I love this thread!! I learned a lot really :-D finally I have bros to talk to about Rush...

yup odd meters minsan nga straight 4/4s lang done with taste and disguise pero I don't know, but it's still progressive.....IMHO it's the same approach done by Queensryche..it fits the song na walang overplay, check out the songs "The Thin Line" or "Silent Lucidity" from the Empire album. I believe this approach is also done by Pink Floyd, albums like "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" yun nga lang medyo iba ang message ng mga songs pero we can see na it's difficult to keep it simple but very progressive pa rin.

Yup personal freedom and individuality is very dominant in Rush Lyrics, from the song Subdvisions that lyric phrase which I love "In the High School halls, in the shopping malls, conform or be cast out".  haaay makabasa na nga ulit ng mga lyrics!!

@drumster

Thanks for the insights in a drummer's perspective sir, surely magbabad na naman ako ngayon with Rush songs  :-D
Yup, na notice ko nga kahit sa mga live concerts, napaka serious ni Peart, yung dalawa eh nag kekenkoy na pero si Peart nakayuko lang while playing with his kits.

Yup Tom Sawyer grabe, one of the most difficult songs to play, nalaglag ako sa kama when I saw the DVD Rush in Rio tapos ginawa nilang intro, I was totally blown away.

One of my dream gigs aside from seeing them play live and playing my own tunes, is to play covers of all of Rush songs. Been listening to some fusion stuff lately but because of this thread parang gusto kong sumifra ulit ng mga Rush songs  :-D

i played bass in a garageband in when i was in college and we tried to do justice to "Tom Sawyer", "Distant Early Warning", "YYZ", "Anthem", "A Passage to Bangkok", "Farewell To kings" etc... along with a couple of covers from Blue Oyster Cult, Stooges, MC5 and Kansas--we sucked but it would be fun to try and play these tunes again with guys that are as passionate about them as i am :)

yeah that will be lots of fun, basta hindi tayo busy, mag sked tayo!  puro Rush lahat  :-)

I was hooked into transcribing Rush songs last June 2007 up to August 2007 pero nahinto kasi aside from taking care and following up of my kid's sped class, I was looking forward to pay attention to my chops and some familiarization with scales that I want to study. Sometimes I just juggle it up with my priorities, medyo mahirap unlike before na single ako and all I do and think about is how to get better on the guitar.

By the way mga kapatid na tambolista, ano yung tawag sa percussion na ginagamit ni Neil Peart sa intro ng "Passage to Bangkok?". I believe Mike Portnoy is also using it a lot...I like that sound.

Those are cowbells, which are configured as one set, similar to this one --- http://www.lpmusic.com/Product_Showcase/Cowbells/lp_dry_agogo_set.html .  But on the recorded version of "A Passage To Bangkok" (from the 2112 album), he didn't use these.  I think he only uses those cowbells on its live version, particularly on their 1981 live album "Exit... Stage Left".  He also melodically played these cowbells on his Rhythm Method drum solo, which was clearly seen on the "A Show Of Hands" video.

this is a nice thread  :-)

sa kin din talaga Neil Peart is on the top list of drummers. he really rocks but he can also deliver a touch of jazz in his playing. hindi siya nakakasawang panoorin at pakinggan. there's always something new especially every album; he always has something special to offer. napakagaling!

kahit hindi ako drummer he inspires me a lot, just by listening to every beat and pound he expresses and even just by reading his interviews about their (Rush) perspective in music and how the world today has lost the integrity of music among new acts and producers who don't care much about craftmanship anymore (galing mismo sa bibig ni Lee, LIfeson and Peart).

when you hear Peart, there's really a signature to his sound. you'd truly recognize who's sitting behind the drums...there's something in his drum rolls that excites me everytime i hear his utmost playing.  :-)

by the way, available ba sa mga music stores dito ang Snakes and Arrows?

this is also what I like about Neil. All those little percussions add to that certain character to his solos, it reminds me of a marching band.

Those "vibes" sound alike percussions are also great to listen at in his "Rhythm Method" drum solo, he has that jazz big band influence that you will hear when all those sequenced I think? brass section comes in somewhere near the end of that solo..very melodic approach to drum solos indeed.

@rodney

yup ako rin gitarista but there's something about Neil na gusto ko na ma infuence ako....he is such a driving force.

We can see such integrity in them even in their videos, kahit videos lang talagang mabigat, very straightforward, no MTV infuence..

will try to check this weekend if it's available at music stores, the last time I checked, I think that was 3 months ago, wala pa.

