well it's hard to keep up with anybody else lalo na sa mabigat na tugtugan... especially in gigs where the mics don't really help.

Post by: Bammbamm on November 10, 2006, 02:58:57 PM

How do you utilize them to spice up the groove?
Saang part ng kit naka-mount?
Any tips?
Share them here sana! :-)
Title: Re: Percussions Thread
Post by: pmack on November 10, 2006, 03:35:44 PM

peace!

great thread!

When I was still with my former band, I used to have an LP Cyclops mounted tambourine.  It has brass jingles, which produces a brighter sound.  I mounted it over the snare drum, between the hi-hat and the rack tom. We had cover songs na pwedeng lagyan ng tambourine backbeats (examples - Toto's "I'll Be Over You", Gin Blossoms' "As Long As It Matters", etc.).  I can also play the tambourine on the upbeats of grooves, just like what Mike Portnoy did on the last part of the instrumental section of "Caught In A Web".  It can also come in handy for effects during certain musical situations.

Right now, I'm thinking of re-adding a mounted tambourine.  It might come in handy for some r&b/hiphop grooves.  I'm also thinking of adding a cowbell on my set-up.  I want to work on Latin-style grooves with cowbells.  Nakaka-inspire kasi ang mga ginagawa nila Horacio Hernandez, Akira Jimbo, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Rodney Holmes, and all those great drummers na gumagamit ng mga cowbells creatively.  Pwede rin ang foot pedal-operated cowbell or wood block.  I'm planning to do these someday.

Title: Re: Percussions Thread

Im currently using an LP tambourine mounted just below the hat cymbals and two cowbells (meinl & Pearl fusion) mounted on the bass drum (between toms)
I love the sound of the pearl fusion cowbell specially when using nylon tip sticks or a bigger tipped sticks. Parang electronic ang attack nya pero andun pa din yung characteristic ng cowbell sound which reminds me of Herbie Hancocks "Rock It".

Anyway, thanks for the replies!

Keep it up, God bless! :-)

dami kong percussion toys sa bahay. dati i go for LP exclusively but too expensive. dadi na lang ngayon at kung ano ano pang generic na nabibili sa lazer. id rather bring 2 heavy bags containing exotic toys rather than bring a kahon when we go tripping. i still dont have congas though, laki e, wala ng space. most recent toy i got was a doumbek, a gift last xmas

i mean, just listen to some latin music and maririnig mo yung patterns nila. mas astig nga ang patterns ng bongos kasi more often than not, medyo syncopated sila.

Post by: peeves24 on January 15, 2007, 08:15:50 PM
meron...its true that its mostly based on feeling but the native players have a different feel for music than our westernized feel. chances are you do drumkit beats on the bongo which is not always appropriate.

ang hirap matuto ng traditional patterns ng bongo kung basa at pakikinig lang. listening helps a lot but you might not get the complete picture. if you listen to band records, you miss out the grace notes on the bongos (or congas) and only hear the accent hits.

example, its common knowledge to us that the samba is dum-dudum-dudum-dudum on the bass drum but in fact its not. its much more than that and you can do samba without the bass drum.

the best option kung may magtuturo talagang knowledgeable or kung wala, dvd instructional man lang sana.

I changed the topic title to the Percussion Thread.  I hope you won't mind, DNS.

I know there are a lot of talented Pinoy percussionists out there.  Examples of percussionists whom I've already heard and witnessed are Bo Razon and Egay Caole.  There are many more great players whom I've seen and heard, but don't know their names.

Please note down percussionists who are worth checking out.  Info about them will be appreciated as well.   8-)

RLRL RRLR RLRR LRLR

Malupit talaga yung percussionist!
Malupit as in malupit! :-D

ever played with someone on percussions?

how does it feel?

did it affect the way you play?
Title: Re: Perc combo
Post by: drumster on March 06, 2007, 04:52:32 PM
It's not for all styles of music.  But it can be fun.

I just have to make sure that I listen to the percussionist's parts too, so that my drumming jives with his playing.  And I always hope that the percussionist also has the same mentality.

Because I had an experience where in the percussionist was really playing all over the music.  It was hard.  He was showboating too much.  And it's about the music.  It's not his solo concert.  Hehe..  :-D
Title: Re: Perc combo
Post by: inigo on March 06, 2007, 05:11:09 PM
It makes me play less, because I know he fills some stuff in. Poste galore. But as if I play all over the place.

Sometimes I think up my licks from what he does. So it's fun, this way.

