It won't fit in our condo kasi e.

I also don't have a drumkit at home right now.  I've talked about this issue of mine a few times in my blog.  Like what I said there, I've been having this itch to practice.  Andami ko kasing research materials right now and stuff that I want to work on and improve.  Wala lang akong kit para i-work out ang mga applications and materials na na-gather ko.

Drummers are like athletes too.  Dapat may constant workout and practices tayo para ma-maintain natin ang drumming natin in great condition.  And because I don't have a drumset at home, I don't have a normal practice routine right now.

Thankfully, I often have gigs.  Kaya hindi nawawala ang fire ko.  And to keep my fire burning, I constantly motivate myself by not stopping on my research, on reading Modern Drummer, on listening to plenty of music...  And this is my everyday routine. As much as possible, I want to add something to my bag of tricks everyday.  Even the little things and a few new info for knowledge's sake counts.

And I also work on my practice pad.  At least even if I don't have a kit at home, I'm able to work on my hands and keep them burning.

I've sold my kit last year, so, drumset-less ren ako.. hehehe.. practice routines even without the kit? hmmm... i sit on our sofa and practice my hand work on sticks.. how? our sofa's hand rest Uphosltered tska syempre mei foam sa loob.. wala gaanong bounce pero ok lang, workout!  And for foot work, I grab a chair, haharap sa dingding, i position the pedals facing the walls, (good thing mei base plate for stability kahit hindi nakakabit sa BD) didikitan yun wall ng either styropor, mousepad, or anything that can imitate the feel of a BD.. then ayun na.. foot work... Huhuhu..  :-( then minsan, plug my mp4 on my ear, listen to the music then, sabayan ko.. can't use my snare for practice here.. maingay at wala akong stand.. and para sa real feel practice, i bring my gear at our school band room.. and practice there halos araw araw.. kaya kahit papano naman, nakakapalo paren ako..

cheers!!!

hmmm i now have 2 kits but i still know how it feels of "not having a drum kit at home". its because im never home so i dont feel like having them at all. maybe my post is OT because its "not having a drummer at home".

i practice exercises mostly at the office with no pedals and no sticks. here's how

- open browser
- login to metronomeonline.com
- select bpm target for the day
- open another browser and look for an exercise (its afro-cuban patterns lately)
- memorize pattern
- close eyes
- bang away on my chair lightly so as not to disturb my co-workers
- 30 mins minimum every lunch break

May parang yamaha school of music dun. chikahin mo yung mga drum instructors. Mga Pinoy naman sila at mababait. Baka pwede ka makipractice dun. Yosi lang naman katapat nun. hehehe

Nagjamming kami ni Vic dun nung nandun kami last December e.

first of all, maraming salamat for this thread...

Hehehehe ako ang taong walang kit for a very very long time na, alam yan ng mga kakilala ko. Alam mo rin yun Jun diba... Anyway, like what they say "Once a Drummer, Always a Drummer". Never stop, practice pads lang ok na yun, just imagine... It shouldnt stop you from making music pre... Improvise... Dont let go of the craft pre, kaya mo yan, ako nga nakaya ko, ikaw pa...

Kaya ang ginagawa ko e practice sa pamamagitan ng cymbal stand-mounted practice pad (as hihats/ride) at yung drum throne ko (as snare).

Ako rin may kit sa house pero I can't play with it. I usually get home from work at 8:30pm. Since patulog na baby ko at that time, I won't be able to practice. On weekends naman, it's household chores day. Bago pa lang ako papalo e mapapalo na ako ng wife ko because we have to do laundry and other stuff  Wala na lang akong magawa kundi titigan yung set ko. Di siya laspag kasi di siya magamit  :|

Hey, ok lng mawala ang FIRE at maging AIR. ang mahalaga huwag tuluyang mawala ang AIR. AIR is a very essential element of FIRE.

It amazes me that some drummers actually don't have drumkits at home but still turn-out to be very good drummers! It amazes me coz I started drumming when I dad bought my sister a drumkit... and practicing everyday! And to see it grow bigger and bigger just motivates me more... but then drummers without kits can't do that right? but still they have that passion for drumming inside of them.... simply amazing! there's this girl I met... (drummer siya ng band ng GF ko...) No doubt ung tugtugan nila... nagpaturo siya sakin ng mga palo ni Adrian young... asteeg! she just watched me play those no doubt songs a few times tapos nakukuha niya agad and she never had a kit in the first place... talagang natuto lang siya inside studios... tapos inabutan ko siya ng cd ng P.O.T sabi ko sa kanya pagaralan niya ung mga palo ni Harley Alarcon... waw! ngayon nagagawa na niya ung iba! just by listening to the CD! and again... SHE DOESN'T HAVE A KIT! Amazing!