I will also attempt to find Neil Peart's Ghostrider book at local bookstores, sana meron... :-)

I want to share a Neil Peart-related blog that I wrote last year.  I shared some of my thoughts about Neil Peart's Fear Trilogy.  For me, it's one of the most profound Peart lyrical compositions.  I learned a lot from his ideas about fear.

thanks for sharing sir drumster, that was some food for thought, oo nga no, I never really looked at it that way.

It really motivated me to be more proactive for a start.  :-)

From now  I make it a point to read the lyrics while listening to the music of Rush, that way I can understand the songs with more depth.

Anyway, I  forgot what magazine was that but it was about  Rush actually being named as Musicians of the Millenium, I forgot the details..

hey bro thanks for sharing! galing nito kahit demos pa lang..

@cs mapper

grabe Rush kaagad funds nyo? kainggit naman....yan din yung effect sa akin nung first time kong narinig yung Rush, it was YYZ then, Tom Sawyer.

the first thing that grabbed my attention was  Neil Peart's drumming, It was the most intense music I have ever heard kasi that time way back in high school ( late 80s to early 90s) I was into glam rock like Poison, Warrant...

I was hooked ever since...tama nga yung sabi sa Working Man tribute to Rush na album. It has become the soundtrack of their lives, yan ang nangyari sa akin hehehe...

Thanks for sharing that link, bro rjj!  I'm listening to the demo tracks right now.  It's interesting to hear the Power Windows tracks in its raw state.  And I agree... Demos pa lang, mismo na!  And Rush is reputable for being always ahead of their time, taking advantage of the latest technology.  This is a well-done demo, considering that Power Windows was released in 1985.

Power Windows is one of my favorite Rush studio albums.  My favorite songs from this album are The Big Money, Grand Designs, Marathon, and Middletown Dreams.  The 80's are what most fans describe as Rush's "synthesizer era".  And during this time, Neil incorporated electronics in his massive drum set-up.  The 80's albums are great examples of Neil showing his creativity with electronic percussion.  Some good examples:  The Big Money (Power Windows), Mystic Rhythms (Power Windows), Red Sector A (Grace Under Pressure), Red Lenses (Grace Under Pressure), Force Ten (Hold Your Fire), Tai Shan (Hold Your Fire), Scars (Presto).

By the way, the melodic tom groove on Scars is also the same pattern Neil Peart uses on the electronic portion of his famous drum solos.

iba tlga dating ng rush. i'm really glad fate led me to that pirated hissy cassette tape
containing a live version of tom sawyer na bitin pamo dahil nag fade out
picture album. tapos yung "a show of hands" hehe tuwa ako may drum solo
sya at sa unang dinig sus marya medyo natawa ako at the same time
sya pero malupit sarap tlga pakinggan paulit ulit. parang may sense of humor at well arrange yung
mga drum solo ni neil and yet he comfied that he finds drumming so damn hard to do
though he makes it looks so easy.

at pwede mo download lahat ng albums nila for free hehe..rush torrents kayo dyan LOL!

rush music also helped heal some wounds since my 1st bandmates after some years developing each other talent where stolen from me by this jerks who promised them club gigs or whatever. so instead of feeling sorry for myself i simply kept on studying and transcribing neil peart's
drum parts even though there's no real future  playing some of it with a new band. atleast
rush music kept me in good condition, emotionally and mentally while learning new stuff from them until i got a new rockin band but unfortunately no rush music in the menu but that's ok
coz it was a new era and new music to explore and other bands and drummers to discover old and new.

yeah i was lucky to play tom sawyer live at least once in one college concert and some few more times
on bday gigs and club attacks, yung jam kayo sa club para lagayan yung nakapwestong banda
na mukhang sisiw tumugtog LOL! ...mga kabulastagan namin nun hehe.

pero nakakapagod tlga tumogtog ng rush songs. tom sawyer palang eh nangayayat ako tlga lol
kaya mga idol tlga mga rush kasi hanggang ngayon unpretentious, honest, artistic, totally uncompromising band that stood the test of time. kahit matanda na sila hanep pa rin
tumogtog.

inspired lang me after reading all the post here.

sa performance nya dun hehe somehow it did showed a little...hehe...tulog muna ko lol!

I love the 80s era of Rush!! Neil Peart's use of electronic drums feels like he's making his kits sing and it even contributes a lot to the heaviness in their songs, I mean if we attempted to play Big Money or The Mission without those electronic percussions there, kulang na kulang...

Hey fellow Rush and Neil Peart advocates, dont forget also aside from the heavy music and the thought provoking lyrics, the great and virtuostic album covers!! progressive and evolving ang dating.

^ Oh yeah!  Rush's album artworks are excellent conversation pieces.  Neil Peart has collaborated closely with keyboard player and artist Hugh Syme for most of Rush's artworks.  Here's a page from the Power Windows Rush Tribute Site which talks in detail about all of these.  And as a bonus, all the pictures can be downloaded and used as your desktop wallpaper.  Enjoy!  8-)

wow this is very nice!!! thanks for sharing sir! I downloaded the desktop theme of Power Windows, since among the many, this is one of my favorite album covers.

