My first brush with the blues was Jeff Beck's 'Wired' album..

I admit that I'm not really too fond of the Hendrix, Clapton, or BB King styles, but there's something about Beck's playing that sets him apart from his peers ..

His solo on 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' is my textbook case of a classic blues solo - in terms of tone and phrasing. It's amazing how he builds up from whisper-soft levels and cranks it up to that searing, distorted tone .. To this day, that song still sends chills up my spine

I haven't seen any of his videos before, so you can just imagine how ecstatic I was upon finding all those rare, historic clips at youtube.com
Beck is best heard AND seen! It's amazing to see him playing with just his fingers - thumbing his notes, 'heeling' the bridge to get that trademark flutter ..

Unfortunately, I don't quite dig his newer albums' 'techno' touch. I still prefer to hear him in the traditional four or five piece band setting.

I read a story long ago behind the recording of Jeff Beck's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" guitar solo. The solo section was simplified because Beck couldn't play through the original chord changes.

You just named them all actually................. Clapton, hendrix, vaughn, page................... They started it all so they have all our respect and all................. But there are some new artist nowadays that are really, really good & highly innovative when it comes to playing blues................ And take note, most of them are not black americans.................. Hispanic and White americans too............... Try googling some of these names: Leon Chalnick, Rory Gallargher, Peppe Iorio, etc............... Promise you they are cool.......... 8)

Everyone's mentioned the guitar gods and heroes, but there were/are a lot of other great blues guitarists to listent o and learn from... Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Rick Derringer, Harvey Mandel, Dave Mason, Mick Abrahams... and today's Kid Ramos, Jimmy Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, and the fat guy who plays guitar for John Mayall (sorry I forgot his name...)

Oooh, dave mason! traffic ;) he's aweson too! does stephen stills count? his playing on CS&N (and sometimes Y) stuff like "Black Queen" was very earthy blues. "Wooden Ships" when I first heard that song, was my first taste in haunting tone. to see a live vid of him play it with his firebird, you can see him roll the tone knob down to get that fat, jazz-blues overdriven sound. and the licks are killer! special mention: his solo album "Long Time Coming". title track features hendrix funking out and soloing, and another track with EC. star studded cast!

isn't Harvey Mandel the guys who claims to have came up with right hand on fretboard tapping?

Eric Clapton - who hopefully will be here in September which would  be my 2nd time since I saw him in Manila in 81 (if I remember right)
Duane Allman/Dickie Betts of the Allman Bros. - Dickie Betts is playing here at the Ottawa Blues Festival this July. I also saw the Allman Bros with Dickie Betts and Warren Haynes a few years ago.
Johnny Winter - Saw him 3 months ago, it's so sad to see him in his present state, needs to be helped when walking and sat down all the time. He still is good albeit a bit slower with his fingers now and prone to committing mistakes. One night he's good other nights he sucked.
B.B. King Who I saw back in 94, sits down playing now.
Buddy Guy I also saw him in 95
Robert Johnson I'd be worried if I see him.

There are others but these are the ones that come to mind.

Yup, I'll make you a copy of early Bloomfield, via the first two Butterfield albums and the Super Session album...

Deacon Blues (or should it be Deacon Jazz?) can better describe the Bloomfield style to you. He's heard the above albums na. IIRC, he was disappointed...

i can see why deacon blues/jazz would be disappointed w/ bloomfield. altho big fan ako, IMO magulo si bloomfield e, parang chopsuey of guitar styles. that's because he is really a chameleon. if you can hear him focus on a certain style and work within it, galeng!  still tho, lumalabas yung pagiging praning nya dahil sa drugs.  parang wala siyang story and just babbles.

in short, walang isang style si bloomfield. proof of that is the album, "If you love thes blues, play 'em as you please."

i also have a copy of his Live at the Waldorf album, if you want to hear searing Goldtop P90 tone!

txt txt na lang, boys  ;-)

Yeah, so sad to see JW in that state ;( when i got a copy of his dvd, my heart was beating furiously to watch him. when i popped it in the player, it bled ;(

heheheh, who wouldn't be worried if they didn't see robert johnson! how about conducting a seance/clinic where we summon the spirits of the departed guitar greats ;) (count me out! hahaha!) they can teach us their stuff! btw- (off topic) didn't guitar player magazine have a Jimi issue where the interviewers sought the services of a medium to contact him? Jimi stated that he liked Clapton Unplugged. I lost my copy of that...

hmm, great idea for a new thread, hehehehe... will post

Jimi Hendrix. . . .he's the best for me.

Balak ko sanang mag-shift ng instrument from guitar to sax. . . .mag-gigitara na lang ulit ako.. . hehehe

To all Jimi Hendrix fans .. . ..highly recommended ko yung Room Full of Mirrors . .

eto yung mga gusto ko sa nabasa..

. ..ayon. .the rest is history.

