McCartney sings 'Michelle' — to a famous Michelle

WASHINGTON – If the first British invasion of the White House ended with the house afire, the latest had Barack and Michelle Obama and their kids rocking out in their seats Wednesday night at a tribute concert for former Beatle Paul McCartney.

The setting was the ornate East Room, chandeliers overhead, Georgeand Martha Washington portraits on the walls and an all-star lineup of performers cranking out some of McCartney's greatest hits.

Stevie Wonder had the Obamas clapping to "We Can Work It Out." The Jonas Brothers did "Baby You Can Drive My Car." Corinne Bailey Rae slowed things down with "Blackbird." And Faith Hill stroked "Long and Winding Road."

It was McCartney himself who brought down the house by belting out "Michelle," aiming his words straight at a first lady named Michelle.

He said he'd been "itching" to perform it at the White House, and asked the president's forgiveness in advance. The first lady was soon mouthing the words along with McCartney and the president was swaying in his seat.

After serenading the first lady with the lyrics "I love you, I love you, I love you," McCartney joked that he just might be the "first guy ever to be punched out by a president."

The whole night was built around Obama's presentation to McCartney of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, awarded by the Library of Congress.

McCartney said it was a moment like no other.
"I don't think there could be anything more special than to play here," the Englishman said.
And then he volunteered to make it a regular gig.
"Lunchtimes, we could come around," he offered. "We're cheap."

McCartney, 67, left no question about how he felt about Obama, telling the president that in tough times, "You have billions of us who are rooting for you and we know you are going to come through."

Later, after the TV cameras had left, he expressed appreciation for the Library of Congress and added a zinger: "After the last eight years, it's great to have a president who knows what a library is."

Obama hailed McCartney's songs as a huge part of American culture, telling the singer-songwriter, "That's right, we stole you, Sir Paul."

The Beatles might not have been the first rock group, Obama said, but "they blew the walls down for everyone else."
"They helped to lay the soundtrack for an entire generation," the president said.
McCartney closed out the concert with a string of hits that had the whole audience singing along to "Hey Jude."

By the end, Obama and his family were on stage singing along with the "nah, nah, hey Jude."
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld supplied the concert with its comic relief. He had lots of compliments for McCartney and one complaint — he couldn't quite figure some of McCartney's lyrics.
Such as: "She was just 17. You know what I mean."

Seinfeld: "I'm not sure I do know what you mean, Sir Paul. I think I know what you mean. And I think there's a law enforcement agency in a couple of states that might want to ask you a few questions."

Among others performing were Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, White Stripes singer andguitarist Jack White, Lang Lang and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

The Gershwin prize is named for the songwriting brothers George and Ira Gershwin, whose collections are housed at the library. Previous recipients of the Gershwin award are Wonder and Paul Simon.

Those not lucky enough to snag tickets to the East Room gig can catch the concert July 28, when it's televised on PBS' "In Performance at the White House."

Ok, I'll use the real Quarrymen photo as reference from left to right
1. Eric Griffiths - Guitar
2. Colin Hanton - Drums
3. Rod Davis - Banjo
4. John Lennon - Guitar
5. Pete Shotton - Washboard (what you thought was the lyre is actually a washboard - literally a devise use to wash clothes - pangkusot ng damit)
6. Len Garry - One String tea chest bass - similar to the one on the cover of CCR's album Willie And The Poor Boys. Again, this device is made by putting a hole in the middle of a tea chest, installing a broom handle on a side of the box, and inserting a string in the hole and attaching that to the upper end of the broom handle.

A tea chest is a large wooden box to store tea leaves while being shipped to packaging plants.

It is also worth mentioning that the Quarrymen have a keyboardist named John Duff Lowe. Lowe can be heard on the very very first recording of the Quarrymen/Johnny And The Moondogs/The Beatles - "That'll Be The Day" and "In Spite Of All The Danger" - the only Lennon-Harrison collaboration.

Most welcome Slowhandpal. It has to be said that the remaining members of the Quarrymen are alive and well and STILL MAKING MUSIC! They recently released a cd made of covers of 50s rock standards. All of them repertoire of the band back in the day.

They have an official website. You can easily google it.

Also, they have lots of youtube videos. Check them out!

Thanks a lot bro. You've been digging gold lately

The tape also reveals John Lennon and Paul McCartney hinting at the band’s break up.

John Lennon is heard to say: “We’re obviously not going to go around holding hands forever.”
While Paul McCartney adds: “It would be a bit, you know, embarrassing at 35.”

