Try Bosny gray primer.  It's a cheaper alternative to Tamiya.

I'll give it a shot although it comes in spray cans, di ba? Decanting that for airbrushing might be a chore.

Try using it straight from the can.

Try using it straight from the can.

I usually have a problem with spray cans where the coat either spray on too thick for my taste or I get orange peel, even when preheating the can prior to use. That's why I prefer airbrushing.

I just recently got me some oil pastels so I can experiment with color modulation. That will come later as soon as I get enough time to build and maybe finish at least one plane... maybe when I retire.  :|

I recently used tamiya white primer and I'm familiarizing myself with airbrushing the darned thing since my first try came out rough. Fine sandpaper fixed that problem and it's a good thing that I'm priming some oldies in my collection. I'm thinking I used too much thinner but too little and I get that familiar spattering. What to do, what to do?

I agree. It's come a long way from when Monogram kits were about 100 bucks each.

You could always try cars and motorcycles if shelf space is a bit of a problem, and they cost less usually unless you go for the high grade large scale kits. Tanks are also excellent space savers but weathering them can be a challenge. I build planes because I like aviation, but they take up shelf space like crazy! Especially if you deal with 1/48 bombers and 1/32 jets like I do. (1/48 B-52 or Tu-95/142... now THERE's a thought...)

You could try looking at the '2nd hand' kits in some stores. For ex., there's this shop at SM North near the foodcourt where they sell some kits that were damaged by Ondoy. The downside is that they don't have decals (obviously) and sometimes are missing the instructions and box.

These kits sell for far less but if you need decals, you will either have to order from abroad or write the manufacturer (they do reply... I once had a Monogram EA-6B with a missing refueling probe and they sent me a replacement via snail mail that I thought would never arrive). For instructions, you can sometimes find these on the net in .pdf format.

Natalie of JMN Hobbies in Harrison Plaza sometimes consigns 2nd hand kits.

I agree about kits costing a thousand bucks nowadays. Factor in the cost of tools and paints/airbrush and the cost goes up even more. I did start with brush painting on 1/72 scale aircraft when I took up this hobby many moons ago. Back then, subject matter was very limited and tools even more so. You might say the present generation is very lucky to have such diversity at this time, plus you have the internet to see if a model kit is worth it.

My advice? Start with small scales and choose a relatively simple subject matter. There's nothing that kills inspiration more than starting a project that has no hope of being finished. Ika nga, "don't bite off more than you can chew".

Depends on the condition of the kit. If the box is pristine and the parts are still encased in plastic bags, then it could be priced higher than usual. Of course, subject matter and limited run kits plays a big part in pricing. You might want to check out the local chapter of IPMS if you are interested in buying of selling old kits especially when they have a scheduled competition/exhibition.

I once bought a 2nd hand kit. It was a 1/32nd scale Tamiya F-14A that was previously owned by Alfie Anido. Good thing di ako minulto ng dating may-ari. hehe

Ewan ko lang kung nandun pa ang mga 2nd hand. I saw a box on the floor filled with familiar plastic bags with sprues and parts. I immediately knew they were water damaged items. They had some Star Wars kits in those bag... sayang, I wanted a TIE fighter sana to escort my Darth Vader TIE fighter.

I used to have 2 of those Tamiya F-14s. I bought the updated version which turned the Tomcat into a F-14A Plus 'Bombcat' and updated the exhaust nozzles to represent a GE F101. I gave the Anido F-14 to my cousin as a gift since I don't have space for 2 1/32nd scale F-14s.

At present, I have several 1/32 aircraft... the F-14, Tamiya F-15E, Hasegawa F-16C (actually an A), Ju87B Stuka, and Fw-190D. Add to that the 1/48 B-1B (3 ft. long!) and I guess you can imagine the immense space requirements. This partially explains why I haven't been building much since my present residence is somewhat cramped and I haven't gone to buying glass enclosed shelves yet.

I'll post pics when I can. I'm trying to airbrush again but rains literally put a damper to painting... the compressor will spew out water since it lacks a water trap.

At siguraduhin ko na gawing diorama para display kagad at hindi masira. Anyone knows kung saan maganda bumili ng miniature nowadays? Kasi wala na ko nakikita na neutral grounds. TIA

I haven't been here in a while...

There's this shop in Trinoma 2nd flr that seems to sell figures and even paints (which have piqued my interest since they have this particular shade that's awfully close to russian cockpit bluegreen). It's opposite that Bench salon.

In Greenhills Virra Mall 3rd flr, I think they also sell figurines there, and also at Shoppesville 3rd flr.

Damn these rains... it's making it hard to airbrush. Got my eye on a Hasegawa EA-18G; sana meron sa Lil's. Let me know if you guys see any. I might spring for the Trumpeter 1/32 version if I'm lucky.

Darn... the E-2C was missing one friggin part! Maybe this weekend.

EDIT: I decided to get the Hawkeye even if it was missing a piece. I could fabricate the part since it looks like a grill anyway. Also got a new scriber from trumpeter. Hope these chinese tools stays sharp. Also saw a mini motor tool but at 2k+, I balked at the price. Maybe after I look at a dremel.

Hi! I was into modelling in my junior high school days (with my best buddy), but stopped during college until i had work (due to time constraints). i was into cars and WWII aircrafts. But these past few years (after decades whew!) i find myself buying some out-of-production kits online. I want to go back to the fun world of model making. My latest purchase was a 1/25 scale MPC stock car series that has been discontinued for the past 35 years, still FACTORY SEALED!!! for 90US$! it was a real gem finding that one as it came out when i was in high school but i couldn't afford it that time (that was my biggest frustration then). In fact i don't even know what to do with it now, as i don't want to ruin its 'priceless' factory seal to open it. For the time being, i'm into gathering reference photos of the actual defunct stock car for details. Im still waiting for the time that i'll be brave enough to rip that precious box open!  :-o
