improper grounding, un-shielded wires are some of the causes of unecessary noice of your guitar

never heared that an over-heated potentiometer can cause one

tama, mas maganda yung tunog nung lumang Bandit. too artificial na yung tunog nung bagong Bandit 112 e. try contacting Audiophile about the footswitch. pero the last time nagtanong ako, wala daw silang stock.

I 've been using a tube amp for a couple of years now, i still don't know what the difference of a class AB from a class A amp. Honestly, di ko talaga alam. So where does my 5150 head fit in?  Thanks.

from a technical standpoint, a class A amplifier processes signals for the whole 360° of the sinusoidal cycle (meaning, the whole positive and negative half-cycles) while a class AB amplifier processes signals for any value above 180° and below 360° of the sinusoidal cycle. kaya may biasing na ginagawa sa ibang amps para ibahin yung cut-off nung amp per cycle.

general characteristics of class A amps: hi-fidelity (because it captures the whole 360° of the signal) but is not efficient in terms of power. usually nasa 50% (or below, i forgot the exact range) power efficiency lang.

general characteristics of class AB amps: mas in-your-face ang tunog because since hindi 360° ang signal processing nya, mas efficient sya sa power, thus mas malakas ang tunog in general.

i'm not sure about the Peavey 5150 though.. pero diba pwede i-bias yan? :)

hmmm, di ko magets sinabi mo pero, my idea of the 5150 is class AB, since malakas siya. A wild guess maybe??? LOL!!!!

About biasing, i have no idea either.

yup, your 5150's class AB.

Ok. Class AB.... Another question, since my amp head is 120watts and it runs 4 speakers in 8 ohms, is it possible just to run a 1x12 with the head? and what kind? I'm thinking practicality eh.

yes, it's possible, as long as:
1.  the impedance matches (e.g. 8 ohm setting on the amp to an 8 ohm speaker, 16 ohm setting on the amp to a 16 ohm speaker.)
2.  the speaker's power rating is 120 watts or higher.

the above is your rule of thumb.  experienced users may mismatch impedances or use a speaker with a lower power rating, but i advise against this to avoid any problems or risks to your speaker/s and/or worse yet, to your amp.

eminence, fane, and jbl are some brands that have high powered speakers that you can try with your amp.  unfortunately, it isn't exactly easy to find speakers that are 120 watts or higher, so your best bet might be to go with a 2x12 or 2x10 configuration with speakers that are at least 60 watts each (e.g. 2 celestion vintage 30's or 2 celestion classic leads).

hope this helps.

cheers.

overheating the pots will likely damage it ( tried it  :-( )... perhaps when the pots are busted, it causes the noise (just not that sure on this one)  :-D

Thank you very much, much appreciated. A 2x10 might be handy, i wonder what i'd do with the 4x12 though. :-D

Another thing, poundcake said something that the 5150 had can be biased? what does that do?

you're welcome, man.

yeah, i'm sure the 5150 can be biased.  i'm just not sure how it is implemented in that amp.  usually, there's a bias knob inside the amp.  otherwise, an amp tech can install one for you.

biasing basically helps ensure that your tubes (i assume they are matched in the first place) operate at their optimum level.  when your amp is biased too hot, it shorten's the tubes's life.  when it is biased to cold, it compromises your tone.  when properly biased, your tubes balance tone and tube life.

it is always a good idea to have your amp biased when you replace your tubes.  there are resources on the net that can teach you how to bias.  a caveat is that you're going to deal with high voltages inside the amp.  it's a risk if one is inexperienced.  my suggestion is to have an amp tech do this for you.  it will cost you but considering a good set of tubes would last you a good while, it should be worth the price.

hope this helps.

cheers.

Anybody knows what effects Ian Thornley used in this song? I think it's a Tremolo, but I'm not sure. This is 1 of my all-time fave songs, lagi ako nae-LSS dito. I reallyx2,000,000 love this song, 1st year college palang ako naririnig ko na 'tong song na 'to! And everytime I hear this song, naaalala ko yung college days ko reviewing for "Strength of Materials", hahaha!!!

Tagal ko ng gusto matugtog 'to, can anybody help? Please

But they sound faacking great!!! Well, at least to me they do, but ya, they wear out sooner. The sound seems livelier and fuller when power tubes are biased hot. I modded my Carvin X100-B head so that I can adjust the bias (among other mods). I set the bias for the E34L tubes @ about 70% of the rated max dissipation. My Mesa Boogie Road King II on the other hand has fixed bias. Mesa goes by tube grades, some tubes will bias cold and some will bias medium, some hot. I just ask for the ones that will bias hot.
