Title: Newbie! Buying my first camera and I need help!
Post by: JanMayer on July 08, 2017, 03:26:59 PM
Hi! Newbie ako pagdating sa cameras but I'm planning to start learning/doing some light film making for cinematic travel vlogs, b-rolls, etc. Mga tipong Daniel Marsh vids pero I know I have to learn some heavy editing din to achieve a good looking cinematic videos.

So ang question ko is. What kind of camera should I buy? I'm confused whether to buy a used GoPro or a used entry-level DSLR.

Naisip ko kasi yung GoPro kasi may nakita akong video sa youtube na gumawa siya ng cinematic sequences na gamit lang is GoPro, dinaan lang sa post editing (color correction, color grading, etc.) and honestly, it looks good. - Ang nacanvass ko na is used GoPro Hero 4 Silver/Black around 8-10k makuha if used. Muntik na ako bumili last week pero nag hesitate ako if ito ba yung tamang camera para sa purpose ko.

Sa DSLR naman, hindi ko pa sure kung ano advantage nito over the GoPro but ito yung madalas ko nakikita na ginagamit talaga nila to film those cinematic videos and I assume mas maganda ang quality nito? - Ang suggestions ng iba is Canon 600D, I saw some used ranging from 11k-15k. So I might have to save up a little to get this camera pero willing naman ako.

I'm trying to steer clear from mirrorless cameras kasi mahal hahaha

Thank you in advance guys!

Ok ganito pre.

GoPro -

pros: small, can be put anywhere
cons: battery life, fixed focal length

Ok lang if youre choosing this. Madami na din available after market upgrades na pwede mo magamit to enhance your creativity.

DSLR -

Pros: wide lens selection, full control of settings
Cons: bulky, battery life, cannot be used if youre the rugged type of shooter, hindi waterproof

If you pair this with a fast lens(lens with wide apertures), you can achieve good bokeh on your vids for added effect.

Not sure if the color range is better or the same with GoPro. Also, try to compare the iso ranges of the two.

It wouldnt end with the purchase of the units alone btw. Bibili ka ng spare batteries, stabilizers, mic at iba pang gamit na kakailanganin mo for your videos.

Uy paps Marzi thank you!

Gusto ko nga sana GoPro kasi mas handy and portable dalhin lalo na sa pag travel kaso ang worry ko is baka limited lang yung kaya ni GoPro and baka hindi ko mapractice or mapag aralan yung mga cinematic shots na balak ko. Or yung post editing talaga nag dadala nung cinematic shots na ganun?

Ang gusto ko naman sa DSLR eh is parang maganda yung learning curve niya, kung gusto ko matuto talaga ng mga settings then I think ito yung best. Anyway, may suggestions ka bang entry-level models na DSLR? yung may flip screen sana and ext mic input hehe

its all about post processing.

sample: a video i shot back in 2014 when i took my daughter to bora. i consider this a milestone for her dahil first time mag enjoy sa dagat at unlimited walking practice.

shot entirely with a beat up Samsung PL170 digicam i bought back in 2009. the shutter mechanism is broken so di na ko maka take ng pics. i only took 10sec clips tapos tagpi tagpi ko na lang in post.

another sample: taken in bohol

shot with a borrowed Pentax KS2 entry level slr. again, short clips. pero habang tumatagal, medyo nabubuo na sa isip ko yung kailangan kong mga kuha.

you'll have to forgive me if i used unlicensed songs on these videos. sila talaga yung naisip ko ilagay sa simula pa lang. i do not have enough knowledge in color grading, transitioning, etc pero kung nabigyan ako ng enough time para i-research, maybe i would have applied some on my works. all i know is i have a story to tell. pansinin mo din na pangit ako mag angle, shaky hands at paling paling yung orientation ng scenes. i shot entirely handheld with no image stabilization activated on cams.

pwede ka sa GoPro mo pero max mo yung budget to 15k para sa pagbili ng add ons. yan tapos work out all its kinks. eventually, maiintindihan mo yung mga totoong kailangan mo which will lead to purchasing a better unit.

Film making...

my POV, you need both. apples vs oranges kasi eh. depende sa gagawin mong viodeos kung ano uunahin mo, but one cannot fully sub for the other.

kung adventure/travel type of videos, may GoPro/Action cam ka nalang. pero kung artsy and swabehan shots, shempre sa DSLR ka.

sa SLR imho lente na nagkakatalo.

i will help you decide on GoPro:

may lens add on ang GoPro to enable zoom and other effects. at mas mura ang stabilizer ng GoPro haha 2.5k yung pinakamurang nakita ko na portable din.

another thing that you can do with a GoPro na hindi mo magagawa sa dslr: pwede mo sya ibato hahaha. rather than use a monopod to raise the camera, yung GoPro ibato mo sa ere to capture unique perspectives.

