Pick up shifting on strat
« on: March 11, 2006, 01:24:05 PM »
Napanood ko yung isang live video ni S.R.V.. Ive noticed na di sya nag shishift ng pickup. Laging naka set sa neck yung switch nya. (or hindi ko lng napansin) maybe most of the time neck ang gamit nya sa clean and dirty sound.  What are your comments on this? may gumagamit b sa inyo ng tecniq na ganto? kwentuhan tayo.  :D

Mas preferred ko ang neck pup kasi mellowed-out ang tone ng guitar doon, mas transparent and mas malakas kasi ang string vibrations sa area na yun.

he does use the neck pup more often than the bridge...pero nagpapalit pa rin sya sometimes on some songs... cguro dahil harsh and tunog ng texas specials sa bridge na kelangan mo lagi i-roll off yung tone knob...

kaya hanga ako ke EJ, kasi almost exclusively bridge pup ang gamit nya pero his tone does not sound brittle and bright...

useable ang bridge pup ng strats...make sure lang na timplado yung tone knob mo...kaya lang kung yung mga vintage series or yung mga sinaunang strats, di naka wire yung bridge pup sa tone knobs, but that is easy to mod naman.

sonnyray, i have a strat. at hindi nga naka wire yung bridge pick up sa tone control. Pano b yung pag mod dun? my kailangan bang isacrifice na pick up or lahat sila e naka wire sa mga tone control?

Another question: ano pa ang nawawala bukod sa hum kapag nag coil-split ka? (i mean pag nasa gitna ng 2 single coil yung switch mo)

eto yung link ng mga different wiring diagrams...check for the modern ones.. madali lang naman yung mod na to, you dont even need an extra wire to get it done.

as for yung no hum sa 2&4 positions, this is only true kung yung middle pup mo is RW/RP(reverse wound/reverse polarity), so kung hindi din lang RW/RP yung mid pup mo, me hum ka pa rin...

strat user here.
i usually use the neck for light OD settings.
everything else fall in the bridge position where my dirt peds are tuned such that the tone is not too thin.

i also rewired my tone pots where one controls the neck while the other controls the bridge.

mAhilig ako kumambyo from neck to bridge , minsan depende sa mood ko , take Gabe Ascalons version of 'A taste of honey" you can even hear the pickup selector when he switches from neck to bridge , biglang bumubuka pag nasa bridge pickup na , nakakatuwa ;)
Take it easy , but take it.

i usually use the neck-mid position for clean rhythms and the neck pickup for solos.  if i want more bite, i use the mid-bridge position since the bridge pickup is too harsh for my taste.  the 2nd tone control is for the mid pickup, which i turn down to a little more than half.

i might go for the bridge pickup tone knob mod but not at the moment.   :-)

I'm curious... does he still play his version these days? Haven't heard/watched him play since the '70's...

Re Gabe Ascalon's version of A Taste Of Honey- that was a real 1959 Les Paul Custom into a Fender Bassman head and separate cab with  Jensen 12's. No pedals, but everything on "10". the flutey sound in the middle of the 2nd solo is the neck pickup with the tone rolled off. Trivia coming from Sam Sen years ago. Sam was the Bassist for their band Destiny with Richie Quirino on drums. Performed live on the JQ special in 1974
