Title: Greco guitar users
Post by: royc on May 14, 2008, 06:29:10 AM
[update]http://www.grecoed.com/ (http://www.grecoed.com/)good scans of old greco catalogs
Para din to sa mga interested sa Greco so we can share what we know. Here's mine:
[update 052609] mahogany two piece, two layer back maple two piece top mahogany three piece neck rosewood Fingerboard locking tuners Gibson 57 classic/classic plus pickups (still have the stock U-2000) Goodall NOS oil caps refretted (used to have fret edge binding) solid body and not pancaked
Hindi ko kaya ang Gibson hehe kaya I decided to get either a Greco, Tokai or Burny.

No such thing as a brand new Greco. They were discontinued when Gibson filed a lawsuit against them.
Greco still makes guitars. I recently saw some brand new Greco made Zemaitis guitars in the Hollywood Mesa Boogie store. The guy said that Greco has an agreement with Zemaitis to reproduce Zemaitis guitars. The guitars were very nice too.
However, I don't think Greco makes Fender or Gibson copies anymore.

Hard to find na nga ngaun yan.

Greco still makes brand new guitars. Just last year, I went by this store in Singapore(Davis Music). They have brand new LP copies except it doesn't have the open book headstock.

I don't know kung kailan sila nag start, pero I know that Mesa Boogie Hollywood has been selling them for at least two years now. Anyway here is a link to the Greco Zemaitis (GZ) Guitars website.

i beg to disagree...
you still gotta, gotta test the guitar for yourself.
I used to gig and practice with a friend's super real one thousand...the guitar is just dead.
PUs were changed...it was still dead.

yups very true :-)
after you have verified the specs you have to test the guitar (I didn't test mine coz I trusted the demo soundclip and the previous owner was less than a kilometer away).
the reason i am after the specs if for collectabillity, if you intend to pass it on to your baby. after all you're buying a near vintage guitar so you might as well get one with a good resale value in addition to a good tone. like anybody can buy a good modern pup but it would be a challenge finding a replacement original pup. if you don't like the stock pup you can buy a new one but keep the original. dings and scratches are not as important -- it's an old guitar so expect it.

i agree bro... i used to own around 7 guitars, sold 6 of them and left my stratocaster. you really can never tell unless you try the guitar personally. Most newbies learn this the hard way... buying something expensive doesn't always mean buying a good sounding guitar... not an issue for collectors since they won't care if it sounds good.... but.... most of vintage guitars do...
as they always say, try the guitar first before buying it... if it's brand new, compare it with the rest.... buti pa people in the US, they can try lots of guitars...

i agree with y'all that you need to test the guitar first, i too learned it the hard way, i bought and sold majority of my guitars for the reliable ones. hirap din ng gnun ang gastos eh hehehe

upping this thread, i saw one '77 Greco custom LP na 2-way switching, i know it's authentic Greco but im not sure if this will held up to abuse. andami nang bangas, mejo cracked na yung paint, may dings and everything, bent na yung neck, hay. maayos pa kaya tong mga to? balak ko kasing kunin taz spray-an ko ng clear lacquer para ma-preserve yung pagkaluma nya. nanghihinayang ako kasi yung greco e patay na yung may-ari tapos yung gumagamit ngayon eh hiskul lang at kung saan san lang pinapatong, walang ingat. sayang naman. gusto ko i-rescue hehe.

1) nung buksan ko yung truss rod cover bumulaga yung parang bullet-type na end. im thinking dun ba yun ina-adjust (yung neck) kasi bent na siya kahit nung alisin ko na yung strings eh gusto kong unatin. or since old model siya baka naman dun sa loob ng neck pick-up cavity kaya lang di ko maangat yung neck pup kasi kalawang na yung screws (and wasak na almost kahit yung head ng screws);
2) since kalawang na yung screws and mejo difficult na bunutin, anu kaya magandang atake para mabunot ko sila? brittle na kasi so pag plinais ko baka lalong madurog. will WD40 help?
3) balak ko palitan lahat ng hardware (tuners, tailpiece, bridge saddles, strap buttons) pati yung pots kasi yung tone pot ng neck pup e wala ng cover at di na maikot. pag pinihit eh sumasama yung buong pot. ang ititira ko lang siguro eh yung switch na 2-way;
4) since vintage na siya at marami nang dings, is it advisable if i spray clear lacquer para mapreserve yung itsura nya ngayon na relic?