It's all about explaining life in a very creative and yet logical way...you'd go "oo nga no??!!"

The album covers in my opinion can be considered as expensive paintings in art galleries and museums.

Anyway, I have to find time to read all the thoughts behind the creation of these album covers, dapat dito? in your siesta mode ka where all you have to do in a day is to sit down and relax and just be an avid Rush fan.

As of now, the Power Windows site  is my favorite site, along with this thread also  :-D

^ Yes sir, totoo yan.  When they're on a road tour, instead of riding the bus, he goes to the next city by bike.  Neil Peart loves road trips, whether it's biking, motorcycling, or driving a sportscar.  Neil is a well-travelled man, and he had biking trips on places like China and West Africa.

He's into physical activities such as biking, hiking and skiing.  I remember Neil mentioning in his old Modern Drummer interviews that he isn't sluggish when it comes to physical activities.  In fact, he loves physical exertion.  And he said he got that from drumming.  8-)

wow that's so cool! neil peart is simply a great great great man.
cool to know he really loves epics bycicle rides just the way their epic band is hehe. Much tnx for the info Sir Drumster hehe.

seems God gave him the ultimate test though...and yet he conquered it
extremely well. Such  a strong man deep inside. I wonder if he found a new love now, personally that is?

one of my drum mentor for some reason hates Neil, his band and his drumming. Well seems he hates guys that are simply uncompromising well that's his problem. Glad I don't have to suck up to this guy anymore just to get recommended on bands with music I really hate.

Yes.  After going through the tragedy, Neil re-married.

"On August 10, 1997, Peart's daughter and only child, 19-year-old Selena Taylor, was killed in a single-car accident on the 401 highway near the town of Brighton, Ontario. His common-law wife of 22 years, Jaqueline Taylor, succumbed to cancer only 10 months later on June 20, 1998. Peart, however, maintains that her death was the result of a "broken heart" and called it "a slow suicide by apathy. She just didn't care."

In his book Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road, Peart writes of how he had told his bandmates at Selena's funeral, "consider me retired."[11] Peart took a hiatus to mourn and reflect, during which time he traveled extensively throughout North America on his BMW motorcycle, covering 88,000 km (55,000 miles). At some point in his journey, Peart decided to return to the band. Peart wrote Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road as a chronicle of his geographical and emotional journey.

While visiting long-time Rush photographer Andrew MacNaughtan in Los Angeles, MacNaughtan would play matchmaker and introduce Peart to his future wife, photographer Carrie Nuttall. Peart married Nuttall on September 9, 2000.

In early 2001, Peart announced to his bandmates that he was ready to return to recording and performing. The product of the band's return was the 2002 album Vapor Trails. At the start of the ensuing tour in support of the album, it was decided amongst the band members that Peart would not take part in the daily grind of press interviews and "Meet and Greet" sessions upon their arrival in a new city that typically monopolize a touring band's daily schedule. While Peart has always shied away from these types of in-person encounters, it was decided that having to needlessly expose him to an endless stream of questions about the tragic events of his life was quite unnecessary."

nila Virgil Donati, Derek Roddy, Dave Weckl, Mike Mangini, Jojo Mayers or Neil's idol...Buddy Rich...
as in sarap tlga pakinggan na parang nakakarelax pa.
Well thought drum solo indeed.

Anyway I'm glad for some reason I tend to change world easily during
my woodshedding days from rush to led zeppelin to deep purple during my
play along time.

Pag rush dapat tlga note for note kasi super sagwa tlga pag nag-improvise ka sa music nila for some reason lalu na pag tom swayer,
subdivision, freewill, spirit of radio and yyz hehe.

Sa led zep at deep purple songs...ah it's ok to strech and improvise a little on their songs and it's a different world for me something i always wanted to conquer and develop through all the years
I've played drums on and off.

So seeing Neil playing jazz feels kinda wierd for me now while years and years ago
when I was still a newbie drummer ok lang basta importante andun si Neil dun sa Buddy Rich Memorial concert. My drum mentor was laughing out loud telling me how stiff and stupid he sounded during his set. deep inside I was so furious I wanted to kick him off his house hehe. Well i kept cool and thought that
may be someday I might really understand why my drum mentor was so harsh on Neil's attempt to play some jazz music. Now I know...yet I'll keep that for myself hehe.

So I think I'll check my drum mentor now
if he can actually play some old school jazz and this time I'll be the one laughing out load if he can't nail my jazz drumming expectations hehe.
