Title: The semi hollow/hollowbody/jazzbox thread
Post by: ioffendpeople on March 16, 2007, 11:40:50 AM
Wow, is it just me or is the search function on philmusic busted?
Anyway, I don't think there was a thread like this before.
At the moment, I'm saving up some cash to get an Ibanez AS73...what won me over was the way the sound resonates in the semi-hollow body. Damn!
For as long as I can remember, I've always liked the way semi-hollow guitars looked, especially Gretsches and Gibsons. Post stories, pictures, and anything else you might have of them here! 8-)

ako rin, saving up to buy myself an ibanez talman artcore series.. hirap lang maghanap kc tumigil na pagmamanufacture ng gantong gitara...
...will have one soon....still looking around for that perfect ES335.
I currently have a cheap Oscar Scmidt OE30 that needs a pickup change, and maybe an aluminum tailpiece upgrade. Damn I want some sweet pickups.
I do wanna have:
- A Gibby ES335 Block - A Guild X-175 - A Gretsch Country Gentleman - An Epi Casino - A Rick 360 - A G&L ASAT Semi-hollow
Masarap mangarap...Pero mas masarap pag natupad.
thats cool. don't want all that ...just one....one perfect Gibby ES335 and a really gorgeous Fuchs ODS50 SLX head.

Beatiful collection...... i especially like the Zephyr......... and the tele..... heck, ALL of 'em........ 8-) 8-) 8-)

Ps. What does the Zephyr sound like? is it true that the mini humbuckers can sound just as soulful as full humbuckers? I don't have a reference tone kasi.......

The Tele Thinline looks sweet. Can anybody comment on the tone and if they've tried one with a neck humbucker. Think I saw one at Yupangco along Buendia a few weeks ago...

I like playing the semi and hollow bodies. They are lighter and have some sort of a mojo in them. The only problem, which is specifically very true with the hollow bodies, is they are very prone to feedback especially in high gain situations.
Not vintage, mainly new, here are some of my semi & hollowbody guitars I gig with (pictures are rehashed as well).
Ric 330 6 string (not used that much) (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e139/mikenpe/MikesCanonA010.jpg) Epiphone Alleykat with Gibson pups (nice woody tone) (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e139/mikenpe/MikesNikon3A2guitars113.jpg) Epiphone Casino Elite (The Beatles Magic, nice) (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e139/mikenpe/MikesNikon3A2guitars104.jpg) Epiphone Casino MIK with Bigsby type Vibrato (Lacks a bit of brightness) (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e139/mikenpe/48d5b6a8.jpg) Gretsch 6122-1962 Re-Issue (Big Mojo, a little heavy) (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e139/mikenpe/MikesCanonA004.jpg)
Thanks for viewing.

Wow!!! Mike, ganda ng Beatles Casino!!!! very tasteful..... And that Rickenbacker is bitchin'!!!!
From the serial number (No. 57184) and following the description i got from a site which i found on the net, i have been able to date this guitar to 1948......
The label inside (quite difficult to photograph, unfortunately) identifies this guitar as having been made in New York, USA...... quite a few years before Epiphone was sold to Gibson and the factory moved........
An Epiphone Blackstone archtop....... This one has a 16" body..........
Chum
Heeey -- the Blackstone ended up with you!! Good going chum! I saw/played that guitar in '95 or '96 when Arie brought it to a studio where we were recording, but I hesitated. When I looked for it shortly after, wala na! Nice to see it ended up with you.
Lovely old archtop. Doc A. did good work on it. If I remember correctly, it's got some fretwork done on it, a new nut, and a repaired/refashioned bridge among other things. Very cool guitar with a lot of mojo. :-D

@ mahavishnu
ei thanks!
that's the trisound switch for the neck pickup which gives you 3 choices: 1. single coil 2. parallel or 3. series humbucker
thanks!

Hi Lahed....
When I got this guitar years ago, the owner wanted extra cash for the pickup, which was an old DeArmond (might have a Rhythm Chief model, I forget)..... As I was still a student at that time, I could not afford to fork over the extra P3k he wanted, so I bought the guitar sans the pickup.... I am planning to have a mini-humbucker installed, I'm still saving up for either a Kent Armstrong, or maybe a Benedetto (which is going to cost me an arm and a leg :-D :-D).....

Interesting, Bryan.... How's the sound on the Benedetto pickup? Also interested in the Golden Age's sound..... Are they markedly different?
The Benedetto sounds both fuller and clearer than the stock Artcore pickups. It takes away some of the boxy tone of the smaller-body AG, which made the stock pickups sound muddy at some settings. It's very nice through my Roland Jazz 40.
The vintage Gibson bridge pickup I hardly use. It's just there because the Benedetto is gold, and I didn't want mismatched pickups. I got it for cheap anyways. :-D
The Golden Ages are nice, and get that overwound PAF honk alright. I don't get to rock out enough to do them justice, unfortunately.