im planning to change the pots too to 1M para jangly hehe. and 3way switch. 2-way switching lang kasi to eh. needs refretting na din. i've installed strap locks din para no more fears na mahulog.
eto pics:
(http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm119/musikerochan/Image006-1.jpg) setneck. the previous owner probably drilled a strap button kaya may butas dun sa neck joint.
(http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm119/musikerochan/Image009-2.jpg) new tuners
(http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm119/musikerochan/Image010-1.jpg) new tailpiece, old thumb screw
(http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm119/musikerochan/Image011-1.jpg) wow, that killer aged binding.
(http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm119/musikerochan/Image012-2.jpg) mejo weird yung description sa Net about this guitar, kasi yung mga LP custom na built 1977 e 3pups, eto dalawa lang. magkaiba din yung pups: isa covered, isa hindi. Custom nga siguro kaya ganun.

Customs are EGC not EG. Try mo ipost sa tokaiforum.com under greco yung pics isama mo yung ilalim ng pups at routing then ask for advice on the model.

i agree with y'all that you need to test the guitar first, i too learned it the hard way, i bought and sold majority of my guitars for the reliable ones. hirap din ng gnun ang gastos eh hehehe

Here's my 1978 Greco Speedway. This one is the 24 fret version with pickup coil taps. Very versatile guitar with quite a few different pickup combinations. Its neck thru design also makes this the longest sustaining guitar in my collection. what to look for: 1. set neck and all stock, if possible
wish list: 1. an eg700 or higher (kadalasan eg500) 2. solid body although yung iba mas gusto chambered para mas magaang 3. late 70s is good early 80s is best
what not to get: 1. repainted

budget: not exceeding 20k pero kung mag exceed man, hingi kay mama :-D
pag chambered may acoustic properties ang sound nya. if you don't know the difference then i guess it doesn't matter :)

Mga Sirs, curious lang ako, dapat bang lagyan ng EMG Zakk Wlde and Greco or pinabayaan na lang ang stock pick-up? Nilagyan ko kasi ng ganitong pick up ang 1990 or 1980 Greco ko (not sure ang guitar dater). I can't remember anymore kung anong PUP's ang mabigat, ang emg ba o ang stock.

ano itsura ng truss rod cover? malalaman mo kung 80 or 90 based dun. yung pup na stock depende rin sa model ng greco so hard to tell. kung nasa yo pa yung stock pups kunin mo yung markings sa ilalim.

Anybody want to comment if this is really a "Mint Collection"? 60's slim profile neck. I couldn't find the serial number (and I haven't looked under the pickups yet). looks like a late 80s or early 90s korean mint collection: no serial, truss rod cover is bell instead of curve, unbranded tuners, hardware looks new. to confirm you need to look at the cavity.
check out the rightmost example on this page: http://www.cosmikdebris.co.uk/grecopics.htm#serial (http://www.cosmikdebris.co.uk/grecopics.htm#serial)
looks very nice tho :)

not super real..not sure though, serial starts with an "O", so according to my research this is probably early 80's greco les paul custom, long tenon neck.
anyway, i just got the pick up rings so Im in the process of relicing it..or aging... I got cream pup rings, I think its going to look interesting with black :-D

Para din to sa mga interested sa Greco so we can share what we know. Here's mine:
It's a 1978 EG700 setneck, solid body (hindi pancake). All stock except sa tone pot at refretted sya. Eto specs:
Mahogany one layer body Maple two piece top Mahogany one piece neck Rosewood Fingerboard U-2000 pickups
Hindi ko kaya ang Gibson hehe kaya I decided to get either a Greco, Tokai or Burny.