Need help. Wifey wants to buy a camera (mirrorless). Ano ba maganda between the two, Canon M6 or Fuji X-A3? Budget is around 30k max. Total noob when it comes to camera. :nosebleed: Thanks!

I think Canon M6. But I doubt na makakuha ka ng M6 sa price range na yan haha M3 price range kasi yan.

yah oo nga, na check ko with kimstore/jeps. Sige stretch ko budget to 35k.

What I liked about it is the image quality but ang pinaka nagustuhan ko is yung Dual Pixel Auto Focus. I'm into vlogging kasi ngayon kaya medyo focused ako sa video. M6 also has external microphone input, X-A3 doesn't.

Saan niyo ba gagamitin? more on vids or stills?

Kung for pics lang hmmm.. di ako masyado maalam sa pics pero baka overkill si M6, if hindi naman serious photography siguro? Hahaha di ko talaga alam bro. Paps Marzi pasok! hahaha

Pero kung nothing serious and kung gusto lang talaga makakuha ng decent pictures, there are cheaper models sa Canon Mirrorless line. Yung M3 you can get for around 20-25k brand new basta hindi sa mall. And M10 pwedeng pwede makakuha below 20k brand new.

Yung Canon M3 is a great camera na din, halos same specs kay m6.

okay naman yung dalawang choices mo. but since ako magcocomment, canon na hehehe.

ngayon kung yung baby nyo lagi kukunan - you can buy an adaptor(EOS-EOS M) tapos bili ka ng 50mm 1.8 stm. its a very decent prime lens. im upgrading gears now pero di ko iiwan yung 50mm stm ko. if you want an all-rounder though, you can buy a M3 with EOS M 16-45mm kit lens(madalas naman bundled na to sa canon mirrorless). you can take shots of landscapes, portraits, group photos, basically everything with this lens. then you when feel the itch to add, dun mo score yung adapter at 50mm 1.8 stm.

paps kung video ang aim mo I suggest you go ahead with the high-end GoPro variants.. isa sa reason? very handy

syempre ibang iba ang quality kumpara sa mirrorless or smartphone pero you always get a chance to shoot anything anytime.

well, totoo naman na nikon sucks pag video. Pag photo, well, sort of. Maganda sya sa seascapes and landscapes. The "yellowish" raw output of nikon blends better sa harsh light settings para sa mga ganung subject and composition.

nikon at fuji nuon plang mahina na sa video. photos i believe hindi specific maganda pag nikon, lalo sa mga seascapes and landscapes. just look at edwin martinez and christian lim's amazing portfolios, and they are using canon.

The thing with nikon is that ilt is very useful in retrieving shadow details. Ive seen folks work on photos that are close to black dahil nagkamali ng settings pero after working it in post processing, damn.

Fuji, with its film emulation settings can allow you to create photos that are good sooc lalo na kung sucker ka sa film days. Their fuji looks are spot on.

Sony, well sony yan. Its the closest thing you can have kung di mo maafford ang leica. Topnotch quality kung top of the line ang gagamitin mo. But ive used an a6000 one time, binalik ko sa nagpahiram at bumalik ako sa gamit ko. Natanga ako sa settings e hehehe.

Canon, errr. Canonn user ako hahaha. Now im in another dilemma kung mag full frame 6d na ba ako o mirrorless m50. The latter being the closest i can have kung recent canon tech ang habol ko.

Entry evel olympus and pentax are good kung occasional shooting at hobbyist. But you want more or if you want to advance, go for the mainstream brands. May support ka dahil pwede ka makasali ng groups exclusively for the brand you are using. Si nikon, fuji and sony are very active in conducting workshops.

im just sharing from what i know before ha, matagal nakong nahinto pero im trying to comeback in photography, namiss ko e.

yung pag retrieve ng details based yan if jpeg or raw, obviously if you use raw madaling magretrieve ng shadow details kahit pa anong cam gamit mo. maybe my edge ang nikon, im not sure pero if you value details a lot then always shoot raw.