Its Korean, Phil... Surprisingly good..... I'm planning on a pickup upgrade though, the mini humbucker on it is okay, but it could be better tonewise..... Acoustically, its a little plain as compared to my Epi Blackstone, which has a gorgeous acoustic tone.... But its loud enough so that you can stick a mic in front of it and go..... The neck on the Regent also feels smaller, more modern; my Blackstone has a chunky, soft V neck.....

just got this from dyugs <restored by him>. a harmony monterey acoustic turned into a jazz guitar.
I wanted a jazz guitar for so long kaya nung nakita ko to sunggab agad. nothing much pero i'm satisfied with it so far. gusto ko lang upgrade hardware and this is all set.
simula na to ng hollowbody fetish. hehe.
patulong naman hanap hardware o? tailpiece and bridge sana hanap ko, then tuners ayus nako. :-D

I actually tried this out last week when he dropped by our office. Decided against buying it, for various reasons.
Good to hear it's found a new home.

Okey sound nya. maybe some upgrades will do. di siya ganun ka-resonant pero okey naman kapag amplified. Acoustic talaga kasi siya turned to a jazz guit.
it's a rough gem. dami pde ayusin. Ü.
for the price kasi sulit na siya plus it's a world war II era guitar so i expected much flaws.. pero i was surprised to find only a few minor issues.
i guess kaya hindi siya appealing sa iba is because of the neck. it's really thick and would feel really weird if you're used to more modern necks. i love it though. heheh
patulong hanap hardware! heheh.

heheh. sure. sige try ko record sa audio ng raw sa pc. iba nga lang palalaruin ko. heheh. without the pickups this sounds good but not so resonant. acoustic guitar kasi to dati. di na original hardware.
pero gusto ko yung kahoy. the neck needs some getting used to though. medyo kakaiba. haha. makapal.

For me, it's like the difference of a transistor amp to tube amp. you have to hear it for yourself. solid top ung akin, compare mo ung sound ng gitara ko sa mga ibanez demo:

walang solid top na gitara ang ibanez, maski ung mga sinature guitars laminated lahat un.
gibson l5,l4,super 400 at mga d'angelico new yorker lang ang mga solid top.
i beg to differ but its not an absolute fact that ibanez doesnt have solid top hollowbody guitars. the 1977 ibanez 2470 is solid carved top. most current production 335 even gibsons are laminated. i was just wondering if these "limited run artcores" could be an exception, thats my angle. generally solid top construction have better tone and resonance (i still dream of benedetto). i just wouldnt handle them roughly.

For me, it's like the difference of a transistor amp to tube amp. you have to hear it for yourself. solid top ung akin, compare mo ung sound ng gitara ko sa mga ibanez demo:
... too bright.
here's me playing the same tune using an ibanez artcore af86 and a lowly fender princeton (SS) amplifier.

Where you can hear all the nuance of the picking, that appeals more to me than a lot of boring jazz guitarists' tone who has a very bassy tone and bad rhythm. but that's just me...
everybody who even has a little bit of knowledge about archtops knows that d'angelico is not at all comparable to some ibanez jazz guitar model!

like you said, it's a matter of personal taste. although traditional jazz guitar favors a dull, warm tone. not bright.
mic and a (humming) solidstate amp gamit din ko.

Nice that you liked it, i'm going more for a George Benson or Johnny Smith tone (i have to have a better amp first).
As much as I worship Pat Metheny, I don't really like his tone on his archtop, i don't understand why he always turn the tone control off, i never do that, u loose a lot of sensitivity in dynamics (i thnik), i always do adjustment on the amp.
Tone is really a personal issue, what's more important is that YOU know what you want!

sir bluebossa, in all his recordings that i've heard, jim hall always sounded warm. which jim hall album did you have in mind?
william, to nail the early benson tone, i suggest you roll down he treble and boost the mids instead. not too much treble unless you want your guitar to sound like a tin can.

Pre napansin ko hindi naman 100% consistent ang tone ng mga gitarista eh, iba iba rin ng konti bawat concert, I even have a recording of wes with a bright tone (bright enough for jazz, if you know what I mean), meron pa ko dito old george benson playing a slightly distorted tone, listen to Johnny Smith mataba ung tone pero hindi muddy.
It's not as easy as only having one set-up to get the tone you want, especially if you play in different areas. Nung sa open stage once, walang magandang amp, I used bbpreamp as a boost, ok na ok hindi nag ffeedback ung jazz guitar.
Gusto ko rin naman ung mga bagong tone ni george benson eh like this:
feature=PlayList&p=2C03E605B3E1A474&index=6
Pero like I said iba iba rin bawat concert.
This guitar sounds like tin can man! hahahahha:
amp;feature=related but of course I have nothing against Joe Pass, he's one of my greatest inspiration.