yup. this one came from atomo (big thanks to the gentleman. such a good dealer). i was planning to replace the pups with pearlygates before i got my hands on the axe but when i tried it, i was amazed with its superb PAFish tone and it sustained like there's no tomorrow...lol...i guess i'm sticking w/ the stock pups for the moment but i i'm not really sure what specific Dimarzio PAF model they are. the guitar is not really that heavy, maybe around 8 - 9lbs i guess...though there were some scratches & paint chips but with its age...i can say, this axe was really well preserved. i think this guitar could standout against the real thing GIBBY...lucky for me i guess... :-D

Is it really a Super Real model even without the "Super Real" on the headstock? :-)
sorry i missed that wala ngang super real logo. Year and model is correct. Kahit yung low end model may nakalagay dapat na super power. Possible na leftover na non super real neck from 79.

I agree. I would have gone for it if it had the super real or super power logo. :-)
Hard to determine without seeing the pickup cavity, even with that there's so many factors to consider. :-D

Sir so 89 or 79? naguguluhan padin ako sir salamat nga pala sa replies.
wala pang ganyang truss rod cover nung 1979 dati gibson-like trc pa. then nagkaron ng issue nung early 80s (kaya tinawag na lawsuit era) so yung greco, tokai, burny, etc started changing the trc.
sa greco, late 79 lumabas ang super real series na replica ng real gibson LPs pati trc then nung nagpalit ng trc naging mint collection na pero ang visible difference lang is trc. sometime late 80s i believe naging korea na yung iba.
sa mga pics na nakita ko ng mik ang common is hindi braided wires and may black paint sa loob pag LP. not sure sa SG.
a friend told me na yung 70s greco are copies ng 70s gibson while yung super reals are copies ng original gibsons. so pag may nakita kang stock super real at reasonable ang price go get it, lalo pag nakita mong 2 piece maple top sya it means di sya low end.
nung second year ng super reals, i believe, nagkaron ng upgrades kaya yung lower models ng super reals the year before ay naging super power meaning dati silang super real the year before. hindi yata maple top ang super power.
also please note na may mga overlapping like super real na may parts ng 70s or super power na may mint collection trc.
from memory kaya plus or minus 1 year hehe

teka, quick question guys, i dunno if anyone has the same problem. ganito kasi: yung GReco LP ko eh mejo rusty na yung mga saddles and hardtail bridge. no. more like corroded na. i painted it gold to cover the base metal and prevent further corrosion. ive traide replacing the tailpiece na before but sadly, the replacement didnt fit. when i measured, yung distance ng low E sa high E dun sa old saddle is 50mm, while yung mga bago ngayon is 52mm.

all upgrades should be reversible, especially kung all stock:
1. no refinish 2. no additional holes 3. don't remove the decal
and keep the original parts
to make it shine pag madami nang gasgas:
1. use autosol metal polish once on the finish to remove the fine scratches then a good guitar polish sa mga susunod pero wag araw araw.
use lemon oil sa fretboard and wipe the body and strings after every use

Sa pups no prob. Anong part ba papalitan mo?

It may look old on the outside pero it still sounds like new.

I mean sayang dapat di mo pinaconvert.

Papalitan pa yung bridge at nut nyan eh. Gastos ulit. Sana binenta mo nalang sakin tas bumili ka 6-string pero kanya kanyang trip diba? IMHO lang naman talaga ehh sayang.

Hindi ko kaya ang Gibson hehe kaya I decided to get either a Greco, Tokai or Burny.

dun sa shaft may pin sized hole. hanap ka ng matigas na wire or paper clip pasok mo dun and turn to tighten or loosen.