On percussionists playing all over: Sometimes I try to control our percussionist for kicks, like doing something awkward in the middle of his building momentum, throwing him off sometimes (ang sama ko, hahaha).
Title: Re: Perc combo
Post by: meinldrummer on March 06, 2007, 08:36:43 PM
I play with my brother na percussionist ko sa band namin. You tend to play less because he fills up the rhythm. Masarap ang feeling kse busog ang tugtugan. It's also fun kse you get to trade licks occasionally when given your spot. Plus he can also be your timekeeper naman when it's your time to solo.

Downside lang pag wala yun percussionist hinahanap hanap mo yun tunog nya. :-)

waw dami nang nangyayari dito ah.

narinig nyo na ba yung BRIGADA? I heard they're really good.

For jamming.. clinics.. stuff that guitar orgs or drum orgs do.

PERCUSSIONS PILIPINAS.

hahaa.. or pdeng iba.

and para maraming resources.. i've been trying to get contacts so that i can get a kulintang. wala akong mahanap na deep in the muslim region nakatira eh. kaya ung mga prices na nakukuha ko laging mahal.

and merong pattern ang bongos.. hahaa late response. yung martillo yung basic. malapit ung tunog nya sa tumbao pattern ng conga. and it has a half count early.. or maganda sana kung ganon para nakalabas ung mga slaps.

toys? umm.. pinakabago kong toy, yung dalawang magnet na itlog na binabato pataas tapos nag rarattle sound. hahahaa pero hirap i-mic nun..

I'm learning bongos. Just got a pair a few months back. Been listening a lot to Putomayo sounds lately.. Kailangan kasi mapasok mga afro-cuban latin beats sa puso mo if you really want to get a groove. So far, I'm playing around with the martillo experimenting with diff accents and patterns.

Sometimes, I jam with electronica music. I'm into clubbing kasi before pa. Sana may nagtuturo ng bongos, congas, djembes, timbales or doumbeks dito..

Isa rin sa favorite sound ko is the Indian tabla.. meron kaya gumagamit nun dito? :)

@ Sir Cosmic Adobo: Its an honor sir.

I'm jamming with a band ngayon who plays metal music so parang Puya yung lumalabas pag kasama nila ako :-D j/k... 1 time palang ako nakasama sa gig @ Center for Arts and since then, dami line-up na gigs for the band, di nga lang ako nakakasama hehehe. I'm more into the African - Percussion sounds though i don't think I sound anything close to it. I grew up listening to a Neo-African band called Tantra (nasa LP or plaka yung copy ko nun).

Ok, salamat.  :-)

ayun....

Post by: cky on March 16, 2008, 04:48:44 PM

diba percussion gamit nila?

I'm not a percussionist but I like their sounds.

thanks guys

Pag medyo hirap kayo sa timing, gamit kayo metronome. Dun kayo mag practice ng beats at rudiments kasabay nun. Then saka kayo pwede mag out ng timing, OK lang, alam nyo na pano bumalik hehe. Sa youtube madami videos ng mga beats saka rhythms na pwede nyong gayahin, pero pag off ang timing mo practice ka muna with a metronome ;-)

Nag try ako dati mag form ng drum circle, last year, naka isang meet lang.

school sya in the sense na structured ung lessons.. simula umpisa pano gawin ung 3 types of sounds ng djembe (proper techniques) hanggang sa pagaaral ng traditional and popular west african rhythms.. tpos certified ung teacher.. we pay monthly class fees and drum rentals kung wala kang sariling djembe.. and may grades or levels (1-8, 1 being the beginner)

most of them goat skin, hindi ko lang alam yung kahoy...one is from Indonesia (yung may dragon painting), yung dalawa TOCA, yung parang darbuka (black&white checkers) from egypt, yung dalawa (yung may embossed lizard and plain) ginawa dito sa pinas, yung doumbek galing turkey...so mejo diverse yung origin nila which makes us quite unaware sa materials....though i admit na mejo mali din na hindi namin alam yung buong "pagkatao" ng instrumento namin...yung iba kasi pinapadala, binigibigay, tapos pinapagawa sa mga gumagawa without giving the origin of the instruments...kasi later on nalang ang researching....

yup mejo mas mahirap so you need to exercise your fingers a bit...even sa doumbek mahina lang kasi yung bass ng mga yun kaya sa fingerplay sila bumabawi...pag gumagawa kami ng beats mejo pinapalawak ko yung pwedeng gawin sakanila para at least hindi maconstraint in a way yung identity nung drums...hehe... :-D

may shinare ung kakilala kong tabla player dito.. sana makatulong..