sony recently na lang din naman gumanda ang lineup nya e. a decade ago walang may gustong gumamit niyan dahil sa limited ung lens na available and sobrang mahal. yan ung reason why i shifted from sony to nikon. i started with a sony alpha dslr nun. pag napunta ako ng hidalgo to check lens and accessories mahirap maghanap kahit pa sa bangketa dun. since lang ata lumabas ung mga mirrorless niya tsaka siya naging relevant ulit e. malapit ba siya sa leica? i mean, leica is like the paris hilton of cameras, maganda na napakamahal pero ung pagkamahal niya e talagang malayo ata sa sony hehehe

ano bang line gusto mo, dslr or mirrorless? kung dslr gamit mo ngayon and meron ka pang lens na pwede for ff, go ff na. i'll tell you paps, sobrang fulfilling ng mga shots mo when you go ff. talagang kahit na madilim nun di ako takot mag boost ng iso ko tas raw file kasi naka ff naman ako e hahaha

^id disagree sa shadow detail retrieval dahil like ive said, ive seen people work on images that looked hopeless on nikons pero nagagamit pa talaga nila. even canon users swear they cant do the same with their images. and yes, theyre all working on raw files. some dude even posted an image taken by a canon while his co-shooter was using a nikon - they both had this one shot taken in different angles na parehong severely underexposed. being a what couldve been beautiful shot, the photog attempted to restore it. the 5d mark III failed but the nikon d750 file worked. kahit canon shooters aminado di daw talaga kaya ng ganun ka-dark. and being a canon shooter for almost 2 years, may first hand experience ako sa underexposed horrors hehehe.

true sa sony. when they entered the camera business parang taas kilay lahat eh. pero syempre, nakuha sa tiyaga and na-prove naman nila na kaya. at superb yung quality ng output, especially when youre shooting with carl zeiss batis lenses(which costs almost the same as the camera btw).

nga pala, we forgot the panasonic line. yung GH series solid din.

and tungkol naman sa mirrorless vs ff - i can use the lenses pa rin naman kahit mag mirrorless ako dahil may adapter naman na available. at inaabangan ko din magka budget ako para sa sigma 18-35 f1.8. so ayun, iniisip ko pa rin kung ff, mirrorless...o sigma 18-35 f1.8 hahaha!

my canon fanboy friends also swear by this as well. pag photo, mejo may edge si Nikon. pero lamang daw sa video ang canon and mas madali gamitin.

ako naman, Nikon user, and nung mga una, underexposed din ang shots ko. easy to fix naman sa snap seed even when shooting in JPEG.

id suggest that you start shooting in RAW(.NEF) format. oo mas malaki ang file size nya, pero sulit na sulit dahil malaking details ang mareretain/marerecover mo. pero kung minimal editing lang naman ginagawa mo, ok lang si straight jpeg.

somehow, if I was given a chance to avail a decent camera, I'll go for canon mirrorless series. No more questions asked.

im not selling the idea pero ako din id stick with canons kasi madaling humanap ng EF-S lenses sa 2nd hand market(provided that you already have an adapter). you can start with the m3 pero if you have the budget, go for the m50 - 4k video and 5 axis in-camera stabilizer, sounds sweet to me.

Hi Ja. So what I've heard about AF not working, there is a solution for that. You need to check first what's happening. Check first which part is affected. (creative zone modes or basic mode.)
Then do the following:
1. Reset the camera, remove all settings and go back to factory settings. (remove the lens and just put a cap on it.)
2. Re-install firmware.
3. Once re-installation is done, try to put some lens.
4. Test test test.

If nothing works, then the camera is junk.

*note:
It is risky to buy something that has issues since the suggested fix from manufacturer is 50/50. However, still worth a try if you like risky things.

 :-D

Pero remind ko lang, konting dagdag lang you can get a 600d na din for like 11k - 14k na gumagana naman AF. May nakita ako now lang sa FB Marketplace 11k..

Saan mo ba gagamitin?  :)

Thanks sa responde hehe. Di ko na kinuha buti nalang. Pero may ka-deal ako ngayon na 600D 2 lenses(50mm and tamron *forgot*) included, no issue bukod sa rubber cover ng battery for 11k. Oks na ba ito?

Gusto ko lang mag try ng videography. Hobby lang. :D

same question hahaha

iniisip ko upgrading yung seller. yung tamron is probably an all-rounder zoom lens. kung 17-50 2.8 yun, dun pa lang good deal na sya. yung 50mm is probably a 2nd gen na medyo maingay yung motor, not good for video. kung madaming pinagdaanan yung cam na events, photoshoots, malamang high shutter count na yan. pag lagpas 70k clicks, pass na ko dyan.

plus the 17-50 2.8 is not so much a wow lens. utility normal shots good for events.

also, the canon 50mm 1.8 is 2nd gen. it has a noisy motor that cannot be used for video lalo na pag vlogger ka. tama si Nico, the tamron lens is old. meron nyan sa tabi tabi ng hidalgo mga 1.3k na fully functioning.

9.5k papayag ako dyan