Joe Pass always plays great but that guitar sounds just HORRIBLE, it's not bright... there's a difference... it just sounds really bad hahahahah :-D (at least in my ear)
My most favorite Pat Metheny tone on his archtop:

try plugs http://dougsplugs.com/

Bilibid or not, nasubukan ko na i-distort ng todo yung Ibanez ko. As in super saturated distortion. Na malakasan ang volume.
Skarlet gig yon.
Infinite sustain. Parang Ted Nugent.

I need your help guys, I'm having massive ES 335 GAS dilemma.
Which should I settle for: -a cheap chinese Hamer Echotone (I won't have to sell a lot of my stuff for this) -an Aria Pro Lawsuit (I will have to sell two guitars for this) -the real deal, a gibby 335 (I will have to sell two guitars, a very nice tube half stack, and unload a lot of dough for this)
Thing is, it's ok for me to sell the two guitars (an Epi flying V and an Ibanez Artcore full hollow) just to get a 335. Also, I don't like having a lot of guitars not getting used and only acquiring dust at home. Another thing is I really like my halfstack, and is having second thoughts selling it.

@fraud Get an Epi Dot and slap on good pickups, bone nut, nickel hardware (drop fit lang ang metric sa stew mac), and an aluminum tailpiece/Bigsby, and youre all set. Good pots & electronics would be nice too. I highly recommend RS kits.
OR
Get either an Edwards or a Tokai.

some of the RJ ES copies are quite good than the hamer ES copy that i've tried. If you're willing to wait, get a good gibby.. i know it'll be worth it and i see it something that you won't sell that fast rather than the ones available here.
if you really like your amp more than having the hollowbody and V around, then settle for the aria pro, i think it's agood buy if you want something to tinker with

If resale value isnt a concern, magandang platform for customizations ang dot. Here's mine:
@stompmoko whoa, I never knew RJ had ES copies. :-o is the RJ 335 good enough?compared to an Epi dot? How much are those RJ ES copies?
@boogsy I'm a bit reluctant about Epiphones nowadays eh, feels like I might get a boob since I won't be able to test it before I buy it.
also, what do you guys think of filippo's Aria ES 335 lawsuit copy? I might try the hamer as well.
i think within the range of the hamer guitars, the RJ ES copies have two models though. i don't know how it stands up to a dot but i think a guitar with decent upgrades can do well, it's just that you have to weigh your costs :-D
try and compare the ones that you can source locally, maybe one can fit the bill before you shell out boatloads of cash

D'angelico NYL-2 vestax
There is absolutely no relation with the Koréan or chinese guitars named D'ANGELICO EXCEL that do NOT belong to the New Yorker D'Angelico line neither in the craftmanship making process, nor in the origin of manufacturing.

Semi-hollow enthusiasts,
Sino po kaya nakakabili or try na nag PRS SE Semi-hollow. Opinions/reviews naman po. Wala me sa metro manila e. Di ko mapuntahan
Gas n gas ako dun sa JB Music Website, latest arrival daw, around 45 K nga lang (medyo expansive for me).
Peace!

thnx mga bros, yes, very light and when you dial back the volume/tone, sounds like an accoustic. very resonant too. Not bad for a PRS import, quality of build is spot on. I like it mainly for versatility and weight, getting old I guess :-D

for high gain amps sir i believe semi-hollow / hollowbody guitars are really prone to feedback because the way they are built. even if you don't have a high gain amp but let's say you use high gain pedals you still get the feedback. as from sir nineworkz of the band EVEN, he uses a jazzbox as well and he uses noisegates. Pre Gating and Post Gating :) hope it helps.

Hey Bro! By NO MEANS is your Cassie an inferior guitar..I had the sunburst MIK Casino for 3 yrs before i got the Lennon, and i have to say they sound pretty much the same ( nasa settings lang ng amp ).
It still has the dove tail joint at the 16th fret, combined with P90 pickups and a full hollowbody that creates the distinct sound that is purely, and only the Casino :-)
jamming na to ng Drive my car, And your bird can sing, Day tripper! :)

Nothing complements a semi-hollow/hollow body/jazzbox more than its own hard case. The more road worn the hard case, the better (destination stickers are optional). Likewise, the more the hard case plush linings look like they came from a New Orleans brothel, the "Mojo"-er. Really badass.

