this is why we(PINOYS) have the right to sing the blues!!!
« on: August 15, 2008, 09:29:57 AM »
because we filipinos are the blacks of asia!

filipinos, though we're slowly getting recognition all over the world when it comes to music...

are looked down upon by those who think they're(racially) better than us.

it's true, the first time i went to a sam ash music store(hollywood).. i was looking around the guitar department section, i heard this guy(salesman) looking at me and saying stuff like

you're probably FOB(fresh off the boat) and you don't even understand one word of english...so i'm not gonna bother asking you if you needed anything

i turned around to see if he was talking to someone else, but then i realized ako pala ang pinapatama!

anyway, we filipinos are very talented in music! i learned that first hand that we take to music like a fish takes to water!

i've had students(guitar), all kids...different races.... ang mga pilipino ang pinaka-mabilis ang 'pickup' sa tinuturo ko sa kanila.

medyo OBOB ang mga *****, and it's not about the language barrier either as my filipino students are all born and raised here sa tate. i don't speak tagalog at all when i teach(nasa america ka e).

i won't reveal kung anong race ang pinaka obob sa music...coz that would be misleading and racist. but i feel that we have an edge on music, for some unknown reason.

one more reason, pinoys have the 'blues' birthright? we have very good understanding of suffering..... what with the current state of things going on in the homeland(yes, i do keep up with some of the news) we have been hit by a lot more blows to increase our suffering.

typhoons, naglulubugan na superferries, pagtaas ng presyo ng lahat! pagbaba ng sweldo...kurakot left and right mula sa pinakamababang gov't official to the highest ranking dud.

and through it all.... we still manage to play, sing our worries away!

blues bruddah eb(see GUITAR CENTRAL), i wish i could go

gigs ng mga blues brothers--blue rats, soulbenders, southern grass, bluejean junkies....nakaka-miss at nakaka-inggit kayong lahat!

bakit ako maiinggit? d ba nasa america ako, the land where the blues originated?

i actually went to a local blues jam....and everyone who was there....was white...not that there was anything wrong about that...but there was this dude who was acting really stuffy and aloof, with the impression that he was THE MAN about blues...

hhhhmmm....i managed to make some friends in the bar, some of them pretty cool....and while talking to them i wondered out loud..."this is great, but where are all the black at?"

i haven't been out recently, but i have heard no news about any black blues guitarplayer who has come out with anything....well maybe there are two in every twenty blues guitar players that are black!

this comes to mind...all the black kids are taking the hip hop/gangsta rap route...no budding black blues players anymore...well, not a lot in recent memory.

it's time to rise up, and claim our birthright pinoy blues brothers! arm yourselves with your strats, teles and 335s....equip your ts,zd and dumbol clones!

and post your blues jams on youtube! maybe you'll get somewhere someday!

long live pinoy blues!!!!

May na-meet at naka-jam akong Korean dito na nagmamasters sa jazz, nung nalaman niyang Pilipino ako, sinabi niya kaya pala daw magaling ako kasi pilipino ako(even if it's true or not it made me feel good :-D)marami daw magagaling na Filipino musicians sa korea.

Haha, spillover! :)

Sana we pinoys created a music of our own no? Parang samba and bossa nova, blues, jazz... Hehe :)

Gawa nga tayo ng Pinoy blues. Yung pagnarinig ng 'kano sasabihin niya - "hey man, that guy's playing some Pee-noy blues!"  :-D

Yun ang mga authentic Filipino music and considered as great artforms in the philippines.

My 2c.

All that granted, we Filipinos are just too...I don't know what term to use..inconsolable optimists ?

I mean, see what we've been through even in the last 30 years of our history. It took a lot for us to go up in arms as a people.

When the price of rice increased, we clenched our teeth, smiled, and ate less. When the price of gasoline soared, we grit our teeth, smiled, and learned how to curtail travelling or start using public transportation.

We find humor in the smallest of things. We find silver linings in the darkest of clouds. When Korean and Japanese youths throw themselves off buildings for taking home mediocre grades, we just push on. Or find something else to do if school doesn't work out. When things went wrong with the economy in Indonesia, the streets were filled with rioting people.

Wala. We're an inconsolably happy people and an international study affirms us as the 17th happiest people in the world, despite being the 148th (out of 180) economy in the world. Easy to please, difficult to anger. Eto nga garapalan na naman sila sa senado o, with all the double listing of expenses ni Villar. Wala. It's our strength, and yet it is also our weakness.

Its hard to draw lonely blues from a happy heart. We can play it, maybe we can even feel it, but I don't we as a people will "BE" it.

Me.

blacks are almost the same way. the only difference is that they recognize themselves as a force to be reckoned with----the filipino beast has yet to awaken, and i think there's one way that we can get it.

it's when you get to experience being pinoy in another country. this is just my opinion.

having the blues, or singing about the blues is about

"a good man, feeling bad"

I don't know if this is "swak swak" , but here goes.

When the blacks were worked to death in the cottonfields, they created the blues, which can really tug at your soul and drive you to suicide. When the indentured tenant Filipino was worked to death he sang "magtanim ay di biro, maghapong nakayuko, di man lang nakatayo, di pa rin nakaupo...". In a happy tune ! Hahehehe. Ewan ko ba. But it seems to make sense tho.

i love playing the blues man! piano or guitar! blues for me is a medium to show that im happy or blue. when my father introduced me to hendrix when i was young. una kong napakinggan eh yung red house. and then the obsession began. kahit metal ang tugtugan. sinisingit ko parin yung love kong blues. riff or lick. sir blues2death has a point. we filipinos are being discriminated not only in asia. but in the world. i stand for being a blue baby!  :-D :-D

I agree with Jobet/Bamf on this one. Pinoys are too darned happy almost all of the time. Napaka-dali tuloy nating utuin.

But the Pinoys whose eyes are open sing the blues every day, of that I'm certain.

How can we witness homeless people sleeping on dingy streets while people in high office laugh all the way to the bank and not sing the blues?

Magkaisa!

Share the gift, share the love.
