Which Linux distro?
« on: October 30, 2009, 04:00:38 PM »
my dad was given an old toshiba satellite 2400 series (1.6 Ghz, 256 RAM, 30 GB hd).  mejo jurassic, yeah.

im thinking of installing a linux OS since gagamitin to mostly for typing, downloading mp3's, viewing websites (wirelessly with a us robotics turbo pc card), chatting on YM and skype, using a software bible, listening to music and watching movies :)

which linux distro would you recommend, yung pang senior citizen, sobrang daling gamitin o mejo malapit sa windows yung design?  and hopefully mejo marami-raming drivers na included.

the reason why im thinking of going linux is that they usually have problems with their computers when connecting to the net.  malamang virus, malamang spyware, that sort of thing. so then they come back to me for tech support, LOL.  it would be nice to have a head ache free OS for a change :)  one that doesn't really change every time you connect to the net.

there's:

Linux Mint http://www.linuxmint.com/

Xubuntu is also a great choice.

Then there's also OpenSUSE.

ubuntu 9.04. works decently on an old pentium 4 circa 2003.

edit: oh wait, still figuring out the audio and video codecs/drivers.

Also try Slackware and Mandriva.

Another user-friendly derivative: PCLinuxOS

Xubuntu is also a great choice.

I'd prefer Lubuntu. XFCE sucks...