There's no such thing as a semi-hallow guitar. There is, however, such a thing as a semi-hollow guitar. One look at the thread's title itself should be evidence of that.

jejemon? hehe joke
anyways, ung pagkakaiba ng tunog, kung gs2 mo tlangang malaman eh pakingan mo. we can use words here pero it wont be enough. noentheless...
ang hollowbody, parang acoustic guitar yan kaso may pickup. full hollowbodies also called jazzboxes, have the same body size of an acoustic guitar only with cutaways. the semi hollows tend to have thinner bodies. if you use an under saddle pickup or something that is installed direct to the sound board of the guitar, it will sound like an acoustic guitar.
however, unlike acoustic guitars, hollowbodies use magnetic pickups (often humbuckers as they tend to cut the high frequencies) to amplify the natural sound. the choice of pickups definitely adds color to the sound but it still is unique to the guitar. you can try and emulate the hollowbody sound with the use of a solid body, say a les paul (with PAFs) by rolling off the tone but you still wont be able that authentic 'airy' and 'woody' sound of a hollowbody.
listen to jazz records and hear the difference.

Post by: william251082 on August 25, 2010, 03:20:02 PM
This thread is for es-335 style guitar lovers. Post yours!!!
After almost a year of having my es 335, I realized that this is my main guitar, enough warmth for my tone that you can't get from solid bodies at the same time sounds REALLY great overdriven and has great rock tone too (even on some high gain settings), without the feedback problem of the average hollow-body guitar. Fits my playing style perfectly and delivering the tone that I hear in my head.
Naipost ko na rin 'to sa gear thread :-D (http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad60/piblips/CIMG2334.jpg) (http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad60/piblips/17352_1185503644343_1430822771_3046.jpg) (http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad60/piblips/17352_1185503484339_1430822771_3046.jpg) (http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad60/piblips/17352_1185503804347_1430822771_3046.jpg)

It currently has GFS Dream 90's in them :-)
Unfortunately it's not in it's best shape anymore - the strap button on one side is almost falling off (which is making the hole bigger and bigger), even more dings and scratches, lots of sweat and grime, and most of the hardware is already getting relic'd. Frets are a bit worn out too.. But he's happy with it and it has become his main guitar (originally from a lp, then flying v, to a strat then a tele)
Me and my Oscar Schmidt OE30 w/ GFS pickups (Dream 180 on the neck and Mean 90 on the bridge), CTS pots, orange caps, BAMF's organicore, pearl LP-type pickguard, and bone nut and gibson-type PL jack-in done by Elegee. Oh, and Dunlop straplocks.
Last setup by Elegee.
This thing with .11s is awesome, even with heavy, near metal stuff. Even more with the Edge type stuffs.
Feedback? Not a problem, very controllable.

hi lyle. how are you liking the guitar? rounds are fine. imho, heavy gauge strings bring out the best tones from hollowbody guitars.

very much, my friend. i'm loving the flatwounds and having second thoughts replacing the strings to rounds. but they are quite darker than rounds, in a good way naman. also heavy gauges clean up my playing. ha ha ha. its cool.
i'm quite intimidated to replace the strings of this arch top cause its my first experience with a floating bridge. i dunno how to adjust the bridge when i switch to a lighter gauge e. he he.

just replace one string at a time so the bridge doesn't move. i do believe its the truss rod which will need adjustin in case your action changes.
i have flatwounds in my ibby jazzbox - chromes yata. still haven't changed the strings though, been years na. the dead sound is perfect for my jazz tone, or what passes for such. haha!

just got this from dyugs <restored by him>. a harmony monterey acoustic turned into a jazz guitar.
but.. coming this Christmas week!! an Epiphone DOT series will arrive! i'll do some mods like put some GFS VEH pups, change the stop tail and also with roller bridge both for GFS.. and will keep her na!

Coaxing fat tones out of a guitar has never been this easy, even at low volumes. Hehe. I do plan on changing the bridge pickup soon.
By the way, does anyone here top-wrap their strings on their hollowbodies?

