the "indie" artists of a year ago had). Secondly, however pervasive any style of music may become at a particular time, it by definition cannot embody all of indie music, as, by indie's nature, there will be indie artists, labels and entire local scenes operating outside of this style and its definitions.

"Indie" by definition has transcended the original term independent.  It's not so the case anymore.  It's more semantic than functional.

The way one can tell a band is indie is really by looking at how they've paid their dues.  They've played their local hip hangouts for ages and followed the DIY aesthetic of punk by putting together their own records and shows and sometimes even doing the promotion themselves through pirate radio and the internet.  Out of all that work, they've cultivated a following in their respective local areas.  Internet venues such as Myspace have only helped to serve as a network to branch out to other places these bands haven't played yet.  Once they've managed to garner a following, they then get signed to a secondary-tier label such as Matador or Sub Pop.  After toiling for about a while under those labels, releasing at least one record, they then get signed to one of the majors (Universal, Atlantic, etc) to handle the band's ever-growing complexity in scope, artistically and commercially.

A great example of an indie band done good through the years would be The Flaming Lips.

Their last album, The Life Pursuit was a bit of a grower since it sounds so different from their previous efforts which were more minimalist (at least to me).

If you like Belle & Sebastian, you may also want to try Math & Physics Club, Camera Obscura, and (homegrown in Manila) Apple Orchard.

I attended the Capitol Hill Block Party a couple of weeks ago.  It's an annual music festival that showcases some of the best indie rock and hip hop today.  It originally showcased only local acts, but has slowly included national touring bands as well.  This year, the ones I really enjoyed were performances by Viva Voce, Spoon, and Against Me!

Here are some photos:

Anita Robinson of Viva Voce

Against Me! on the main stage

Britt Daniels of Spoon

The next set of shows on my agenda will be at the Bumbershoot Music Festival which will include Viva Voce (again), The Aggrolites, Stars of Track and Field, The Shins, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Kings Of Leon, The Apples In Stereo, and many more.  Then about a few days after, it'll again be time to see Canada's own The New Pornographers.
