SMEAR-CAMPAIGN is a female-fronted dark rock band from the New York City area. Layering complex vocal and instrumental textures, their music is innovative, powerful, and sophisticated with an ambient, moody groove. Audiences have described their music as “sultry metal” and “Portishead meets Tool, Clutch, and Faith No More”.

SMEAR-CAMPAIGN is comprised of five musicians: Maria Aggabao (vocals), Craig Franklin (bass), Danny Murphy (guitar), Steve Dorlen (drums), and Mike Ferguson (aka DJ Dubcrash) (synth, electronic sounds). In addition to playing with Smear-Campaign, Danny and Steve have worked as studio musicians performing on soundtracks for shows such as MTV Cribs and Nick at Night. Originally hailing from Detroit, Mike (aka DJ DUBCRASH) was a founding member of the innovative and acclaimed band Skinhorse. Dubcrash also spins in and around NYC and has created his own label, Machine Tribe Recordings, which caters to electronic acts. Prior to joining Smear-Campaign, Maria has sung with other rock bands and music groups, singing everything from rock to R&B to dance. She has performed at such venues as Irving Plaza, CBGB, and Town Hall Theater in New York City and has opened up for acts such as 2 Skinnee Js.
Maria has also performed in Off-Broadway productions and had the opportunity to perform with several well-known Broadway performers. Craig Franklin has been playing bass in rock bands for several years prior to joining Smear. He is also an accomplished artist and illustrator.

SMEAR-CAMPAIGN completed their 4-track EP early in 2002 at Sonic Boom Studios in New Jersey. The songs were produced by Anthony Krizan (SPIN DOCTORS, songwriter for various artists including Lenny Kravitz). Anthony also contributed musically to the CD playing haunting keys on the first single "Cold", a dark and ambient piece capturing the mood of solitude in a relationship. Another track, "Far Better Place", begins with an atmospheric guitar line and is a genuine exploration of the abuse and circumstance of obsessive love.  The other tracks, “Travesty” and “Freak”, demonstrate the band’s ability to play aggressive hard rock. Inspired by a vast collection of artists such as Portishead, Jane's Addiction, Led Zeppelin, and Tool, SMEAR-CAMPAIGN delivers an ambitious and emotionally charged first EP release. In turn, they transfer that raw energy to their live shows.