^^ Nice guitars bro!!! Newb question para saan yung "varitone switch"?
Another device that you occasionally see in guitars is something called a varitone. It is a rotary switch that runs the signal across one of several selectable capacitors (one position usually lacks a capacitor, and is therefore a bypass). This drops out different frequencies to give you several interesting starting points for your sound. Usually people have a 5 or 6 position switch, for example in B.B. King's "Lucille"

yup bro pede din nmn lagyan.. some B.C. Rich guitars from the 80's have varitone..
thu yung semihollow ko nadisengaged. i tried playing with my bro's varitone, with my playing style i don't really find it usefull. pero i'm thinking of tht 1 position sa varitone which makes the guitar sound like an acoustic guitar.prng lng ha..or it's just my ear..hehe i'm quite amazed..cguro yun lng yung ikakabit ko.. sa mg ngeexperiment ng diff tones,u may find it usefull.

lalambot yun strings so yun iba nagswitch from 10- 11s for a fuller sound. mababawasan din yun break angle sa saddles, less string breakage on that area and better transfer of energy to the body.
my place is quite dusty. how do you clean the insides of your semi hollow guitars? :?
plastic tube kasya sa f-hole, dami sa sm and car vacuum. DIY mo na lang sir yun connection :-)

Title: Re: The semi hollow/hollowbody/jazzbox thread

as far as my setup goes my semi hollow can handle classic rock (shredhead plus the direct drive ) gain both at 11 o clock it's heavy enough though :)
anything higher will cause feedback
although it's weird my semi hollow is less prone to feedback if i were to compare it to my telecustom

pwedeng pwede
just play with your volume knob para ma control mo yung feedback, set it to 9 or wherever then i 10 mo lang kung gusto mo mag feedback.

tamang settings lang...at paglaruan ang tone knobs at pickup positions and you'll get a handful of possibilities...

what do you mean high gain setup? technical kasi ang electric guitar at "medyo noob" pako sa mga terms about electric guitar.

I want to be a member of this thread. I need some recommendations from you guys.
I will be going to the U.S. this December and I set a budget of $500 or slightly more (damn sales tax). Will be going to the guitar stores on the west coast.
My choices so far:
1. Epi Dot 2. Epi ES-175 3. Epi Sheraton 4. Epi Riviera 5. Gretsch G5120 (if on super sale)
Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Will use the guitar for some blues, rock and 60's genre music.

maybe kasi mas madulas siya sa round wounds? i think. i want to get the joe pass sound kasi, i hope this does the trick!

Epiphone DOT gets my vote.

Will a pickguard mounting bracket for Les Paul fit the Epiphone Dot?
http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/56923-epiphone-dot-pickguard-bracket/ -this says no and the staff in Lazer I asked said no, too http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Archtop-Replacement-Pickguard-Mounting-BRACKET-Gibson-LP-335-Style-Guitars-/160706895540?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item256ae09eb4#ht_563wt_1139 but this one ,which looks like the the other LP mounting brackets online, says it can fit with the 335 style guitars

Stop tail piece where the strings are anchored or the saddles on the TOM bridge? If its the groove of the saddles, either change it with new ones, preferably brass. If all the saddles wore out evenly then just adjust the height of the tom bridge. I dont think the strings would move around much even on a bigger groove. Just my opinion

I joined this thread about 2 years ago and my RL-2 is in a restoration state, I don't know if i'm in the wrong thread but I would just like to ask if there is anyone of you who would know how to find replacement screws for my guitar. I've basically scoured Sta. Mesa, Raon, JB, RJ, Audiophile, Yamaha, Perfect Pitch and still to no avail :( Can i find these screws in the hardware shops? or if any of you guys have replacement screws i'll buy 'em :) Thanks :)

Title: Re: The semi hollow/hollowbody/jazzbox thread
Post by: carloangelomendiola on January 17, 2012, 11:32:01 AM
@ lordpogi
screws for the humbucker pickup rings and screws for the pickup adjustment.
Funny story I should say, after scouring the shops mentioned above, my tita which is just a stone's throw away from my place asked me one morning and said: "Sabi ni mama mo naghahanap ka daw ng screw?" Patingin?. And when I showed her the screws she was like " Dito samen meron niyan" And voila! Loads of screws that fit my guitar! :) Another story to add to the guitar's history! :)

I was gonna buy an AS73 2 years ago. I decided to get an AF75 instead just because walang pickguard yung AS73. :-D

yep. the Ibanez AS73 17.5k. the Hamer Echotone sa JB is 19k plus..
i was about to get one AS73 (again), but i thought, i'd get another burst like my old one and it's China made (nothing to do with it). so i decided to get the Hamer Echotone, made in Indonesia (just trying out a new made) and the colors are solid.. in fact, looks, sounds and feels great!
i would suggest, go to Audiophile at Robinson's OTIS or at MOA to check the AS73.. then try the Echotone, check the diff.

