New CITES ruling on Rosewood, Bubinga
« on: January 22, 2017, 10:49:07 AM »
I don't know guys if you've already read about this:

https://reverb.com/news/new-cites-regulations-for-all-rosewood-species

Just learned about it while watching Chapman Guitars' NAMM 2017 video. They're shifting to all maple or ebony fretboards. They couldn't afford the cost of acquiring CITES certification for guitars with rosewood as it would make their guitars more expensive.

Took effect Jan 2, 2017. Hmm, makes me wanna retract my Gibson LP.  <_<

so meaning ba nito tataas ang demand sa maple fret guitars like tele, strat and super strats kasi most of the time rosewood sa fret e. however, just don't mind me. I'm not a wood geek. I'm just wandering

never seen a lespaul with maple fret.

Sure he can! I have a couple of roasted maple necks done by his team. Topnotch quality.

You will still see rosewood on midlevel to higher-end guitars but less and less on budget guitars I think, just so manufacturers can avoid the certification costs that would add extra costs to budget guitars. Also if you frequently buy or sell second-hand guitars and ship internationally there will be additional costs since even if your rosewood guitar is pre-convention (CITES convention in Johannesburg SA), you still need the certification before you can ship it internationally.

Ebony is getting scarce too. If I'm not mistaken, nauna pang nalista sa CITES ang Ebony (coming from specific countries) kesa Rosewood.

Okay so the plan of buying an offset guitar at ishibashi will be pending as of the moment. My choice of guitar has rose f*cking wood on fret.

Pwede pa yata if you'll be carrying it home from Japan. Here's a quote from the posted article:

"It does not apply to instruments shipped within the borders of your country or instruments carried for personal use while traveling internationally [unless they contain more than 22 lbs. (10 kg) of the regulated woods]."

If you're carrying it for personal use, the limit is 10kg of rosewood. But if you're shipping the guitar internationally through couriers, the recipient country will look for a CITES certification if the guitar contains rosewood.

Yes, you'll have to pay for it. Question is, which agency of our government will handle this CITES certification? Or baka wala man mag-issue. :-D
Problem is, kung yung recipient country strict sa certification (say US), the guitar that you shipped will be held up in US customs kung walang certification.

Here's a rant:

The new regulation is bad for touring musicians!

Diba? Let's say may tour kayo then all of the instruments you use have rosewoods in it. I-hohold nila lahat.  :|

I understand the part that the people behind the regulation are protecting the nature e.g. cutting down new trees for this kind of business. Pero, bakit too soon? Wala man lang grace period para dun sa mga musikero haha.   <_<

Am wondering why an authentic guitar's serial number is not put to use here. Then maybe for new productions under the new guideline, there should be a special mark or serial number to indicate that it conforms with the guideline. I feel that it should be the manufacturer's burden to prove that their guitars adhere to the rule.

If you checked the link, just on the 2nd paragraph...

It does not apply to instruments shipped within the borders of your country or instruments carried for personal use while traveling internationally [unless they contain more than 22 lbs. (10 kg) of the regulated woods].

An electric guitar usually weighs between 7-11lbs (3.5 - 5k kgs) in total.. The rosewood content there (fingerboard and/or neck, usually) would only be a fraction of the weight.
Now, it should be clarified if the 10kg rosewood content would be "per instrument" or "sum of all rosewood" for all items considered. The latter would be very hard to get an exact weight, though. Haha.

The new CITES ruling pertains to importing of rosewood and bubinga harvested  after December 31, 2016. If guitar makers/manufacturers still have a bulk of the said woods in stock prior to the deadline, they can continue to manufacture until supplies last.
