great drum tones recorded
« on: February 24, 2007, 01:18:31 PM »
I believe that the tones come from the player, gear, mics, placement of mics, and the room.

so which recording gives out an excellent drum tone?

1.  all Led Zep albums
2.  Joe Satriani's Extremist (Greg Bissonette) and Red Album (Manu Katche).
3.  Stone Temple Pilots' Core (Eric Kretz)
4.  Pearl Jam's VS (Dave Abbruzesse)
5.  Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Chad)
6.  Dave Weckl on Transition
7.  Grip Inc. (Dave Lombardo)
8.  Mr. Big - any (Pat Torpey)
9.  Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales and Mercury Falling (Vinnie Colaiuta)
10.  The Breed (Harley Alarcon)

forgive me, I didn't memorize the producers and engineers.

so what's your top ten favorite?

Oh yeah!  I never heard anything as crisp and as crystal clear as Mike Portnoy's drum tracks on their Awake album.  You can hear every little detail and dynamics from it.  It's my favorite Dream Theater album.

Haven't checked out Attention Deficit yet.  Ma-download nga...  :-D

Ung "burn" ni Tina Arena I think has one of the tightest drums ever recorded.

Is that Donati behind the set?

I was just wondering... Simon Philips is really known for great recorded drum tones.  But how come as a producer for Planet X's Moonbabies, the drums were quite open (the toms particularly)?  Is that the way Virgil wants it?
