Last Sat, may nabili ako na drumset.  Sa ebay ko ito nakita.  A Powerbeat 5 piece drum set, with heavy duty Fernando hat stand and GIBRALTAR boom stand and all REMO heads for 4,500 php lang (swerte ko, mura)

THen naisipan kong i-restore. Pinalitan ko yung drum wrap ng vinyl (c/o ACE Hardware) and yung hoops and lugs di ko na pina-powder coat (mahal at layo e)  spray paint na glossy lang ginamit ko.

Eto sya dati:

Process ng pagkabit at papinta:

Eto na sya ngayon:

Changed the head, yung REMO pinstripe ginawa kong resonant, then bumili ako ng LAZER double ply black heads para sa batter.

Bagay na bagay sa PDP 805 ko hehe.

I'm so proud of this new baby of mine.

Got myself a hi-hat na rin for 4k (Sabian XS20, super bago pa...as in hehe)

@bulog

Thanks

Great work Bulog! I love what you have done to your kit!  :-D

@ bulog...

Lazer heads po, yung mga 2 ply heads na black from 350 to 550 php yung toms and 980 php yung bass drum head.

Then dikit mo yung unang portion (make sure na pantay), saka mo gamitan ng squigee paikot (gulo ba hehe)...sorry hirap explain e.

Pero so far, so good po.

Salamat sa inyo

Hey guys I'm gonna paint my old fernando drums (I was inspired by http://guerrilladrummaking.com/ :-D) so ngayon, I'm gonna go to Ace hardware at titingnan ko kung magkano magagastos ko sa pag bili ng spray paint. Then after ko i paint ung shells, i'm gonna clean the lugs and hoops and other parts using WD40 and steel wool pero kung hindi ko ma sesave ung rusted parts, i'm gonna buy new ones. Tapos mag papagawa ako ng Custom bass reso head and drum badges kay sir rrkkxx  :-D.

This is my drumkit right now. I replaced all the wraps with the Vinyl wraps that i bought from Ace Hardware pero i'm not satisfied with it so i'm gonna resort to spray painting my kit.

I my self did a repainting job on my kit....

the bass on your right used to be blue... and the lugs a oval shaped.. now paired with the Ludwig kit... thats 7 coats of paints (used Primer, Flat white, Gloss white and Clear)

1st coat - Primer Gray
2nd-3rd coat - Flat white-in order na kumapit yung next coat
4th-5th coat - gloss white
6th-7th coat - Clear finish

and viola!!! finished product...

hindi sya madaling mag chip off... since 7 coats sya...... and I forgot to mention that ni-liha ko pa pala muna yung bass before applying the paints, its much better to apply paint that way... even sa lugs, lihain mo muna para yung chrome part gumaspang para kumapit ang primer paint.... sa hoops power coating talaga dapat dyan, because lagi syang tatamaan ng stick, mag chip off ang paint kapag spray paints lang...

gastos effect ng double bass set up ko...

since kung mapapasin nyo walang Straight Stand yung kit...

I traded it to the Bass (LA Drums) so generic lang....

then

bought 1 - Primer Gray, 1 - Gloss White, 1 - Flat White, 1 - Clear that cost P450

bought lugs at Lazer cost me around P1200

since di pa tapos yung bass, as you can see yung spur generic parin, P1100 pair ng spur that will correspond with the Ludwig spur, ala pa pera pambili eh, need to buy:

heavy duty stands
3 more 18" crashes
1 - China cymbal
Tom Rack Stand
16x18 Floor tom
Fernando Single Pedal to finish this project..

magastos maging drummer talaga mga brothers

Thanks. At first, stripping the vinyl cover. Medyo mahirap pero tiyaga lang. Yung vent grommet, sisirain tlaga dahil you can't strip the vinyl cover with the grommet still intact. I used a hair blower para mas madaling maitanggal yun cover. After stripping, needs to sand before applying primer coating.  I did put some wood putty to get rid of some blemishes sa wood. After 1-2 coats of primer, kelangan pa din isand. In between applying coats, it really needs sanding. After primer, applying the paint color you prefer. I used lacquer paint (Pylox spray paint) because I don't have the tools like spray gun and compressor for painting. The fade effect, it needs a skilled hand, and mine is crappy. When your satisfied with the color you want, it's time for the clear coating. In between clear coats, again may sanding process pa din. Applied 2 coats of clear before sanding. Mind you, after applying the clear coats, I have to dry the paint for at least 1-2 days before sanding.  Sanding it, starts from a coarser grit sandpaper down to a finer grit (600 - 2000 grit). And when I sand the coats, I also used water para mas madali at madulas ang pagsasand.  Ang iba, gumagamit pa ng soap. Di pa pwedeng ilagay ang mga lugs and hardwares after sanding. After 1 month pa bago ilagay mga parts, they call it curing stage.  The inner ply of the shell, I applied wood stain, dahil di din ganun kaganda yun shell. Did all of these processes sa 3 shells I have.