It depends kung ano tugtugan niyo bro. Pero if I were you, I'll take the Sheraton II. Yun kasi yung top of the line ng Epiphone for their semi hollow. On semi hollows, you can control more of the feedback which is occuring on high gain pedals rather than a full hollow guitar. Pero ayos din yung Casino if you're going for a full hollow sound. Bottomline is, if you want a versatile guitar, go for a semi hollow. :-D

I've only heard a sheraton once, but I liked how it can coax a tone with piano-like character. When it comes to jazz box though, ito talaga ang di ko makalimutan http://www.sadowsky.com/archtops/LS-17.html :-)

59 es335 and sheraton are almost identical in sound, the latter having more attention to detail and neck construction (5 piece neck), inlays, bindings, etc. But at some point the es335 are just so classy and cool.
Casino naman are louder unplugged, the p90's are underrated, but may not fit certain type of genres.
pm me if you want to try them :)

Mga sir's question lang.. :-D
I'm seeking advice for those semi hollow enthusiast who have tried the choices i have below. Its my first roll to try and buy a semi hollow (after a few months hopefully).. And! these are my choices.. Epiphone dot, Casino(because of the p90's), Ibanez As73 and a Hamer echotone. In terms of versatility, palayability and tone (has nice sustain, woody, sparkly and smooth) or somewhat close, also good for cleans, slightly overdriven, distorted sound and most of all affordable.. What semi hollow you prefer?
Thanks a bunch guys

Here's my number one at the moment, Prestige NYS Standard
My project guitar will be similar, but with dogeared P90s instead of soap bars, and a trapeze tailpiece instead of the stop tailpiece... I'm still deciding on a headstock shape, but I am liking that sunburst...

Help naman guys...
Recently got a Yamaha SA-500 (indonesia made) and I googled that it is a FULL HOLLOW body guitar. Would it be right if I use drive pedals for it (I have a Boss SD1, OD2 and joyo UD in my setup)? I use them at low gain settings individually but I tend to combine them for a more beefy-sounding drive. But I'm worried that the guitar is not meant for gain/OD pedals :? and you hollow body might think I'm stupid for doing so .
your thoughts?

no pics yet. (i dont even know how to put one up here. hehe.) it was a white one, cream binding(body & neck), chrome hardware, very basic look IMO. got it for around 6 grand. regular price was around 12k. kind of a steal deal. i was actually deciding between that and a tele. knowing i wont easily find a cheap used 335 copy, i went for it. i'm actually trying to make up my mind if i should change the hardware into gold or black ones. i guess i should change the PUPs first. any suggestions? i'd like one that can be split. is it even practical/possible on a semi?

Would you treat full hollow body guitars as acoustic guitars? Straight to amp lang ba talaga sila dapat?

I think you can use overdrive/distortion on low gain settings sa full hollow. Think of The Beatles with their Epiphone Casinos. You can use other pedals naman like delay, reverb, etc. Gaya ng ginagawa ng mga rockabilly players with their full hollow Gretsch for reference.

im pretty sure they have guitar pickups in those so plug them to any pedals or guitar amp. if it's piezo equip, then treat it as an acoustic, use a preamp or plug it in an acoustic amp

I was suggested the Seymour Duncan Seth Lover pups but unfortunately they don't have those kinds of pups in Audiophile :(
Looking for that certain pup that will still give it its warm jazzy tone and midrangey bluesey overdriven tone and classic rocked distorted tone. :) Thanks

IA
Mark OK lang acoustic amp. Very flat response,, great if you do a lot of fingerstyle. Pero pag-BEBOP nothing can beat a tube amp, but if low budget a good transistor fender amp will do.

WOW, MARTIN TAYLOR; to me Mr. MT is the bearer of the torch of fingerstyle jazz guitar that JOE PASS 'started'. BTW, I would go for the Peavey, the 2 speakers bring more air and openness to the tone.

I was actually having 2nd thoughts of posting here, since all boxes posted have been branded ones. Even though we are all GAS aficionados in differing degrees, I think everyone appreciates guitars for what they are, regardless of the brand.
And thus, I would like to share my box, a no-brand, china constructed (I think) full hollow. Have owned this for more than 5 years so far.
The body is constructed out of plywood I guess. The pickups are obviously super low quality. The saddle is weird, and the floating bridge is a pain to set-up. The neck though is great, after re-gluing the fretboard because of separation, it was playable again, with surprisingly good low action I prefer. I have since repainted it to mat red. This is my only guitar, and it is a beater at the same time. At least intonation is good also.
Here are samples of how it sounds like, although this is direct to a laptop, the actual sound when run though an amp is approximately the same. I can coax different tones out of it with some fiddling. (Sorry, playing is not that good also, have stopped regular playing ever since I went full time with work).
Eventually, would want to purchase a better quality box, but this cheap guitar will stay with me since it has introduced me to the wonderful vibe of hollows after owning several "regular" electrics before.
Cheers.
Ace

For the price (10K?) pwede na. I strongly suspect they are made in china and rj just stamp their name to it. the rj factory razed by fire years ago. they just import them guitars from china where labor cost is floor-level.

