Formal lessons/Self taught?

it won't hurt to get formal lessons cuz you can only learn so much on your own. just so you can be guided. I'm not a teacher or anything. I just learned a lot when I took supplemental lessons after more than a decade of drumming. it helped me develop my skill and playing more

I'm self-taught during my entire elementary and high school days. When I went to college, I was accepted in the U.P. Conservatory (percussion major). This is where I learned all the theories etc.

Sadly, Di ko natapos, tinamad na because I was hooked up with computer music. Got some "rakets" involving computer music, gusto ko work na agad.

But 'til now, lahat ng napag aralan ko formally sa U.P. e nagagamit ko. I can sight-read music sheets, I can write music scores, chord progressions, inversions, andaming benefits. MAS MAGANDA KUNG MAY FORMAL LESSONS TALAGA.

just to share lang na tuto ako mag drums arround 1st year highschool 14yrsold,
i started playing on snare and simple 8beats on drum set, self taught ako mga idol inspired by watching endless oldskul bands from beatles to lynard skynard,
rock n roll to heavy metal etc. pero im not saying na magaling ako.

now im already 22yrs old minsan may drum sessions kami ng ibang drumer d2 samen an 18yr old drummer can kick my butt out of the drum set because of my own flaws. i cant make a good ghost notes. im poor at cymbal works.

but i can rate my self on the middle but not on the point that i know all.

im happy when im learning something new and thats a fulfilment.
challenge kasi i need to learn it without anyones help, but may reference like youtube.

ive been into different band now already, lasting for months i personally leave because of personal work reasons but as they give out feedbacks out of my drum compositions their not super duper impress. but its just within what they need.

- learning is an never ending road as they say.

i know someone locally, my friend Paul (KnK) isang beses nung doon ako nag-almusal sa tapsihan nila, natanong ko lang bigla kung pano ba siya natuto mag-drums, it was all self-taught, practice lang ng practice, rudiments.. yun.

so anyway - ako rin self taught. back in 2005 nung student pa ako, instead of going to school, dun ako tumatambay sa studio ng friend ko, walang nagjajam masyado kaya sinamantala ko na mag-drums ng mag-drums hahaha. libre pa at laging may inuman. heheh! ayun! 

btw.. di na ako naka-graduate ng college dahil dun. hahaha. peace!

agree ako bro. actually maganda yung self taught, kasi hindi mo alam kung kailan ka na ba marunong o magaling. you always try to discover something new

pero sa palagay ko Gusto ko pa magconservatory kasi syempre, along the way dun sa pagaaral mo, baka may technique or kung ano ka mang nakuha na maaaring harmful pala... at least macocorrect pa yun

Self taught din ako mga brader. wala kasi akong pera pang formal lesson. kung may libre sana jan... haha! madami kasi talagang advantages pag may drum teacher ka, one thing dun, mas direct ang learning mo...meaning, tanong-sagot agad...isa pa dun, complicated grooves can be easier to understand kasi kaya break down yun ng teacher mo sayo na hindi ka mababaliw ng husto at napakadami pang iba.

pero syempre parang give and take yan...nasa absorption din siguro yan ng student at nasa pag simplify ng teacher mo.  Maganda din naman maging self taught basta ikaw mismo, you give time on your drumming at open minded ka din. Take time on listening to different genres, other drummers at syempre, dapat ikaw din mismo, naghahanap ng concepts at gumagawa ng theories of your own to make your drumming much enjoyable and easier. Wala naman tama at mali sa drumming hangga't ikaw mismo ang nagsabi na sa sarili mo na mali yung ginagawa mo. It really doesn't matter how you start, what matters most is how you end.