Pagnagkamali, have to sand it down sa umpisa. Naalala ko, nun nagkamali ako sa pagpintura ng fade effect, nun hindi ko nagustuhan, sinand ko agad after painting without waiting it to dry. Kaya, lesson learned, wait till the paint dries before sanding. :-)  I chose a dark color for fade effect close to to the primary color. Crappy talaga ang itsura but thats the closest thing I can do.
The shells are an old Yupangco MusicMate 90's circa.

I used a hair blower para lang lumambot yun glue that's sticking the vinyl wrap sa wood. After stripping, sand the wood in preparation for applying the primer coat. It's your desire to choose from lacquer or polyurethane, and never apply lacquer to polyurethane or vice versa because there will be a reaction. I chose lacquer as primer, the color finish down to the clear coat.

Materials used: wood putty, different grits of sand paper, sand block, masking tape, lacquer spray paint (Pylox spray cans) - primer, chosen color and clear coat, Zar wood stain for the inner ply.  You can buy these on different DIY shops (ACE hardwares, True Value, Wilcon, etc..)

Well paint will easily chip off from hardware especialy in the hoops because you sometimes hit them with the sticks. I suggest that you have them powder coated.

mura lang around 30php sa hoops and lugs, sa shells di ko matandaan.. prices might have significantly increased ever since then siguro pero hindi naman lalagpas un ng 100php.. paint MIGHT chip, due to significant wear and tear and time itself, these are great factors to consider din..

Post by: iFah on June 07, 2012, 11:49:03 AM
IDEA: Custom Bass Drum Reso head
simple project to custom your drums

MATERIAL NEEDED: Personalized tarp

HOW: simply unscrew and place the tarp over your bass reso and tighten it. cut excess tarp around the rim.
tune it to your desired, manageable sound you may desire.

CONS: your sound will become boxy. many may not like the sound

USE: for those performances with mike-ins cut a port hole then mic it. just mix the bass sound using mixer to compensate for the boxy sound.

Title: PROJECT: Super Bass 22 X 36 inch long bass drums
Post by: iFah on June 07, 2012, 01:30:30 PM
PROJECT: Super Bass
22 X 36 inch long bass drums

NEED: 2 bass drums

How i did it:

-removed all shell hardware and suka cleaned it to shiny new

-removed vinyl cover of both drum bass shells

-Took it to a wood shop

They connected both shells using small strips of woods glued and nailed. the edge of each shell was cut off before being connected to have a space-less connecting fit.

they charged Php 300

PROBLEM:
tho both are both 22" bass drums shells, they are still not identical because they are 2 different brands.

one shell is slightly protruding out on some area. Stripping off the covering reveals how lousy a generic shell's workmanship has. the bass is not perfectly circular at it seems.

SOLUTION:

bought this wood repair pudding and sand paper (yung magaspang) from a hardware
Sand paper - Php 60 (3pcs sand papers)
Pudding - Php 160 (1  can)

DIY shell repair
pudding for the wood. apply generously
(https://fbcdn_sphotos_a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/282819_10150891726374398_398908997_n.jpg)

let the pudding sip through spaces
(https://fbcdn_sphotos_a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/599938_10150891726629398_920235504_n.jpg)

use a hard straight material like a credit card to flatten the pudding and to push it well into spaces. this allows it to hold on firmly on the wood and to help you not to accumulate ore debt :)

what it will normally look like

-Let the pudding dry for 1 hour

after an hour of drying, sand paper it using the rough grade to make faster result.
sand it down until you get a straight plane. apply more pudding on uneven areas and sand paper it until its uniformed.

patching unneeded holes. i put a tape underneath the holes and applied pudding to hold the material temporarily and letting the pudding dry before sanding it down to

after sanding. no more holes!

sir how did you deal with the tension rods? Mahirap maglinis ng tension lugs na may kalawang. snare and tom tension rods to be specific. Kaya bumili nlng ako ng bago..... :P