. .the front stage is wet. ...sinabi kung bakit. . . . .etc.  Na-inspire si Jack Bruce at nagawa niya yung riff ng Sunshine of Your Love

. .kundi

Im sorry bro but I have Henderson's blues album. It sucked bigtime. I forgot the title of the album coz its really forgettable. I respect him as a fusion player but as a blues guitarist, I think he is trying too hard. my personal opinion though..

whew.. sorry.. I guess I've been too hard. what I really meant was I expected something from that album and its turned out that its not what Im looking for. Henderson is a great guitar player. I liked his other albums more than that blues one.

Which album did you listen to? Have you heard Dog Party or Well to the Bone?

Scott Henderson is one of my biggest hero's...

Contrary to what you think I like him better playing blues and Jazz rather than Fusion....

Dog Party was named blues album of the year when it came out FYI....

SRV syempre.  It's so easy to like his playing.  So inspiring, that it makes you want to grab your guitar and just jam to the song.  I caught a vid way back of his Texas Flood live performance, & masasabi ko lang... grabe... talk about playing a gig and leaving part of you on that stage.  I'm sure marami rin ang na-inspire with that performance.

I know some of you blues guys would cringe, but Jimmy Page is also a major inspiration.  Song in particular, since I've been loving you.  If you listen closely, you can hear little nuances in his playing, pick dynamics, soft / loud segments, toggling the pickup selector... yep... maririnig mo... in those days, recording a song in a lot of tracks was a rarity, so it's just a good track with little to none of doubling or layering tracks.  And when I heard those subtle nuances, along with his expressive playing, I was totally dumbfounded and awestruck.

These two, SRV and Jimmy Page, are my blues guitar heroes.   :-)

not the "in step" album.....sa original release a? but sa remastered/new release ng in step, yes nandun ang "life without you" na live.

Post by: guitarpie on July 21, 2008, 01:15:35 AM

Bro yung Cause We've Ended As Lovers, sa Blow By Blow album, ok din ba sa 'yo? Up to now hindi pa rin ako nagsasawa na pakinggan yun.. from the time, year it was released, pati yung Wired album, we got hooked to it ng mga friends ko.. sarap mag-blues ni Jeff Beck no?

unang una kong zinifra yung stormy monday ( Live ) kaya sina Duane at Dikky Betts 1st influence ko. Sobrang trip ko yung Elizabeth Reed nun at yung "Since I've been lovin' you" ng Led Zep. Not everyone appreciates Page's blues playing...

I saw Clapton live when I was in high school. pati Canned Heat, Peter Frampton atbp... si SRV magaling, pero mas pinakikingan ko yung idol niyang si Jimy. sabi nga ng tropa ko... kung blues rin lang, mag Hendrix kana! no disrespect to SRV here... the man's got a great tone! loved his " Sky is Cryin", Riviera Paradise and Little Wing of course!

). 4 me mas effective siya as Rock gitarist nung kasama pa siya sa Thin Lizzy, Skid Row at ni Greg Lake. pero masarap gamitin as background music yung "still got the blues" pang 4play... lalo na pag sisisid ka... mapapapikit yung partner mo! hehehe...

Present! Jimmy Page got me to play the guitar pero siya din nagdala sakin sa mga older blues players. John Lee Hooker yung isa sa mga unang pinakinggan ko na black guitarist at saka Otis Rush and of course The Three Kings. Galing nila.

MICHAEL 'Mike' BLOOMFIELD
(http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee86/redeepswols/mike_bloomfield_zpsc8b2e3cf.jpg) (http://s228.photobucket.com/user/redeepswols/media/mike_bloomfield_zpsc8b2e3cf.jpg.html)

The music precedes the man. Very few here knew the genius of this great Chicago bluesman. I only have to hear him once (Super Session with Al Kooper) for me to say this is the best blues guitar player ever to have awed and inspire me. Very loose and fluid improvisation. I have never seen anyone who has the heart and soul in playing blues guitar without any 'yabang', just pure passion! He is sorely missed.

trivia: it was bloomfield who discovered and introduced the young Johnny Winter into the music world.

Nadiscover ko si Mike Bloomfield not too long ago when I was reading a top 10 list of best guitar solos, instant fan agad ako! Unang pakinig ko ng Albert's shuffle, I felt the same way when I heard Hendrix and Albert Collins play the blues! Albert Collins naman when I heard the song If trouble was money, instant fan din ako! Maraming mas sikat at highly revered blues musicians like BB King, Albert King, SRV,  that i love. But Hendrix, Bloomfield, and Collins inspire me the most pag blues.

Buhayin ko lang...

I got hooked into listening and playing blues because of John Mayer although he is not my best inspiration. I learned that he was heavily influenced by SRV, BB King and Hendrix and these 3 started it for me.

Learning SRV's and Hendrix's songs expanded the horizon in my playing style and on the way I approach learning new songs (I avoid barre chords as much as possible  :-D)

I also listen to Albert King, Jeff Buckley, Buddy Guy, and Kakoy Legaspi's bluesy stuff. I'm sure there are more but these are the ones I can think of right now

P.S. I might raise some eyebrows with what I'm about to say next but...
I never really liked Clapton  :-\  Peace

That's funny, Tinnie. To be honest, kayo ni psychic_sushi a.ka. Anton ang blues idols ko.
