While I know that the snare in recorded album tracks are mixed, I just want to know what to do to get close to that sound. Do I make my batter head tighter than the resonant, the other way around? Both loose?

Salamat po

It's a boxy snare sound, medium tension on top,on bottoms medium to a bit tight.
It's an open sounding snare so less mufflng.what heads do you use? Get a coated head na 1 ply.

It came with a Remo G1 Coated batter head. Now when you say medium, do I still get a fair rebound on it or is it closer to a no-rebound tension?

Remo? It should be named ambassadors or emperor or diplomat,g1 is for Evans, hehe,
Medyo compromise ang rebound kasi if you tend to loosen the tension.
I want rebound on my snare so it's more a fairly tight settings. Try first medium tension on the snare,
Then feel if it's near your sound, start from there. The more you loosen the tension the response of the rebound would be sacrificed.

Maganda itong Pork Pie "Black On Brass"(BOB). Binansagan ngang "Poor man's Black Beauty" yan internationally. Tas palitan mo agad yung triple flange hoops ng S-Hoops. Yun na! Mismo na lalo ang tunog! Pang all-around. I always recommend Evans Genera Dry. Not the Genera HD Dry, but Genera Dry lang. It's a single ply same as Evans G1 and Remo Ambassador. Difference is it has a built in ring muffler with vent holes. Maganda sir. No need for external muffling such as O-Rings na makakaabala pag nagba-brush ka na, no need na rin ng moongels.
Planning for a Band Rehearsal Studio business. Baka may alam kayong space for rent around QC area lang. Please PM me. Thank you.

At oo! Mismong Oo talaga! Kailangan magbenta ng Kidney pa bago makakuha ng Black Beauty :-( What makes it so expensive?

Those are the ''essentials" so to speak. Isang Birch, great for recording purposes. Isang Maple, great for live gig situations. Try to get some Brass shell not just a Steel made shell. One of the greats din yon like the Black Beauty and the Pork Pie Bob. You're on the right track sir. Tama rin yang naiisip mo na kahit isang Piccolo. Not necessarily a 14x3 or 13x3 but atleast 13x7 or 13x5 will do.

Try to observe most drummers who has promising capabilities(here and/or abroad) yet being practical on what is only needed. Yung ibang marame naman snare na made of different kinds of wood or steel shells, various sizes, at kung ilang snare lugs such as 8lugs or 10lugs are just adding spice in their collection or preferred snare sound which is not bad at all. After all kanya kanyang free will naman yan eh. Kumbaga sa nilutong pagkain, yung iba gusto maalat yung iba naman maanghang o maasim o matamis o matabang o walang lasa.

Very well said. I agree with this as well.

Pero ako, not so much sa variety ng wood masyado, pero more on size differences.

I'll get the following snares if I could:

14  X4.5 or 14 x 5.5 Wood Snare (Standard Size)
13 x 4 or 13 x 3 Picollo Snare
13 x 7 or 14 x 6 Wood Snare (para deep!)
10 x 6 Popcorn Snare Steel

Yan. I think solve na ako jan. mas malaki kasi ang difference ng size eh. yung wood kasi, not really very audible. pwera nalang kung steel versus wood. then again, YMMV.

anong music tinutugtog mo? asking for a snare recommendation like that will cost you a lot of money and frustration. kasi lahat kami dito sulsul-tant at mahilig kami magbigay ng unsolicited sulsultation.

snares are a very personal choice, ask yourself, do they (your snares) represent who you are? kasi kahit gano karami naman snare mo, may isa o dalawa ka lang din na palaging babalikan dyan kasi yun yung naririnig mo sa ulo mo at yun yung sa tingin mo e tunog mo.

and then one day, you realize nagbago na yung taste mo at hindi na yung sound na yun ang hanap mo ngayon kaya maghahanap ka na naman ng bago mong representative snare.

this happened to me 5 times already and i have 4 snares from each era. more than 5 snares na ko noon pero binenta ko yung mga weak snares. some are just better than others so i dont need to keep everyone.

favorite to least:
1. 1964 white marine pearl gretsch renown 14x6 plywood
2. pearl free floating 14x3.5 steel
3. pearl sensitone brass 14x5 - my "black beauty" clone because everybody needs a BoB
4. tama starphonic 14x6.5 aluminum - sold to harugrug but i bought it back because i want to sound like steve jordan/john mayer "vultures"

more than 4 pa pala ko kasi meron ako 2 unused:
custom made keller maple 14x5 - still with me, disassembled. this is my first diy snare ever

custom made 8x4 acrylic snare - still with me, cant remember where it is

these were sold:
dw collectors natural finish 14x5 - just didnt sound right. its an expensive display/status symbol.

joey jordison sig, sounded fat. uso dati. not my cup of tea.

pearl marc quinones sig - too much overtone, magandang gamitin sa ati atihan.

tama bronze 14x7 - bought from ebay, its too much metal for me. malakas, masakit sa dibdib at sa tenga.

pearl firecracker 12x5 - nice pero bitin. basta may kulang e.

custom made maple steambent 14x6 - i needed cash back then. im sorry, i want you back

custom made 13x5 acrylic - sounds like a steel snare. i was building a lot of acrylics back then so i didnt bother to take a pic - this lasted just 1 day when i realized acrylics are not for me.

custom made 12x5 aluminum - cute, kaya lang nabenta kasama nung jungle kit ko

Sige... gaganda lang ng snares mo bro!

Ako, I really regret letting go of my Black Panther Walnut 13x6 snare :| discontinued na... sigh...

Quwation, does the starphonic snare really sound like Steve jordan's Vulture snare? (i.e. Really deep and tom-ish) i always thought Wood Snare yun hahaha

malapit na malapit. yung depth nya kasi at yung natural dryness ng aluminum makes it ideal. pang low tuning lang talaga sa kin tong starphonic, my gretsch does everything else better  :-D

i still want a supraphonic someday. malamang kapag nakabili ko nun, mawala na ng tuluyan tong starphonic

supra ni inigo, i tuned it low
