this one is very informative.

in addition, i just want to add up.
proper hydration before sleep is very important.

If you're not drinking at least 8 cups of water a day, chances are you are creating a water deficit in your body.
Under normal conditions, the body loses approximately 12 cups of water every day!

The main effect of dehydration is seen in your blood,
your blood clumps together and can't carry oxygen to all the parts of your body.
As an effect, you'll feel tired, low on energy, and your immune system will be lowered.

peace.

How to prevent Bangungot:

in a very practical way.
for example.
So considering pagod ka, tapos busog ka. kaya pag natulog, hindi magagawa ng katawan natin ng maayos ang kanyang dapat gawin (to digest the food and at the same time ipahinga ka).

to prevent this.
mag dinner ng maaga.
pwede matulog pag pagod pero pag busog HINDI.
bawal matulog pag busog kahit hindi pagod
pag busog, magantay at magpahina muna ng 2 or more hours bago matulog.

hope this helps.  :-D

naku! ang hilig ko pa naman kumain ng 2 pancit canton na lucky me with nilagang itlog before matulog.. buti nalang hindi pa ako na tsetsempuhan.. hehehe thanks sa info..

More than a decade na akong laging "binabangungot"; not everyday of course pero nasanay na ako. I found out something kaya naiiwasan ko nang bangungutin. Sharing...

1. Bedtime - I'd feel a heavy feeling in my head when I lie down. I would just usually get up and try to breathe in and out (relax) deeply for 10-15 minutes kasi I know babangungutin ako pag tinuloy ko pa din pagtulog (kahit antok I'd get up and rather sleep sitting with my back and head leaning on the wall. Using a soft pillow of course! If nightmare persists I'd do my solution on item 2. :)

2. Before bedtime - When I feel some heaviness, I'd get a clean wet towel and put it on my forehead and leave it there while i'm sleeping. same thing pag maiinit ang feeling ko sa head.

3. Pag puyat - Pag nalipasan ako ng antok (yung antok na antok na pero di pa rin natutulog) I make sure i have a wet towel on my forehead as I sleep.

During the nightmare I'd make sure I am relaxed kahit kung ano na ang nangyayari sa scene -- kahit gaano pa sya ka-nakakatakot. if something is scaring me sa panaginip I don't fear because I know my God is greater than all of them. "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain."

PS.

madami tubig after kumain ng noodles at magbeer... magpatunaw ngkinain..
best na nakatagilid or nakadapa matulog.

like that yung cause ng bangungot.

bakit sya defense mechanism? dahil kung wala ito, kumikilos ka habang nananaginip, which may lead to hitting your arm/head on something hard.

base sa nabasa ko sa wikipedia.hehe sleepwalking is different though, kaya di ko madefend to sa "defense mechanism" na nabangit ko. :-D

Tapos, like there was a malevolent presence inside my room..
then i felt a tingling sensation... from my toes untiunti paakyat sa legs ko then
arms then my head naigalaw ko na... tapos i tried to sit up, then
bigla nag open totally ung diwa ko, as in gising na gising ako. nakaupo sit up

happy reading =)

SILENT KILLER: What u need to know about NIGHTMARE or  BANGUNGOT & some  realities

Got this information from a US-based pharmacist who is a cousin of a colleague.

It seems only MALES are afflicted with this.

We had a co-staff/driver from FAO who died last month from  supposedly BANGUNGOT--
leaving a housewife and 3 very young kids.

IMPORTANT: Never go thirsty when going to bed and be sure you have plenty of water
during your 8-hour rest.

Bangungot has killed a male nurse of UERMMH.
It is sudden death in adults which cause them to die while sleeping.
Many theories have been put forward as its cause. However,
here is an article which sheds some light to the cause of this malady..

