I'm into math. I like to think of shortcuts to solve everyday math processes mentally. An example of the things I came up with is dividing any number by 5. My shortcut is to multiply that number by 2 then moving the decimal point one place to the left. Say you have 56.5, the answer is 113 with a decimal moved a place to the left, so 11.3 :)

nice tip

ang alam ko lang ung pag multiply ng any 2 digit number to 11...
ex: 23*11
2+3=5
put that 5 between 2 and 3. the answer is 253. bow

That's really multiplying by  (2/10). Or (1/5)

Yup, that's the point. It's easier to process it that way.

I'm just verifying the "short cuts".
And the x11 short cut of adding the digits of the two digit number - it's because of the fact that when you do long multiplication, both digits will have to be multiplied by 10, and will line up, thus, the need to add. But it's only valid  for two digits which add up to 9 max. If the sum is 10 or more, it doesn't work. It's because you have to "carry" the extra digit to the next left column when doing multiplication.

Eg 55x 11 is not equal to 5105, but 605

If the total of the two numbers exceeds 10, just carry over the tens digit of the sum of both numbers to the first digit (e.g. 87 x 11, 9 [first digit +1 due to 8+7 being more than 15, which is more than 10],5 [ones digit of the sum], 7 [second digit] = 957).

right, so it's not for all 2-digit numbers, as earlier claimed. If the sum of the digits exceed 9, there's an extra step.

Which makes it more complicated than just simply multiplying. Or using a calculator.

That's the real beauty of math, proving/ disproving theorems and finding (or trying to find) universal truths.

That extra step ain't difficult, actually. It even works for 3-digit numbers. And for what it's worth, solving basic arithmetic equations by using any mental math shortcut would be more than complicated compared to doing so by using a calculator. :lol:

and multiplying any number by 11 (conventionally)  isn't difficult as well. Which is why I question the "short-cut" which needs an if-then-else statement.

Other people don't have the mental computing power to easily deal with larger numbers and would rather work with smaller ones. Such shortcuts are not necessary anymore for practicing engineers such as myself and for other people who have a knack for numbers (presumably you), but for the benefit of everyone, these small tricks may help them mentally compute for stuff through easy-to-follow steps. Maybe you can share some of your math tricks as well so that you can actually contribute to this thread :)

Point is, some "short-cuts" are not really shortcuts. In the x11 example, it's actually longer. You have to test the digits if they fall within a certain criterion. If yes, then do one thing. If not, do another thing (which consists of several iterations).

A "simpler shortcut" for x11 is multiply by 10 and add the same number. Thus 45 x 11 = 450+45 = 495. No if-then-else statement.

And just for argument's sake, people who have a "knack for numbers" may not be necessarily good in mathematics. They may be good in arithmetic, but not in the other branches of mathematics, which require logic and analysis.

Which brings me to your "contributing to this thread" statement. I've been "contributing to this thread" by verifying and analyzing the logic of the "math tricks". That is the essence of mathematics, after all.

That's how I do it as well. Not just with a multiplier of 11, but with other values as well. I agree that this method has less steps; it can be easily performed by most people with passable computational skills if the numbers are small but it gets a bit hairy for 'em numerically-challenged folks if the numerical values are higher. They prefer kabisote-style prodecures

And just for argument's sake, people who have a "knack for numbers" may not be necessarily good in mathematics. They may be good in arithmetic, but not in the other branches of mathematics, which require logic and analysis.
That's why I only mentioned basic arithmetic. That was what jm the mute and I were talking about in the first place :)

honestly, nung bata ko...di ko rin gets yung kinakabisado ung mga multiplication table. my parents told me na ang importante is naintindihan how it works. so I was always the slow one pag mga pabilisan sa recitation Hehehe. hindi ko nga alam paano ako naging engineer eh hehe. I suck at arithmetic. I like literal equations though, kasi walang numbers (basta hanggang advanced algebra lang). Maths puzzles in general. I guess I like syntax more than the actual arithmetics, kaya mahilig ako gumawa ng solving machines sa excel sa trabaho.

Conversion ng Polar to Imaginary Equations with Natural Logs and N base, I tatake ko ulet,..

Personal Experience:

Math at Engineering Sciences, Maning mani sa akin pagdating sa Board exam, Walang wala talaga, basta alam mo at gamay mo ang formulas. para bang Memorize mo ung likod ng palad mo, Ang mahirap, ung EE major talaga,
Take two ako sa board exam,

ang 1st take ko, 80% sa Math, 77% sa Engg Sub & Applied Science, pero 50% ako sa EE.

Nagaral ako ng maiigi nung first time, pero wala pa rin.

the 2nd time, chill lang ako sa pagaaral, aral onte, laro more, ayun, Pumasa. mas mataas pa sa first take ko.
Sabi nila, swertihan daw, I think, nasa paghandle ng pressure yan kung paapaano mo sisiksikin ung napagaralan mo ng 5-6 years in 3 day exam.

(sabi nila, the hardest math in Engg'g Course is the Electrical Engineering which is totoo)

Well back to math,

Challenge un kasi in depth na ang understanding sa number and coordinate systems

Ang napansin ko lang, the hardest part in mathematics is developing analytical skill in solving numbers. Once you have learnt this skill, everything that needs critical thinking can be easily solved.

Laplace Transform
Ordinary Differential Equations
Gauss Elimination

:cry:

2 + (2^2  - 1) =  5
5 + (3^2 - 1) = 13

Banana(4) + Banana(4) + 15 = 23

hindi ba multiply yung huli paps?

multiple nga paps. check mo yung second to the last.

2(oclock) + Banana(3) + Banana(3) x  (1Pentagon(5) + 1Hexagon(6))

the bold parts will result in an 11 dahil nga pentagon plus hexagon is 11. tapos you multiply by 3 (naka underline) agad dahil as per MDAS rule, una ang multiply before addition. so magiging 33 siya.

that will leave you with:

2(oclock) + Banana(3) + 33 = 38

Sa mga nakakaalam ng misteryong sagot. Smile tayo jan :)

You saw a T-shirt that sells at 97 pesos, you borrowed 50 pesos from your mother and 50 pesos from your father to buy the shirt. You got a change of 3 pesos. You gave 1 peso to your mother and 1 peso to your father, then you keep hold of the remaining 1 peso.

Here’s the problem:
Since you returned 1 peso each to your mother and father, then you just owed them 49 pesos each.

So 49 + 49 = 98.
98 plus the 1 peso that remained in your possession = 99.

It’s supposed to be 100 pesos, where is the missing 1 peso?

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

given:
a = ?
b = ?
c = 12
Isosceles Triangle: b = a

Solution:

(12)^2 = a^2 + b^2

12^2 = a^2  + b^2

144 = a^2 + b^2

*b = a
144 = a^2 + a^2

144 = 2a ^2

sqrt(144 = 2a ^2)

12 = sqrt (2)a

12/ sqrt (2) = a

a = 8.4852813742385702928101323452582

a = b = 8.4852813742385702928101323452582

Check using Pythagorean theorem

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

72 + 72 = 144
sqrt(144) = 12

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

given:
a = ?
b = ?
c = 12
Isosceles Triangle: b = a

Solution:

(12)^2 = a^2 + b^2

12^2 = a^2  + b^2

144 = a^2 + b^2

*b = a
144 = a^2 + a^2

144 = 2a ^2

sqrt(144 = 2a ^2)

12 = sqrt (2)a

12/ sqrt (2) = a

a = 8.4852813742385702928101323452582

a = b = 8.4852813742385702928101323452582

Check using Pythagorean theorem
