haha sometimes it is, but i guess you can approach your musicstore and ask for those, i dont know how they do it manila, but customer service in guitarcenter is good for me, if im missing tools(hex keys) for guitars ill just ask for those and they'll give them for free

silica gels had helped keep my guitars from getting rust, i think it works to some extent depending on the level of humidity in Ur area.

Yep, they come in small crystals though so its not really advisable to tear and open the packets.

If U got those blue or pink silica gels in clear plastic packs, U only have to poke some pin holes into the plastic pack to activate it. Careful not to create holes large enough for the silica gel crystals to be scattered outside the plastic pack.

those blue ones and the pink ones are one and the same. i have lots of those. they should look like round bbs not cracked like those found in packets.

these "blue" and "pink" ones are deep violet when they come "New" and turn to blue, pink and white depending on the amount of moisture that it already absorbed.

the good thing with the colored ones is you can heat them using a non stick pan (easier to roll them around)  and they'll turn back to Deep Violet. you can use them again and again. as long as buo sila (bilog, like nerds candy) they will be very efficient.

just don't use your pan for food. i have a dedicated pan for reheating my silica gel.

you can also do the microwave method. pero noon kasi wala kaming microwave. and i wasn't into guitars before but electronics.

you can also create your own "dry box"

get a few of those silica gel, stuff them in a thin sock, place it inside a glad zip lock with your expensive gadget. you can also include a humidity gauge. national bookstore use to sell rulers with those gauges. this is what i did sa mga gadgets na naiwan ko sa pinas,

pag tumataas ang humidity (change in the needle mark) all our maid does is get the sock out, and heat the beads. this beats those thousand peso container being sold in department stores. (except those electrical dehumidifiers na malalaki)

if you can find those tupperwares with rubber seals, it can also function as a dry box but its kinda hard to find them, specially yung mga malalaki...cheaper way is to use ziplocks. and put them in a plastic box

specialty camera stores should have those silica gels. i haven't tried asking along Hidalgo St., Quiapo but they should have those.
In my last trip to the philippines, i was able to buy a few humidity gauges sa camera store. i use them in my make shift dry boxes.

But I suggest don't leave these packs in your cases for long periods of time. Sa experience ko nagdry up yun rosewood fretboard ng LP ko and had to spend more for fb restoration. :(

i think maybe its best to invest in a humidity gauge for your room or kung saan nilalagay yung mga instruments and make the necessary adjustments.

Asbestos? It's a flame retardant. It's silica gel, not asbestos.

dati kasi hindi ako gmgamit nung silica gel, tapos mejo pawisin ung kamay ko pag nag`ggitara.. before punas`punas lang OK na, but the next time na ggmitin ko ung gtara.. sobrang evident pa din ung rust sa string.. but after reading this thread, I tried using it as well and results are of course, sobrang na`minimize ung rust.. the silica gel proved worthy of praise..

Cool. I thought taliwas ang naexperience mo.  Pero take note that time will come when your silica gels have absorbed so much moisture na hindi na nila kayang mag-absorb pa. What they will do is release those moisture na. So ayun, be weary about them and replace them from time to time.  :-)

String cleaning? I use Big Bends G-string wipes.

Fast Fret, some Dunlops, D'Andrea string cleaner, etc..
If you want to try out something new and cool, The String Cleaner might be a good one.  :-)

Most aftermarket string cleaners come with their own "pamunas" kumbaga. There are some siguro na de-spray, you can use a regular cotton cloth for that.

Just for info, may kasamang silica gel sa mga pakete ng rotosound strings.

OT: sarap ng rotosound yellow strings, the best sounding strings so far for me.