Please read on:

Article from THE PHILIPPINE STAR:

The reported cause of actors Rico Yan, Didith Reyes and Marky Cielo's death is nightmare
or bangungot. Medical investigators in China ,Japan and several Asian countries who
performed autopsies on persons who died from 'acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis' found out
that the majority of them had eaten NOODLES as their supper. This was a startling finding.
However, it wasn't the noodles that caused nightmares but DEHYDRATION. Imbibing even
with a few drinks of alcohol or just eating noodles immediately before bedtime compound
this on an empty stomach will trigger an electrolyte imbalance and other factors that
causes a person to dehydrate or lose water.

It is therefore advisable for a person to take several glasses of water before bedtime
if he had a few or several alcoholic drinks.

Avoid eating noodles before bedtime, but if you can not avoid it, allow at least two hours
for the body to digest the noodles before hitting the sack and drink plenty of water.

The most important thing is, never go thirsty when going to bed and be sure you have plenty
of water during your 8-hour rest.

PLEASE PASS TO YOUR FRIENDS!   FOLKLORIC TREATMENTS  AND PREVENTIVE REMEDIES

* Move an extremity, a leg, or wiggling the big toe or thumb will drive the batibat away
or snap him out of the 'paralysis.'
* Drinking several glasses of water before sleeping.
* Lying on the left side.
* Not going to bed too soon after a big meal
(especially one washed down  with lots of alcohol).
* Avoid balut as pulutan when drinking beer.
* Bedtime prayers.

ito yung site na nabaso ko.. :-)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightmare

and this one talks about sa sleep paralysis, the one i talked about in my previous reply. :-)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis
Symptoms and characteristics

Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the body paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully conscious, but unable to move. The paralysis can last from several seconds to several minutes "after which the individual may experience panic symptoms and the realization that the distorted perceptions were false".[5] When there is an absence of narcolepsy, sleep paralysis is referred to as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP).[6] "ISP appears to be far more common and recurrent among African Americans than among White Americans or Nigerian Blacks",[7] and is often referred to within African American communities as "the witch riding your back"[8][9]

In addition, the paralysis state may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger.[10] Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual due to the vividness of such hallucinations.[11] The hallucinatory element to sleep paralysis makes it even more likely that someone will interpret the experience as a dream, since completely fanciful, or dream-like, objects may appear in the room alongside one's normal vision. Some scientists have proposed this condition as an explanation for alien abductions and ghostly encounters.[12] A study by Susan Blackmore and Marcus Cox of the University of the West of England supports the suggestion that alien abductions are related to sleep paralysis rather than to temporal lobe lability.[13]

[edit] Possible causes

Sleep paralysis occurs during REM sleep, thus preventing the body from manifesting movements made in the subject's dreams. Very little is known about the physiology of sleep paralysis.[citation needed] However, some have suggested that it may be linked to post-synaptic inhibition of motor neurons in the pons region of the brain.[citation needed] In particular, low levels of melatonin may stop the depolarization current in the nerves, which prevents the stimulation of the muscles, to prevent the body from enacting the dream activity (e.g. preventing a sleeper from flailing his legs when dreaming about running).[citation needed]

Several studies have concluded that many or most people will experience sleep paralysis at least once or twice in their lives.[citation needed] A study conducted by Sedaghat F. et al. has investigated the prevalence of sleep paralysis among Iranian medical students. 24.1% of students reported experiencing sleep paralsis at least once in their lifetime. The same result was reported among Japanese, Nigerian, Kuwaiti, Sudanese and American students.[14]

Many people who commonly enter sleep paralysis also suffer from narcolepsy. In African Americans, panic disorder occurs with sleep paralysis more frequently than in Caucasians.[15] Some reports read that various factors increase the likelihood of both paralysis and hallucinations. These include:[16]

    * Sleeping in a face upwards or supine position
    * Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
    * Increased stress
    * Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
    * A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode.

lagi ako natutulog ng busog..

never ko pa naranasan yan..

the freaky part is when i looked at the end of my bed parang may taong nakatayo pero hindi ko sya maaninagan kung sino... whay i did is relax my self save my strength and i prayed a lot taz biglang pag dilat ko wala na yung tao at nakakagalaw na ko... grabe....