decided to reward myself on my natal day last month. i had absolutely no plans of aquiring anything until I stumbled upon a gorgeous sounding Cort Source 335.
I still feel that she's a fluke. I love the chunky next that seemlessly transitions from a C shape to a D. It feels like it has a 14 inch radius with a generous string spread. Exactly what i prefer!
As for the sound: the pickups are remarkably clear and fat, the tone controls are tapered very well, and she's chock loaded with that harmonic bloom that some people like to wank to.
I'm still breaking her in. This axe should age nicely :)
here she is on our first date: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONYhjD1qb0U&list=UU2uK08kv0AuL_XpAOIy-PJQ&index=10&feature=plcp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONYhjD1qb0U&list=UU2uK08kv0AuL_XpAOIy-PJQ&index=10&feature=plcp)
will share more pics and vids when the airpocket presents itself.
my wife just named her "Dany" after Daenerys Targaeryan, coz the fiery red color reminds her of the mother of dragons (We're huge GOT fans)

What's the fuss if it's made in china? :?
Lahat yata ng jazzbox ngayon ng Ibanez (if I'm not mistaken) ay made in China... As long as you buy the unit brand new at any Audiophile store, you don't have to worry about it being fake..

Nothing wrong with MIC, let your ears be the guide.
Based on the stuff I've read I would also encourage you to check out some of the indonesian stuff as their factories appear to have a more stable tenureship with their workforce. I'm very happy with my Cort 335 (as posted above)

If your scoring it from audiophile, as mentioned, you can't go wrong.
But use your ears :)
Is there anyway i'll know the authenticity? I mean with the use of serial numbers stuffs like that,or even in physical appearance?
By the way, how does it sounds?

sir in my opinion, it depends sa type ng music mo, kung jazzbo ka, swabe ang Flatwound Strings jan guitar mo, warm na warm tunog nyan. kung blues or any other genre (hindi mo naman gagamitin af75 sa rakrakan e kawawa yan :-D) basta heavy gauge strings sir 10s or 11s (kahit hindi flatwound). For me masyadong magaan ang 9s sa AF75, I'll go for 10s. But still its your preference pa din kung ano swak sayo, hindi naman ako expert e :-D. goodluck! :)

9s might be too slinky and twangy on a short scale, IMHO. It's nice to have additional body and oomph on a semi-hollow guitar.
vegetablejoe has a les paul that's strung with 9.5s, which is a good guage for folks who are accustomed to 9s on fender scale necks (I'm assuming you're a 9s guy?).

yeah, been playing strats and teles on 9s for a while now. but there's something bout that big airy tone that the 335 bears and i know the string gauge is a major factor. so far the 10s on the 59 feels like a freshly installed 9s on a strat, a bit tight and thicker too. I wonder how these 10s would feel when they get broken in? I'll have to try those 9.5s!

in my opinion, well, based on experience.. if you are in standard tuning i would suggest use 10-46's. electric, since it's a semi-hollow electric guitar, Elixirs are not bad, they really shine (if you're not acidic), DR strings are not bad too.. but if you are in E flat tuning (like what i am in), i prefer to use Ernie-Ball 11-48's. Dunlop's are 11-52's kinda heavy, D'Addario's naman are 11-49's, kindi getting there. we should consider the 'tension' of the neck when installing heavy-gauged stings to avoid neck warping, etc.
also consider the tone factor of string gauges.
my two cents lang..

i think thats the beauty of the beast. the hollowed body and the laminated top creats that rounded and almost half muted sound, which to my ears are the tone you should expect from one, at least for me it is. else, ill play a strat if i wanted it bright and chimey :D

Here's a demo of an Epiphone ES-335. This one I think is on the bright side, and so were a couple of 335's I've tested. Sheraton ii is on a more mellow/refined side. Depends din siguro sa picking used. I used fingers in this video
Apologies for the sabit and overbends, hehe.

erwin, i know what you mean. but judging how he used the term 'blurred' which is a term attributed to vision than of hearing, i felt he meant the common complain of those without much experience with hollowbodies - that they sound 'ngongo', perhaps because they are used to the common strat or a les paul sound, which compared to how hollowbodies generally sound like, can be considered 'bright'.
ive heard this several times with some fellas complaining they couldnt get the sound they want out of an artcore or a epiphone hollowbody. and almost always, there wasnt anything wrong with it. they just didnt know it should that way.
ps. your hollowbody is laminated or carved top? yummy!

if you came from single coils, yeah dont expect the bells and chimes here hehe. little pickup roll can help you adjust better. dimarzio bluesbucker, unbuckers, mismatched coils or dummy coil, p90s.
its carved top bro. and a weight weenie too. held it yesterday and im psyched. its ready for finishing as much as i wanted a laminated top, i didnt want to deal with my vacuum press anymore. and i think the biggest problem is bending the sides which should be reserved for luthiers whose forte are acoustics.

i did have an AF75 (tor) before and if you cant play the 16th fret and you badly want and need to, then its the wrong guitar for you. a blues player you are? it would be beneficial to note that Clapton does use a 335 from time to time and it seems to work for him. so there. i think its time to get that guitar that works for you.

