Cymbal Cleaning
« on: April 29, 2015, 04:30:25 PM »
hello everyone! i've always been curious sa mga nakikita ko na different methods when it comes to cleaning our cymbals. gusto ko lang malaman kung ano ba ginagamit niyo mostly na DIY/Homemade products? i'd like to learn more on this. ang mga nakita ko na so far(but haven't tried) is using ketchup or vinegar, meron din yung paste consisting flour, salt, and vinegar. care to share your thoughts? thanks!

nikko, drummer of pitik? Hello brother!

anyways, IMHO, iwasan natin yung mga acidic methods like ketchup and vinegar dahil may mga acids ito na baka magreact with the metal of the cymbals. most probably, baka mapadali ang tarnishing ng cymbal dahil dito. best to get a meinl cymbal cleaner as tested na siya by some of our fellow forumers na effective without removing the logos.

for DIY stuff, i heard that joy dishwashing soap also works as good.

Hope this helps!

I just use dishwashing liquid and warm but not hot water. tapos kung may sponge ka yung pang automotive, ayos din yun. At tama si ralph, try not to use the acidic methods, especially kung worn out na yung protective coating or if you purposely stripped that coating.

and don't ever use metal cleaner. polish baka makalusot ka (don't use it often if you choose to. once in a blue moon lang). burado yung lathing mo nyan! stay away from GLO.

try mo minsan oatmeal scrub, gumana sya para sakin

Yes sir ako nga! Hehe anyway, buti na lang i haven't tried doing the ketchup/vinegar method. I've seen something about baking soda and warm water. Haha but thanks for sharing! Baka subukan ko din Meinl cymbal cleaner. :)

Buti na lang never ko pa sinubukan mag metal polish or any abrasive stuff. Like i said, nalilito lang talaga ako ngayon kasi ang daming options na lumalabas eh. I even saw something about Barkeeper's Friend which is very effective daw.

Oatmeal scrub? Sosyal yan ah. Haha :)

Hello paps! ralph here, midnight meetings hahahaha

anyway, yung groove juice paps, may mga nagreview niyan dito sa ibang thread, ang alam ko mejo hindi maganda, nakakacause ata ng tarnishing or patina. yung meinl lang talaga yung mejo nakita kong mild enough not to damage the cymbal, but strong enough to clean.

baking soda, nakakalinis daw pero hindi nakakabalik ng shine. so kung tanggal grime lang paps, it just might work.

I tried the Pledge metal polish. Hindi sya cleaner, polish lang talaga. Still abrasive, but gently so. Di naman kinain yung grooves ko, so ok naman sya, but do be wary of other brands kasi polish + cleaner sila, so kakain ng metal yan. I think barkeeper's friend is a metal cleaner, so stay away from that. Not too sure with foreign brands kasi pero may nakita ako na barkeeper's friend sa Handyman, parang Zim yung powder na cleaner, tapos may oxalic aid pa. I don't think you'd really wanna put your cymbal through that.

I tried kalamansi before. Medyo naiba yung kulay ng cymbal ko. Hehe. Parang 450php lang ata each.  :-D

paps,

i tried the Zildjian cleaner, ok naman pero nakakapagod mag linis ng cymbal dahil ibubuff mo pa, and logos get removed. I heard the groove juice you dont need to buff the cymbal to make it shine.

Well, nag-experimento  ako nung weekend. popular method kasi yung lemon plus salt scrub (obviously acidic to ah).  gagawin  mo may 1/2 lemon ka tapos dip the cut side in salt, sabay shot ng tequila, tapos ikaskas mo sa cymbal mo "going with the grain." ang mangyayari yung acid taga-tunaw ng stains/dirt tapos pang-alalay yung salt as an abrasive.

NAGING KULAY PINK YUNG UNLATHED PORTION!!  :-o

bwiset photobucket eh, ayaw mag upload! but sound wise and quick analysis lang, mas naging bright sya  konti lang, it's still a dry-ish, earthy ride, pero may sparkle na

pano kaya kung bumili ako nung Turk series o kaya yung Big and Ugly tapos linisin ko ng lemon and salt lahat kulay pink

Eto na! Pics!
So I guess this is a fair warning to all who aren't sure of what can happen when a certain method is used on your cymbals.
And also take note that I did this fully aware that anything can happen with my own cymbals.
And this is to declare that I was amazed and I'm doing this to my hihats as well

To the left, my Istanbul Sultan crash, cleaned with soap and water. To the right is my Istanbul Sultan Ride, cleaned with half a lemon dipped in salt.

I should note that even after cleaning the crash (and the rest of the set) with soap and warm water, they're still actually pretty dirty. The cloth I used to dry the cymbals still picked up dirt. I don't like the idea of scrubbing cymbals with a scouring pad coz that will introduce really ugly scratch marks. Surprisingly, the salt did not scratch my cymbals (even my nice stagg splash). Probably coz the salt is accompanied with lemon juice and it does melt to some degree.

So there, that earthy look, libag lang yan! unlathed cast cymbal bronze is probably any color from brassy yellow to raw pork pink and maybe even psychedelic green.

grabe yan bro ah! i assume same mangyayari sa Stagg DH crash ko kung gawin ko yan. anyway i decided not to try anything na muna. haha tsaka nag dispose ako ng cymbals recently and scored a 2nd hand ride and hats(thankfully malinis sila) AAX Stage ride & AAX Fusion Hats. speaking of which, thoughts on these models? :)

Yung bow yung mostly pink with a tinge of brown.

ayus yan ha,sound wise may difference ba

ayos talaga! siguro sa iba pangit, pero sakin mas maganda sya, mas natural, mas bare pa sa bare metal. sound wise di ko alam kung psychological lang, pero super slightly less dry sya ngayon, mas nag-open up, mas wet, siguro dahil dun sa kapal ng libag na natanggal. just think, a big surface area tapos yung lemon juice sobrang black-green ang kulay at medyo malapot pa. kumbaga kung Sabian yan, from HH naging HHX

stage ride is nice. somewhat crashable, pero not like the A Sweet Ride. the bell on the stage ride is... well... lacks ping.

the fusion hats, im assuming thats a 13 model, they sound nice especially when open. im not a fan of its closed sound because of the air holes sa ilalim, parang kulang sa high end. nawawala yung crisp sound nung hat. IMHO lang naman :D

I see. Nagustuhan ko kasi siya years back nung nasubukan ko sa isang gig. And yes, it's a 13. I get what you're saying about sa closed sound niya. Eto ba counterpart ng k/z?

Sa stage ride naman, if it weren't for the price baka di ko siya kinuha. I was deciding this or hh raw bell dry ride eh. I settled on the stage kasi kahit kulang sa ping yung bell, at least crashable and may cut pa rin yung sound ng bow. Hehe

Yung stage ride, yes, the crash of that ride is pretty good, as well as the bow. rinig talaga. yung bell lang talga, its more of a pang instead of a ping. pero its a good workhorse hahaha

at 12500, i'd say its somewhat a fair price. kasi 7k ang bentahan ng stage ride na with logos na used, and then 8-9k ang fusion hats with logos. so, pwede na paps!