My current no.2 is a 1979 Greco Jeff Beck Strat.
Had to slightly tweak it with a new pickguard & selector switch as the stock switching drove me nuts. but I kept the old stuff for safe-keeping :-)
I used this guitar at the pedal shoot-out, alot of the participants felt that she had the *cough* "hiyaw" thing going for her. Was not surprised as the 1st greco strat I owned had this quality too.
Still wrestling with the very pronounced V shape neck & radius. i admit to having a love/hate relationship with her as it takes me longer to warm up to her neck, but DAMN, THE TONE. it's a tough-love thing! She's a b*tch but she's fantastic!
Will post pics soon...

Google is your friend, bro. there are a lot of simple explanations for that. Cheers!

plus, all of their guitars were hand made prior to the early 80s. They acquired CNC machines in about 1982 or something.

Noted Bro!. .
One observation nga pala with the construction of the "Body" of the Guitar,. . Madalas ma notice ko na there are those person who are critical about. . "Chambered", "Sandwiched" or "Pancaked". . etc. . as compared to "One Piece" solid bodied guitar. . I observed most of them treat those as "Defect" of the guitar not as a "Design" which is in a sense they devalue the guitar. . Parang may Mali. . . di kaya. . . <_<
Next Guitar on the List Please. . . Show it!

Thanks Bro!.. . OO nga medyo Bihira na labas ng Greco and other MIJ LP ngayon. . . at medyo mataas pa yung price kadalasan kung meron man. . . I think meron din Super Real dito, kaya lang . . . they tend to hold on with it. . it is as good as it get as owning yung real gibson LP. . In other forum (though accused as bias) mas ok pa nga daw yung ibang MIJ LP's kadalasan (not saying all the time). . . . I think that they are more patient, dedicated and disciplined sa kanilang crafts(in my view). . Yung comm eqpt. lang namin (as an example)we use diff. brands of so many company yung japan made namin eqpt. is still working!(30 yrs!. . comm eqpt?. . yap! JRC. . Japan Radio Corp.). . after yung eqpt. made from other countries is long gone. . thats why i tend to gravitate on MIJ guitar. .

Additional parts for my Greco LP came in today.. sayang, hindi na siya "all stock", nakuha ko rin naman kasi na hindi na stock yung ibang parts. Pero yung hardware niya ay stock pa and still very much intact. I'll leave it there.
Hehe.

Hindi naman. Parang old guitar meets new parts. Haha. Haha. Saka may pickup set na talaga akong gusto. Hehe. Hehehe.
Crap. Naikabit ko na ngayong gabi yung pickguard. Di ko na isasama sa docu. Hehe.

Going to keep the stock parts intact, pickguard, control plate, electronics and bridge, and replace it with new ones with different configuration. Para unscrew and salpak lang.

Not sure bro. Correct me if I'm wrong. Example, EGC95K. Meaning, EG Custom 95,000 Khaler.
Check mo itong isang John Sykes model. Wala rin kasi "K" sa serial. :-( http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/guitars-sale-trade-wanted/140286-1984-greco-les-paul-john-sykes-usa-only.html (http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/guitars-sale-trade-wanted/140286-1984-greco-les-paul-john-sykes-usa-only.html)

thanks chino, supersounds large headstock yon? ano itsura ng headstock... A: http://www.shamray-shop.ru/images/imp/nw_shamrayshop__2019_3.jpg B: http://image.rakuten.co.jp/otakara-100/cabinet/00808992/ub017-4.jpg
Oh wait. Nalito ako. Sorry. Yung pinaka high end pala na Super Sounds with large headstock ay SE600. Ang SE800 pala ay small headstock na. Sorry bro.
Regarding the decal, I can't really tell. Pics are too small and blurry sa catalog.

Dings will come and I'm ok with those.

I was expecting you'll be getting a Strat or an LP based on your previous questions dito sa forum. Hehe. Sayang, wala pa akong nakikitang nagbebenta ngayon ng Tele. I think a fellow forumer said Toybitz has one. Have you tried contacting him to ask if he wants to let go of it?
Good luck on the hunt.