To those who own Epiphone Sheratons. Can you guys give feedback regarding the guitar? I'm currently itching to buy one soon and I would appreciate to get firsthand feedback regarding the guitar here. Cheers! :-D
I got mine last year as a gift from my GF, it's a versatile guitar aside from the pogi points it brings on stage hehehe

Thanks for the response! Sobrang plus points nga nung pogi factor. haha. I'm just a bit thorough since predominantly strat, tele player ako so i'm really used to chimey cleans. The Gibson ES-335 is a pipedream as of now so the Sheraton II would hopfully suffice for the meantime. Although I can point out that my first electric guitar was an Ibanez Artcore AXD82P which I have no very fond memories of.

My small contri to this thread. It's a Vester Mod800 from the 80's and recently swapped in BKP Stormy Mondays (courtesy of a fellow forumer.) :) Bought this a few months ago as panakip butas when I was severely GAS'ing for an ES-335. Tried several ones but just couldn't bond with any... :| Tried a few more after buying this but can no longer justify the price a gibby is asking for.

Any plans for a semi hollow eb or tone party so we can detect the differences in each other's axes? Interested to compare actual 335s with their dot cousins and vintage axes?
Any volunteers? Hehehe...

I would go for it. But inspect it first, if you can.
There's no way I can inspect it but he can send photos, the seller is one of my boss' buddy and also our client...mukhang napasubo na ako dito  , nagusap kami ng boss ko na kung pwede pakiusapan nya yung seller na magprovide ng hardcase tapos add ako na lang ng $50, the guitar is made in china which sucks IMO but worth din naman the trouble kasi I will gain good connetions :-D

Muddy tone? Teka fat body..

check mo muna kung x-bracing or parallel bracing. Mas safer mag-cut for a neck pickup sa parallel less chance of hitting on the top pracing. Maybe luthiers here can pitchin so you wont damage your guitar. all the best.

The pickups are not minihbs. It's called Ibanez GB Special. The description in the Ibanez website says:
"Floating pickup co-designed by George Benson for hollow bodies at higher volumes. Warm, well rounded output with less feedback."

Is anybody organising a semi hollow EB / Shootout day?
I have a '74 ES335 with a trapeze tail and I want to compare it to Stop tail es335s.
Im also pondering on wether to trade it up with a stop tail since the sustain and tonal characteristics of a trapeze aren't what I want from a semi hollow sound. Thought about having it converted by Micsis but I thought that I'd rather trade it up, than ruin a beautiful guitar.

just sharing; some of you may find this info useful.
performing a treble bleed tweak on a semi/full hollow without an access panel at the back is incredibly tricky and tedious. thankfully, it worked out well, and there were no casualties :-D
for those interested, i can share some advise on the experience (cap-resistor values, procedure, etc.)
thanks :)

yep. the unplugged sound is enough for your home acoustic guitar needs :)
regarding the feedback...research Ted Nugent. he uses full hollow guitars with loads of gain at arena volumes

^bro review naman sa Filtertron pups. Been on those for a while. BTW, ang ganda nung binding sa f-hole. :)
workmanship and finish of this guitar is great.
about the pups, they are called fidelitron. fender's version of gretsch's filtertron. i cannot compare both pups coz i don't own a gretsch guitar. though i tried one in a store before, i cannot give an accurate comparison. but as far as i can remember, the fidelitron is a bit warmer sounding.

The two are Dukin it out. I love the Gretsch Blacktop Filtertron pickups. So clear and punchy neck balanced bridge but gotta day hard to play with 11s on it. The new gal ES-345 very nice to play action wise and the overall vibe positive but the wax potted pickups don’t play well with this set up specially with TS808 HW. Time to pull out the new Randall dirtbox.

Had the chance to crank things up with my son on drums and I take it back. The ES-345 position 1 on the varitone is good enough. Compared to my BK mules on the lp it sure is good enough.

Labor of love. Took me around 9 months to build. Was originally a bigger Starcaster body but the builder ghosted me. Settled on a hollowed out JM with a piezo bridge. Very happy and looking forward to an actual starcaster build maybe next year.

Not really a primary guitar, more like a tone thing with the semis. Meron ba kayo mairerecommend?