My Master, Reggie Tamayo doesn't have a drum set. I asked him once about it and he told me that first he'd study the songs by ear and do air drums. He then polishes it when he goes to the studio to rehearse. He's also an equally accomplished guitar player.

Well, Bagets has his reasons.  He's selling his kit because he and his family just moved to a new home, and he needs the money for renovating and refurnishing the place.  And yeah, Bagets is quite an eccentric guy.  :-D

 Wow! You guys make me feel soooo lucky! This reminds me of the old days when I developed my passion for drumming...Nag start ako mag drums ng walang sariling gamit, nakikipalo lang! Encylopeadia at hita ang practice pad ko!...until Club Dredd days,1997(after 6 years) meron na akong 1  piccolo snare,1 China boy,at Lazer double pedal, kaya drummer na ang dating ko nun pag may gig!  :-D

Eto naman story ko.

The last time I owned a Kit was when im 20yo. so its been 11 years na ... na wala akong sariling drums. hehehe lumabas tunay na edad ko. Anyway...after leaving my band kasi naging masyado akong career oriented... work work work work. BTW i worked ABSCBN pla. After nun... wala na uli :( :(

Since i started mastering the craft of sound recording/engineering di ko na rin gaano hinahanap hanap yung pag palo....... pero lately.... eto na naman yung itch ko to have my own kit kasi playing drums lang talaga ako nag excel at siguro eto lang talaga ang musical instrument na bagay sakin hehehe. Siguro once matapos ang house ko coz its only 75% finish at malagyan ko na ng isang music room w/in the year ... thats the time na bibili ako ng Kit. :)

Nung una meron lang akong sticks, tapos nung 2004 umasenso ng kaunti, nagkaroon ng double pedals, tapos nung January '08 nkabili ako ng Joey jordison snare, ngayon i'm on a hunt for cymbals. Nagbabanda kasi ako eh, inuuna ko yung mga kailangan talaga kasi alam niyo naman pag drums sa mga bar, minsan lang kayo mkagamit ng drums na ayos talaga, most of the time may topak yung gagamitin niyo kya ako, I'd rather invest on the things that i would be needing when i play on gigs..

gaganahan kapa bang bumili?

plano ko, from my baon php50 a day, ndi ko gagastusin yun.

Ako kasi walang kit talaga, but when i first sat behind a drum kit I already had the "it" factor to be a drummer, dun pa lang sabi ko sa sarili ko na ito yung special gift na binigay sakin ng diyos, up until now na wala akong kit, some of my friends still can't believe that i continue to improve even without one...

Then when I have the chance to play, doun ko ginagaya yung mga naririnig ko.

example.
1 month wala ako sa bahay. I listen to TOTO and memorize the beats. Then pag uwi ko, duon ko sya bubuohin.

So even when I am away from my drum, I practice my mind to play. Kasi WHAT THE MIND CAN CONCEIVE, THE BODY CAN ACHIEVE. << PHARMATON VITAMINS  :-D

Actually, playing drum is more of Mind naman hindi body.

Ako rin, natutuko ako magdrums nung 1st year ako(w/o lessons or any teachings). Because of my passion kaya ako natuto,
my heart is in the drums eh dahil sa mga Salbakuta na yan, nahiligan ko yung drums (grade 3) ako nun.  haha.

then I learn was teach with 3-5 sessions from our drummer w/o a formal study(when I was sophomore).
ngayon, Senior na ako sa school namin at nagagamit ko na ito for praise and worship, special events and many occasions because of my passion.

My drum set has been in the bodega since the mid 90's. I guess this qualifies me as "walang drums" :-) But I've been invited to a few gigs this year, and have had to deal with crappy drums in clubs. I checked out what my drummer friends consider "must-haves". These are usually pedals, cymbals, and snares. My cymbals were still in good shape, so no problem. Then a friend bought me a pedal for my birthday. Finally, I partially restored my snare. So I have all I need right now. I want to buy a nice cymbal stand next because most bars have only 2 stands, and I've got 3 cymbals.

For practice, I have a 6" practice pad that I can carry wherever I go, and I set up my pedal against a piece of wood under my work table at home. I wasn't so big on rudiments when I was younger, so I'm catching up on it now.

I got a gig on the 30th, so its back to practice for me.

i have a confession...

i'm 32 years old, been playing drums for half of my life and have never owned a kit.  used to own two cymbals, but had to sell the ride when i needed some cash.  di ko rin kasi masyadong ginagamit.  so maliit na crash na lang ang drum gear ko...and of course, several pairs of sticks...

Mininum of 1 to 1 1/2 hour per day. Meron akong banda before kaya nagagamit ko yung pinagprapractice ko. Tapos after a few years, nakabili rin ako ng drum kit.