I must complete the reasons what I like with individual Beatles before I go.

Ringo!

Just like George Harrison, he only has one way of singing unlike the more talented John & Paul but he also did sing songs only fitted for him. George even attempted to sing the hit " It don't come easy " but Ringo does it better. IMHO nobody does it better than him.

I Drumming skills are best displayed on these songs.

a. A Day In a Life
b. Rain
c. Golden Slumbers/ Carry That Weight/ The End
d. Sun King/ Mean Mr. Mustard
e. Octopus's Garden
f. Come Together
g. Please Please Me
h. Strawberry Fields Forever
i. Everybody's Got something To Hide
j. Drumming My Madness
k. In A Heartbeat
l. Weight Of The World
m. It Don't Come Easy
n. I saw Her standing There
o. Wanderlust
p. Not Such A Bad Boy
q. So Bad.
r. Twist And Shout
s. You've Got The Nice Way

II Character/ Attitude

a. I guess he's the most friendly among the four.
b. After the break up, he's the only one who played for the other Beatles.
c. Just Like George he struggled to write songs too inspite of the fact that John & Paul are like giants in their midst
d. Perhaps because of his friendly attitude, he appeared in many performances of other bands and solo performers like Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, The Band, The Who, Gary Moore, Carl Perkins..

III For his concept of touring with his All Starr Band featuring big names in the Music Industry like:

1. Jack Bruce (Cream)
2. Peter Frampton (Humble Pie)
3. Joe Walsh (Eagles)
4. Roger Hudgson (Supretrammp)
5. John Entwishle (The Who)
6. Shella E
7. John Waite (Bad English)
8. Billy Squire
9. Levon Helm (The Band)
10. Zakk Starkey (The Who)
11. Eric Carmen (Euclid Beach Band)
12. Randy Bachmann (The Guess Who)
13. Mark Rivera
14.  Mark Farner (Grand Funk Rail Road)
15. Ian Hunter
16. Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
17. Dave Edmunds
18. Timothy B. Schmit (Eagles)
19. Burton Cummings ( The Guess Who)
20. Nils Lofgren
21. Todd Rundgren
22.Billy Preston
23. Felix Cavallier(?)
24. Paul Carrack (?)
25. Gary Broker (Procol Harum)
26. Colin Hay (Men at Work)
27. Edgar Winter
28. Hamish Stuart
29. Richard Marx
30. Rod Ardent (Zombies)
31. Howard Jones
32. Rick Danko (The Band)

IV Song Writing/ Talent

1. Octopus's Garden
2. Don't Pass Me By
3. It Don't Come Easy( With George)
4. Never without You
5. English Garden (He played all the instruments for this song)
6. What Goes On (With John & Paul as co writers, He played Hammond Organ?)
7. Photographs (with George)
8. Mr. Moonlight (Played guitar)

My Favorite Ringo Albums are:
1. Ringo (Self Titled)
2. Time Takes Time
3. VH1 Story Tellers
4. All Starr Band Albums
5. Liverpool 8

The Nurk Twins were simply John and Paul performing as a folk duo in 1960 during the Quarrymen/Silver Beatles downtime. Nothing much to investigate further but it only strengthened the bond between the two. It was during this period that they began seriously writing their own material.

Actually Nurk Twins is still used as an insider code to mean John and Paul especially as songwriters even when they were already superstars.

There were a lot of reasons Pete Best was fired from the Beatles. And the one you mentioned was one of them. He clearly was the ladies' man at that time - which definitely annoyed the other three. In fact after a while that Pete Best was their drummer, it was GEORGE who talked to Paul and John to fire Pete.

If you analyze the recordings of The Beatles with Pete Best on Anthology 1 and the Decca audition, Ringo is way way better than Pete. Their three recorded versions of "Love Me Do" with THREE DIFFERENT DRUMMERS is another interesting thing to analyze the ability of Pete. That is not to discredit anything from Pete, he is not a bad drummer, it's just that Ringo is a better drummer.

Also, Ringo bonded with the other three better than Pete. Somewhere around 1962, Pete started to miss Beatles gigs and Ringo was always the first call reliever. Even in Hamburg they used to hang around.

The three always say that Ringo was meant to be THE BEATLES drummer, and Pete is just a transition.

Was it George Harrison bro or George Martin?

I guess George Martin preferred Andy White to Ringo because Andy was a seasoned session drummer that time then.