dami kong percussion toys sa bahay. dati i go for LP exclusively but too expensive. dadi na lang ngayon at kung ano ano pang generic na nabibili sa lazer. id rather bring 2 heavy bags containing exotic toys rather than bring a kahon when we go tripping. i still dont have congas though, laki e, wala ng space. most recent toy i got was a doumbek, a gift last xmas

order ka nalang siguro sa net ser...padaan mo sa mga nasa classifieds, yung mga nagsship dun ng items from outside of the country...one alternative is, buy a fiberskin batter ng drumset pero mahirap ikabit yun kasi matigas kasi pang drumset sya..pwede lang kasi sya sa djembe kasi yung material nya...but then hindi sya recommended...

yung situation kasi ng friend ko e nabutas yung skin ng djembe nya from baguio to manila...nainitan kasi ata sa estribo...
\ayun, dahil walang mahanap e pinagtyagaan nalang namin iilagay yung fiberskin batter na yun...ok naman tunog nung nalagay namin...kaso pahirapan yung replacement... :-D but as much as possible, get a real skin... :-D

You can buy goat skin sa Sta.

"genuine"??

@ to everyone

Last year nagkaroon kami ng maliit na gathering ng ilan sa mga friends na percussionist, we had it here in REMEDIOS St. last June fiesta kasi so we thought mag-jam kami. namely Long15, Job, Jp Tambol, and RJ_conga (as I named him). This year Im planning to have the same gathering on May but Im having trouble with sponsorship for food specially comfort room hehehe.

Anyone has an idea/opinion? will be greatly appreciated.

This I guess would be a great way to meet up, and jam up the summer

Here are some of the pix, medyo maliit cyencya na..

@ Cky, great idea but we don't have a place here at remedios that would resemble a nature like setting. CCP or PICC maybe but we don't have shade and comfort room there. Close yun street nung magJam kami sa remedios kasi fiesta at may bingo.... side show lang kami, just having fun....

MAMADY KEITA’S MINI-GUINEA CAMP ASIA

About MAMADY KEITA’S MINI-GUINEA CAMP ASIA

Mamady Keita, the great djembefola from Guinea (West Africa), will be holding his Mini-Guinea 2010 Asia djembe workshop in Singapore. There will be 8 days of workshop for djembe players of intermediate level and above. Mamady will be teaching traditional rhythms, solo technique and his compositions.

Tuition starts 10 Sept Friday morning at 10AM with a 4 hour all levels class. During this 1st class, Mamady will decide which students will be in the first group, typically considered "Intermediate", and which students will move on to the second group (at 12PM), typically considered "Advanced". In the evening there will be a 2 hour performance class, all levels combined, called the Pyramid class. In the Pyramid class, Mamady will teach students a performance, to be presented to the public on 19 Sept after the entire workshop. There will be a rest day on 13Sept.

Participants can also expect to see djembe performances by various percussion groups on some evenings after the workshop. On the night before the Pyramid Performance when the workshop has ended, there will be an opportunity where all participants can get together for a party. Our grandmaster drummer Mamady Keita will definitely be there!

Title: Re: Percussion Thread
Post by: congaslap on October 04, 2010, 07:08:41 PM
@in-the-tent

Title: Re: Percussion Thread
Post by: congaslap on October 11, 2010, 02:48:13 PM
@Kawal
Sir maraming step by step sa youtube on how to replace conga head. :-)
Title: Re: Percussion Thread
Post by: kawal on October 11, 2010, 08:30:09 PM
^you mean baka or kalabaw? gusto ko kasi i-DIY nalang, eh sa labas lang ng village namin may kambingan so madali ako makaka-score ng skin.
Title: Re: Percussion Thread
Post by: congaslap on October 11, 2010, 09:10:56 PM

eto isa sa mga video:

make use of extra thin and thin weight splashes around 8-12 inches. have mics setup as well, one sa cajon port, one sa bonggos then one more kung kakanta ka din (just in case..)
Title: Re: Percussion Thread
Post by: eisenworx on May 31, 2012, 03:23:36 PM
Good point Sir riff_6603, kahit s outdoor set up like bars ito ang mdalas ko mkitang set-up ng mga kahonista. Mic-in ang mga instruments from the chime and bongos to the cahon itself. Kung church set-up I suggest you should also use splash with warm tone so it would blend in with the church music (solem).

Post by: jmbrul143 on July 26, 2013, 03:15:04 PM

They are in a situation very much like the aetas noong early 90's.