I have already asked toybitz, upfront, gilbert and i believe a couple more members here and can't remember their names... toybitz said the tele has already been traded, i haven't received a response from gilbert who has a greco tele deluxe, upfront's tele was sold to toybitz which was traded to someone else... prank_sinatra has a greco thinline but he is still not sure if he wants to sell it... really hard to find.
I already have a greco se 600 1976 supersounds large headstock, so far i am satisfied with it and for me it's already a gem. Before I was thinking of trading it or selling it but as time goes by I am loving the strat and it's vintage sound. I have friends who tried to play the strat during jam's and gigs and all of them said they love the sound even sir Max Rufo so I have decided that the strat is for keeps.

So what about earlier builds like a 1975 se800 for example, is it inferior to your se600 done 1976 where excel pups started. Is the only difference the stamped excel. Or the excel pups are totally different pups superior to the pups installed to high end strats before 1976. Btw san gawa strat mo, fujigen o matsu.

I believe mas high-end o better quality yung EXCEL pickups.
See Bing search results: http://www.bing.com/search?q=greco+excel+pickups&qs=n&form=QBRE&filt=all&pq=greco+excel+pickups&sc=0-0&sp=-1&sk=

Do you guys have information on these Greco LPs? Not familiar with the headstock and the logo/emblem. Are these new ones? By Zemaitis perhaps.
Reverse truss rod? So bolt on to malamang... Japan made pa kaya to? baka parang Tokai na may mga made in china na...
No TRC. :?
According to the specs these are set necks with graphtech nubone nuts, so I think they're new . And I was able to decipher Made in Japan through the Japanese text.
Truss rod is still a mystery though. :-(

Look closely on the neck pickup. That's where the truss rod can be adjusted. Ala Washburn N series siguro.

I just want to share my thoughts on this Sir. Highend EXCEL pickups for SE series were released in 1976 but it doesn't mean that earlier models were low-end SE series. The quality and craftmanship of SE series were at its best during the early 70's til early 80's that why they called it the Golden Age for Greco. The pickups were just a one time factory deal - still carries an alnico magnet, it is just a label, i guess what we should be looking at is the whole craftmanship of the guitar. This is just my opinion sir based on all the reviews i've read regarding GRECO SE-series strat.
Actually i have seen some of the earlier models sells higher in japan auctions. :-)

all japan greco pickups i believe are high end but you have to hear the EXCEL pickups and be a believer of what the pickup offers.

get a super real late 79 to 82 yun. Pag zero ang serial make sure bell shape ang truss rod cover coz it could be 1990. Higher model num is better.

Buy if you can afford it. Best greco lp ang super real series around 2 years lang yan lumabas nung early 80s. The model number indicates that it is a high end model. Bihira yan sa local ads. Sana all stock never mind the dings and scratches.

sir anung model dapat ang kukunin kung meron? kasi may mga year na may diamond logo na yung eg1000...tama ba sir , same lang ang tunog nilang dalawa, yung walang diamond logo at may logo na diamond na eg1000 super real series? thank you

Never mind the logo or the absence of it-- what's important is if the digits are really 1000 (in reality you can't choose coz bihira na may nagbebenta nyang dalawa at the same time). As a general rule buy something with the digits starting at 700 (midrange model less than 25k locally, mas mahal pag super real). Anything higher syempre mas mahal.
pre 80s -- copy of 70s lp early 80s - super real, replica of earlier lp mid to late 80s - mint collection, same as super real but with differect shape ng truss rod

A pancake top is made by shaping a wet maple to form the curved top. It is then glued on top of the mahogany body. This forms a hollow area under the curved top which they say can be seen from the cavity. The cavity shows a thick maple top so it's probably solid. Nice

Check out the diffrent wood colors of the pick up cavity. The lower part of the cavity is darker than the top which will tell you if its solid or pancaked.
Nice finish though..very sexy :)

share ko lang 'to
My 1979 Greco Supersound Strat -changed the bridge pickup to dual rail -installed a 5-way switch (came from a mexican fender strat) -the rest is all stock
kaya pramis ko sa sarili ko, di ko na 'to ibbenta/trade kahit kailan. i'm also planning to upgrade the tuners and bridge of this guitar. :)
just as i thought hahaha... very very nice guitar!!! :-D :-D :-D
sarap itabi sa honeyburst na LP ko

I have a Faber bridge and tailpiece set for my '83 Mint Collection LP Custom. I have the metric set on it and was a drop in replacement.
I believe the one on the link you provided will also be a drop-in fit. It's just the locking version of the one I have on my Greco. :-)

A high-end model super real should stay stock, IMO. However, you can change the hardware as long as you keep the original parts and make no new holes to retain its commercial value.