Was it George Harrison bro or George Martin?

I guess George Martin preferred Andy White to Ringo because Andy was a seasoned session drummer that time then.

It was George Harrison who talked to John and Paul to fire Pete. This was even before they secured their contract with Parlophone/EMI. Their last tour in Hamburg even before their EMI audition, this was already in the works.

George Martin's suggestion to replace Pete was only a nail in the coffin. On the band's EMI audition, they were about to fire Pete one way or the other.

Rock bands at that time were considered Rank Amateurs by the recording industry and taunted as incompetent musicians. It has to be said that majority of rock recordings at that time were still played by session musicians and rock bands have to play only on their live performances. A lot of major labels were even reluctant to sign rock bands. The last major company to sign a rock band was CBS (Columbia, Epic) -now known as Sony Music Entertainment since 1991 and merged with BMG in 2005- their first rock band signed to CBS was Paul Revere and the Raiders (a few months before the Byrds). Mitch Miller was the major force for CBS's refusal to sign a rock band. Mitch Miller was then an enemy of rock and roll.

Back to the Beatles. There are two very different versions why Andy White sat in with the Beatles for the recording of Love Me Do. One was that George Martin was not satisfied with Ringo's drumming and so he called Andy White to re-record Love Me Do. The other one (and this was the version most used by the Beatles) is that George Martin was not aware that they had replaced Pete Best and when it was Ringo's time to visit EMI Studios, Andy White was waiting for them precisely because George Martin was not pleased with Pete's drumming.

Now analyzing all the facts presented we now refer to another point of reference - the recording dates! Pete Best version was recorded June 6, 1962 (Steve Vai's second birthday!), Ringo's version was on September 4th and Andy White's version was on September 11th. These facts can be consulted on Mark Lewisohn's book The Beatles Recording Sessions.

The Question here is : who IS telling the truth? If facts that are documented are to be consulted (the recording sheets of EMI don't lie), we can then say that George Martin has the more credible explanation. Now I would not leave anything to suspicion here that the rest of the Beatles are trying to put up a false bravado on Ringo but the best possible reconciliatory action here is that Ringo and Andy's version were both given official EMI releases.

The Andy White version is the most common version we hear today. You can find that in the Please Please Me album and the red 1962-1966 compilation. In this September 11 version (39 years before the World Trade Center tragedy) Ringo was playing tambourine, George Martin felt sorry for Ringo (probably he felt it when Ringo projected his famous sullen frown).

The Ringo version is apparently the more popular version in UK. This was the version heard on the single release although later reissues of the single in UK was replaced by the Andy White version during the 70s. This Ringo version appeared in US for the first time on the US version of the album "Rarities" (also known for having the Butcher photo on the inside of the gatefold sleeve) and 8 years later on the Past Masters version - which by that time the whole world was able to hear the Ringo version for the first time especially people born in the 70s (like me).

If you guys want to hear the 3 Love Me Do versions with Pete Best, Andy White and Ringo, I suggest you buy the Anthology 1 and Past Masters volume 1 cds. To those who have the equipment and more spendable income, find the vinyl version of both titles (I am still looking for the vinyl version of Past Masters though I have the complete Anthology on vinyl).

The following Beatles recordings have NO true stereo versions:
1. Love Me Do (both the Andy White and Ringo Starr versions were recorded direct to 2-track tape)
2. P.S. I Love You
3. She Loves You
4. I'll Get You

up until these 4 songs, once they are released on records, the master tape was either reused or discarded. If one looks at the Please Please me album, the first two songs above were in their fake stereo mix. The master tape for them while the album is being prepared were already discarded. So since then the only master tape remaining in the EMI vaults where the fake stereo Andy White version. Subsequent reissues were prepared using pristine mint condition vinyl from private record collectors.

To date, there is an argument as to whether Sie Liebt Dich used the same backing track as the original She Loves You. The obvious argument and documentation is that the Beatles re-recorded the entire backing track in France for the German version. To a casual listener, this argument is very very believable. But there are some dedicated Beatles fans who dare to question the authenticity of this argument as someone was able to find the original backing track of the original recording of She Loves You on that very same French studio in which Sie Liebt Dich was recorded.

I cannot give any credence to the latter argument because I myself has not seen any apparent evidence proving it. If anyone can show the public the backing track or the two track master tape of She Loves You, they should have presented that to EMI as they were preparing for the 2009 remastered box set. Until now, the abovementioned 4 songs will forever remain in mono and fake stereo.