I built this yesterday, finished painting today... a 5 piece drum practice pad, the snare will be my real snare with a silencer... its a 6 piece :D made of 1 1/4 pvc, 5/8 ply wood, rubber matting, the one they use as flooring on some jeepneys. if anyone knows where I can find good gum rubber sheets, I'd appreciate it.
the "tom" pads can be removed I dunno for what reason but they can be, :D

pics:
testing how it would look, the pads are 10" diameter btw.

bass pad added, and tom "mounts" added to pads

finished painting, taken just 15 minutes ago:
at first I thought pvc wouldn't hold but, to my surprise its holding well, saved me more than 1.5k than using steel pipes :D

over all cost, roughly 1.5k

Ever since na natutuo ako magdrums eh wala pa akong kit. haha. :-D

May mga routines akong ginagawa:
1. Listen to different type of music (In this way, mas nakakapag focus ako sa music na pinapakinggan ko.)

What I do, i imagine myself na may drum kit ako. Hahaha. Sige lang, I enjoy it. Passion ang pagiging isang musikero. :) Waiting for or before December, maka bili ng drum kit na around 9K - 11K. Practice lang, atleast may libangan. Diba?

My brother's friend used to practice with his "timba" drumset. Yung cymbals niya eh walis tingting.

same here...nasira ko sofa sa bahay kakapalo stapler pa ginagawa ko pedal dati...

sir anong klaseng stapler yan.. interesting ah.

ganun din kasi ung ginawa ko dati eh until sa bumili na ako ng practice pad tlga sa mga music stores, they really help out sa pag practice ng rudiments. hope that helps  :)

Practice pad pa rin sir and a good quality pair of sticks. Treat it as an investment na lang kung gusto mo na talagang mag drums at hindi na mag gitara. Don't get me wrong, hindi naman sa high end gears vs. technique ito. Mas gaganahan ka lang talaga mag ensayo at gamitin if you have the right equipment. After all, nag invest ka na rin.

thanks sa mga input nyo mga sir.  :-D  I found some basic rudiments on youtube.  like: R-right L-left eg: R1 L2 L3 R4 then L1 R2 R3 L4 repeat with same accent to build speed and accuracy  tapos put accent daw sa first note then same accent on note 2,3,4.. then after mastering the accent on the first note move to the 2nd note and so on.. will i benefit from practicing this? will this improve my playing when i get to play on real drums? thank you mga sirs

Sakto lang. But it would be much beneficial if you practice or study it with someone who's actually there for you. Not necessarily a drum teacher but at least a friend or someone you know who knows how to play drums. One disadvantage of learning on some videos "only" online is that nobody would tell you if you're doing it right or wrong. If the technique is good enough or still needs improvement. Yes you're capturing ideas but that's not enough. Nobody will correct you. Sometimes you'll feel like you're doing good but in reality you're not. I'm not pulling you down sir or anything, this is just an honest statement. You need someone who would help you and show you how to nail it properly. Remember sir, it's hard to change a bad habit once you get used to it. Good luck!

Natumbok ni sir! :)
It's also good to record yourself. Sound wise and video wise to see and hear you execution.

I have to agree with this. +sobrang daming +1 :|

Pwede mo rin gamitin yung mouse pad as improvise drum pad. Double it para mas maganda yung bounce. Or raketa ng table tennis. Practice lang ng different strokes. And muscle memory.  :-D

tuloy mo lang sir, nagsimula ako a pair of "pamanang sticks" lang gamit ko.
ginawa ko is nood youtube, mga basic beats muna , 4/4  for me is a good foundation.

tapos I started listening and watching nung mga videos nung mga live performances pero yung mga madadali muna. tapos sa bahay, wala din ako practice pad, pero I am using yung mga hard cover books. para pag pasok sa studio, application na.

tuloy lang sir, rock on :D

BAM! sticking practice!
THIS!! White pages (people listing), mas makapal!

Sabi nga sakin dati, when you can make a single drum sound like you're playing a whole kit, yun na.

Ganyan din ako nagpractice for YEARS bago ko nakuha yung drums ko last last year lang  :-o

Ever since na natutuo ako magdrums eh wala pa akong kit. haha. :-D

May mga routines akong ginagawa:
1. Listen to different type of music (In this way, mas nakakapag focus ako sa music na pinapakinggan ko.)
3. Weekend practice sa church. This time, naaapply ko na yung mga ginawa ko nung weekdays.
4. Watch Instructional videos and drum covers. :) Feeds my appetite.  :-D

Actively seeking drum clinics tsaka kapalan pes na kausapin bawat drummer na makakasalamuha whether tumugtog or what.