Salamat!

Naku sir baka di worth it. The fact na bolt on yan means na low end yan or early models kung kelan hinde pa magaling magcopy ang greco. I suggest pagawa or repair mo na lang yan dun sa medyo mura sumingil. Para lang marestore.

yeah bro insanely clean and insanely pretty with original unbroken solders! Not like the '54 but not so shabby either ;)
If I could afford PAFs and a vintage harness I'd drop em in there but I can't get myself to tamper with the unbroken solders
Naku.

no I don't cos there's no sticker in the back. the inly thing I'm sure of is Mop inlays. it's from 81 ans it says super real on the headstock ... nice dark rosewood board and subtle flame... still a very deep burst to it... the guitar is almost mint..
I have yet to open the cavity to see the pups... hoping for dry Zs
Plasticwise, he knobs need to go! may spare naman akong VC knobs here and a OTPG poker chip dito

Here's my Greco LP Std. an '84 Mint Collection if i'm not mistaken.
overall i find it okay. Bass is too deep, i prefer the EQ of a vintage style LP. i can live with it. clean is okay. a little dirt to heavy driven sound is good. of course its no boutique guitar.
sound clip
forgive my playing. i was just doing some random things when i decided to whip out my iphone 4 and record on video.

the serial number follows the X YYYY format. X = 4.
You are correct, it is a 1984 model, though I expected a different TRC. Perhaps the previous owner changed it or they used a Super Real neck or TRC (this is a normal practice with MIJ guitars). Try checking if it has a long tenon.
Title: Re: Greco guitar users

I think the TRC's of the MC series were the long narrow ones and not the usual bell cover! But it could have easily been just replaced

i think so too. one of the previous owners put in vintage gibson hardware too ( stopbar, ABR, posts ). from what vintage decade, i dunno. definitely not 50s. 60s unlikely. baka 70s. or 80s.

Ah, the previous owner probably replaced the TRC. It is said that the quality of the Super Real series is similar to the Mint Collection, with the TRC as the obvious difference. Congrats!

"Eventually, as the company found that the demand for their popular replicas grew and that the size of the production was getting too large, they relinquished their Stratocaster division to Fender Japan in late 1981.
By 1982, Greco Stratocasters became Fender JV Stratocasters, then later MIJ and CIJ Stratocasters, made by the same guys who made the Greco "Sparkle Sound," "Spacey Sound," "Sparkle Sound," and "Super Real" Stratocasters from 1977-1981."

So far ang pinaka latest na nakita ko serial ng greco strats ay yung katulad nung sa akin which is march 1982. So i think fender japan starts at around april 1982 My strat most likely belongs to the last productions of greco strat before they change it to fender japan.

I finally got a reply from the original owner. He says it's an EG-600R. Is that accurate? I found some brochures and since alam ko na yung year (thanks Chino) nakita ko sya. It looks like it. So hindi naman sya sobrang low-end kung ganoon am I right? I can read a bit of Japanese and sabi sa 77 brochure it has U1000 pickups and maple laminate body.

Yep. From the catalog, it seems like an EG-600R. Maple laminate is just a fancy word for saying that it has a pancake body. Typical for 70s japan LPs.

What is the serial number? Bridge looks shiny so it may have been replaced. Ask if it is an original gold top or refinished. How many screws are there on the truss rod cover? I can't see the lower screws from my phone. Is it set neck?
Check the cavity. Painted black can mean it is mik.
Average price of mij greco non super real is 25k.
